Our Parish Mission Statement The Parish of St. John Bosco is a multi-cultural, multi-lingual Catholic Faith community that proclaims Jesus Christ. In the spirit of St. John Bosco, we do this by being a Home that welcomes all especially the young and the poor; a School that prepares for life through religious, educational and social services; a Parish that evangelizes through Word & Sacrament, Worship and Faith Formation; a Playground where lasting friendship and relationships are formed and developed through recreational and social opportunities.

From the Desk of Fr. Pat

Desde el Escritorio de P. Pat

Today is red-letter day for our parish as Father Eduardo Chincha, SDB, one of our own boys comes “home” to celebrate his First Mass as a newly ordained Salesian priest! We congratulate his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Alberto Chincha, and all of his family on this beautiful occasion. Father Eddie originally hails from Peru, where he went to a Salesian school with his brother, Ricardo. Coming to Port Chester, his parents brought the family to Holy Rosary Church, where Eddie discerned his Salesian vocation and grew in love with Don Bosco’s mission on behalf of young people. After his practical training in Salesian High School in New Rochelle, he then was sent to Jerusalem for his first year of theological studies, returning after that year to complete his studies at Seton Hall University. Yesterday, June 8th, the Vigil of Pentecost Father Eddie’s dream came to fulfillment and he was ordained a Salesian priest at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Orange, NJ with two other young Salesians: Father Juan Pablo Rubio, SDB, who is here today con-celebrating Mass with Father Eddie, and Father Sean Hogan, SDB. Father Juan Pablo comes from Michigan, but is no stranger to Port Chester; he made his novitiate here at Holy Rosary. Also ordained was Father Sean Hogan. SDB, a graduate of Notre Dame University. After his university studies, Father Sean committed a year as a Salesian Lay Missionary. Falling in love with Don Bosco and his mission for poor kids, Father Sean joined the Salesians, made his novitiate in Port Chester at Holy Rosary, and after his First Profession, generously made himself available to the Rector Major to serve in the missions. He is also celebrating his First Mass today with his family in Montclair, NJ. The ordination of these three young Salesians is a gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church, to Don Bosco and the young and to our parish. Every Sunday we pray to the Holy Spirit for an increase in vocations, especially from within our parish family. The Church needs young men and women generous enough to say “yes” to that call— Jesus is calling, these young people need our support encouragement and witness! Thank you, Fr. Eddie, Fr. Juan Pablo, Fr. Sean for the testimony of you lives and for generous response! We are grateful! Thank you! As we celebrate this beautiful day in the life of our parish family, I ask all of us to pray much and sincerely for vocations especially to the priesthood and religious life. As we work for vocations from our parish, together, we recall Don Bosco’s words to his Salesians:

“Remember that we are presenting a great gift to the Church when we find a good vocation. That this vocation goes to the diocese, to the missions, or to a religious house it does not matter. It is always a great treasure that you are offering to the Church of Jesus Christ.”

God Bless you!

Ukończył salezjańska szkołę średnią w New Rochelle. Potem studiował w Jerozolimie. Po powrocie do Ameryki studiował w Seton Hall University. Wczoraj , 8 czerwca został wyświęcony na księdza . Zacznie swoją pracę w parafii Our Lady of the Valley w Orange NJ, wraz z dwoma innymi Salezjanami, księdzem Juan Pablo Rubio i Sean Hogan pochodzący z Michigan. Ksiądz Hogan ukończył Uniwersytet Notre Dame. Zawsze interesował się pracą na misjach. Dzisiaj również odprawi on swoją pierwszą mszę św. w Montclair NJ. Jesteśmy z Was dumni, wdzięczni i serdecznie dziękujemy! Prosimy o dalsze modlitwy o nowe powołania.

The Gospel passage today begins with the disciples gathered behind locked doors filled with fear. Then something wonderful happens. Jesus appears to his friends and their fear turns into joy. Jesus greets the disciples with the calming words, “Peace be with you.” Then he breathes on them saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Jesus empowers his disciples for an important mission of reconciliation. They are empowered to go out and heal the world. Let us pray. Lord Jesus, Send us your Spirit so that we may give witness to your love. Open our hearts to the needs of others, and help us use our gifts for the good of all people. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. Entonces sucede algo maravilloso. Reflections on the Priesthood A PRIEST “To live in the midst of the world without wishing its pleasures; to be a member of each family, yet belonging to none; to share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets; to heal all wounds; to go from men to God and offer Him their prayers; to return from God to men to bring pardon and hope; to have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity; to teach and to pardon, console and bless always, My God, what a life! And it is yours, O Priest of Jesus Chris!” - Fr. Henri-Dominique Lacordaire APOSTLE PRIESTS

If you are interested please contact: Fr. Dominic Tran, SDB 148 Main Street, P.O. Box 639 New Rochelle, NY 10802 (914) 636-7445 [email protected]

The priest! Have you ever considered the difficulty of conceiving what is a priest? Have you ever explained to yourself, not how there have always been priests, and how there is still so great a number, but how there is even one? He who can meditate upon the priest, and not be struck by his existence, I pity that man! What, then, is a priest? Is he a man who promotes morality— an officer of morality, as the 18th century said? But, external to Christianity, where is the morality of the priest? What was the morality of the pontiffs of Greece and Rome? The priest, is he a philosopher? But philosophy combats the priest. Is he a public functionary of any kind? But if all the sovereigns of Europe and of the world combined to make a priest, they would only end by bringing on a man ridicule and disgrace… The priest, the man who exists neither by morality, nor by philosophy, nor by the state, nor by the world! The man impossible to create, and who, nevertheless, exists always and everywhere! What is he, in fine? The priest is a man anointed by tradition to shed blood, not as the soldier, through courage, not as the magistrate, through justice, but as Jesus Christ, through love. The priest is a man of sacrifice; by it, each day, reconciling heaven and earth, and by it, each day, announcing to every soul the primordial truths of life, of death, and of resurrection. - Fr. Henri-Dominique Lacordaire -

Called To Be A Catechist Our catechetical formation and Religious Education Program is a journey toward a deeper understanding of our Catholic beliefs and traditions. It is an awareness to accept the faith in which we have been baptized and the effective catechesis (teaching) of God's word. The gospel is passed on person-to-person, not book-to-book. The catechist who passes on the message of the gospel is OUR GIFT. The gospel tells the stories, but the catechist must make them real in the way they interact with the children. Think about accompanying our children and young people on their faith journey! Pray on it! Classes are offered in the afternoon and evening on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. Our Special Religious Ed Program meets on Sunday Morning. Please Contact the Religious Ed Office at 914-881-1404.
