Pastor’s Corner

Desde el Escritorio del Párroco

After two long years of preparation, this weekend we come together to celebrate the Eucharist as a new parish community for the first time! God is very good to us! As I was thinking on what to share with you, three simple reflections came to mind. First, our bulletin today does not bear the name of the new parish, instead it caries the pictures of our four churches. Regardless of the new name the Cardinal will give us, the names Our Lady of Mercy, Our Lady of the Rosary, Sacred Heart and Corpus Christi will always be integral to our parish identity. Even though we may not be using those buildings as we have in the past—the spirit of faith, hope and love that developed and grew in each of those churches lives on in the new, united faith community that we are forming. For those parishes, “life is changed, not ended” and so we enter this new experience filed with HOPE! Second, beginning next Sunday and the following Sundays until July 30, at the beginning of each of the Masses we will have four candles representing the four churches surrounding the Pascal Candles. Those candles will be lit, the Pascal Candle will not. On the fourth Sunday, we will extinguish the four candles and light the Pascal Candle: Christ unites our churches together, and even as we form one new community —the foundation of all, Jesus Christ, remains the same and it is He who is the cornerstone of our new community—not a stone, but the living Christ Himself! Third, we come together to celebrate Eucharist. Eucharist means Thanksgiving. Today, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for the many graces and blessings we have received through the life and faith of our parishes in Port Chester. These parishes always served as a source of spiritual and material strength to our immigrant communities whether it was the recently arrived Irish immigrants of 1854 or the Italian immigrants of 1904 or the Polish immigrants of 1917 or the more recent immigrants from Latin America—the Church in Port Chester continues to grow, give life and unite. Eucharist, one bread, made of many grains of wheat! Today we are called to be Eucharist in a special way— one new faith community coming together from many—giving ourselves to each other in love and friendship as Jesus does for us! We thank God for the great gift of unity in diversity which is ours in our new parish! God bless you!

Pensando nisso, me veio à mente três reflexões.

Guidelines for the Reception of Communion FOR CATHOLICS As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (Code of Canon Law, canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. FOR OUR FELLOW CHRISTIANS We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration for the Eucharistic as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ prayer for us “that they may all be one” (John 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united and ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharist sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directive of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 § 3). FOR THOSE NOT RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. FOR NONE CHRISTIAN We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.
