Holy Shroud Corpus Christi July 23 thru July 29 For Thanksgiving Requested by: Evelyn Manzano

Pastor’s Corner

Desde el Escritorio del Párroco

In these past weeks we have begun our Masses with the little service reminding us of our four churches. In it’s own simple way, I have found the lighting of the candles and the naming of the churches to be moving. Each church holds so many blessings and so many memories for each one of us! All the good that has come to so many through these churches! So many lives have been impacted and touched by these churches! Truly, each of them has been a tremendous source of light and warmth to the lives of so many! We are grateful for our churches! Next week, at the end of each Mass we will put out the candles one by one and light our Pascal Candleour churches have given life to a new parish which will begin on August 1, 2017! It is beautiful to see how life gives birth to new life! In these month Jaime Versace, one of our parishioners, has been working to put together a small journal that relates a little of the history of our four churches. Jamie, wrote a beautiful introduction for the journal, and, I thought this Sunday it would be appropriate to share a little paragraph from that introduction. It is well known that many pilgrims came to America in pursuit of religious liberty; the freedom to practice their faith, as they believed. But what is less well known is that the history of Catholicism in America is not a smooth journey. In fact, prior to the development of any official Catholic parish in Port Chester, the practice of Catholicism is relatively undocumented. Any gathering of Catholics in our area was dependent on missionary priests willing to journey out of their way to minister. Overburden and overworked these brave clergymen unlikely possessed the luxury of time for documenting their ministry activity. In addition, a hostile prejudice towards the Catholic Church during that period is also thought to account for the lack of historical records on the activity of Catholics. In light of these realities, we may never know what happened amongst our ancestors of faith during those early years, but one record is clear: The Catholic Church did not come to Port Chester looking for a place to build. The Catholic peoples of Port Chester came together with the help of a few courageous religious and, as a community of faith, built their church. As we begin our new parish, I have a deep sense of joy and hope as our “Churches” now come together to build a new united, stronger “Community of Faith”! A community of faith rooted not in a building, but in the very Person of Jesus Christ—The only true light of the World! God bless you!

Pragnę przytoczyć fragmenty pięknego wprowadzenia jej autorstwa: Wielu pielgrzymów przybyło do Ameryki w poszukiwaniu wolności i swobód religijnych. Dodatkowa przeszkoda to prześladowanie katolików . W świetle tych faktow nie pozostała żadna wzmianka i nie mamy wiele informacji. Oczywiste jest jedno: to katolicy rozpoczęli budowy swych świątyń .Nie było im łatwo, ale ogromna wiara ,zapał ,gorące ,kochające Boga serca pozwoliły im osiągnąć uświęcający cel.

Just a reminder until the parish offices are relocated, they remain at Corpus Christi, 136 S. Regent St. Office hours are from 9:00AM to 4:00PM and from 9:00AM to 12:00PM on Saturdays. The new church bathroom is complete. Please let’s keep it clean. The bathroom in the sacristy should no longer be used. Thank you! Classes for new lectors and Eucharistic Ministers are in session. However, if there is anyone who still wishes to serve in either of those roles, please contact Deacon Mike Gizzo (Eucharistic Ministers) or Deacon Ivan Gemio (Lectors). I am grateful to those who volunteer and, especially, those who are organizing the scheduling of people. Please be patient as we try to work our kinks in the schedule. You will notice that our beautiful Cross has been polished and is back in its place on the main altar. As soon as the work to the Tabernacle door is complete, we will have it back in its proper place. As the new parish begins, we will need new Trustees and will put into place a functioning Finance Committee. In these next two weeks I will be approaching some of you to fill some of these very important roles of service in our parish. As usual with extensive renovation work, we are behind schedule; however, things are moving forward and I ask all of us to be patient. There is no doubt, when all is done,, we will feel both very good and very proud of how our church and facilities look. Some time within the next six weeks the Salesian Community should be able to move into the residence and the new offices should be up and running. Many have the custom of having a “Memorial” remembering a loved one. It may the Eucharist and Wine used at Mass, the Sanctuary Candle or candles lit on various altars. We certainly encourage and continue that practice. Let the office know at which Church and/or at which altar you want the memorial.
