From the Desk of Fr. Pat This Thursday we, as a nation, will celebrate the beautiful feast of “Thanksgiving”. Certainly, we all have so much to thank God for and I hope to see all of you as our parish celebrates the greatest act of Thanksgiving– The Eucharist– the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Our Masses, that day will be at 9AM in English and 11AM in Spanish. This national holiday, which was celebrated from the beginning of our nation’s history and is rooted in the first national proclamation made by President Abraham Lincoln, reminds us ever so clearly that we are a nation steeped in Judea-Christian values and that, in the United States, God has a place in the public square. In recent years there are constant and many attempts to push God out and marginalize Him more and more from our national story. Yet, however much some try, it can’t be done. This weekend I thought I would share with you some places where God is engraved in our national history. Many of us may not know the Declaration of Independence by heart, but all of us know those words which pops out at us from the first day of our country’s history: all are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights— and it is this truth that has brought so many people to our country in search of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our first president, George Washington, in his Farewell Address, reminds us that for the United States, “religion and morality are indispensable” and without them our democracy cannot stand. As we look around our country, this Thanksgiving Day, Washington’s words have to give us pause for serious reflection! Our Bill of Rights was written to protect freedom of religion not freedom from religion. Religion, belief in God, is in our national DNA! As the sun rises each day on the Washington Monument, the tallest building in our Capitol, it shines on the words written in Latin on the very top of the monument: Laus Deo (Praise God!). It is as if the first thing our nation does every morning, is to call its citizens to praise God in thanksgiving for all we receive as a country. In the Jefferson Memorial, we read his famous words that “the God who gave us life, gave us liberty.” When we recall Abraham Lincoln, whose speeches as president exude the roots of our nation’s faith, it is good for us, today, to remember his words to a clergy man who said to him that God was on the side of the Union during the Civil War, to which President Lincoln responded: “I am not all concerned about that…… But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord’s side.” This list can go on and on. We know that our money reads: In God we trust and every time we raise our hands over our hearts and say our pledge to the flag, we proclaim, very clearly, that we are one nation under God! This Thanksgiving, we thank God for all the gifts He has given to each of us and to our nation as a people. We affirm our desire in word and in action to share these blessings with our sisters and brothers, especially those many in our own country who are lacking the very necessities of food, clothing and even housing. And, we take up the challenge thrown to us by an ever growing secularized society: we will couragely fight to keep God in the public square and we will not be silent. The United States is a country that believes in God and Thanksgiving is a day that proclaims that belief to all the world as we come together as families to enjoy a good thanksgiving meal— but, first and foremost to thank God for His many gifts and blessings throughout this past year! In the name of each of us in the Salesian Community that has the privilege of serving this parish community, from our family to yours: Happy Thanksgiving! God bless you!
Feliz Thanksgiving!

How do you get more out of the Mass? During Communion, as the priest and ministers prepare, take this time to open your hearts to Jesus whom you are about to receive. Be sure to join in the song as you come forward and sing in line! Bow with reverence and let your “Amen” acknowledge that you are saying “Yes” to Jesus. As you go back to your seat, kneel and continue singing as you give praise to Jesus with the entire community. After the song and while the Eucharist is placed in the tabernacle and the vessels are purified and put away, take this time to let Jesus know how grateful you are for receiving him in the Eucharist and give him thanks. Pray for the strength to follow Jesus’ ways and discipleship in school and with your families. God Bless You! NO CLASS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 23RD AND SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25TH– HAPPRY TAHNKSGIVING!
_________________________________________________
