~ REFLECTION ~ Today as we gather at God’s invitation, we will hear the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. It interprets our first reading’s condemnation of those who hoard their own wealth with vivid imagery. Both passages are about the choices that we can make in this life. As we continue this celebration, may our prayer be for the grace to make the right choices in our own lives.
Question of the Week: Where must I look this week to see the Jesus I love and worship in someone in need and offer my wholehearted care and compassion?

TEN REASONS FOR GOING TO MASS Not so long ago Catholics felt they had to have a 106o fever and a fractured pelvis to be excused from Sunday Mass. Now, some Catholics (especially young ones, but many older ones too) miss a succession of Sundays for much lighter reasons and still consider themselves active members of the Church. Many “ordinary” Catholics find themselves emotionally attached to the old way that stressed obligation. Yet they admire one aspect of the less rigid approach: the freely choosing to attend rather than fearing not to. The following is an attempt to “have it both ways”, as much as possible. Why do I – any Catholic follower of Christ – both freely and responsibly chose to join the Eucharistic community each Sunday, and other times as well?
1. WHY GO TO MASS? BECAUSE I OWE GOD
Not a very appealing reason, I admit, but it’s rock bottom. God, I hope we believe, is “behind it all”. I believe that God not only created everything, taking maybe 20 billion years – but that he has to keep on keeping everyone and everything in existence. I will be alive one second or one hour from now if God keeps on keeping me alive. It’s something like being a baby in a mother’s womb. If nourishment from the mother stops, the baby dies. In our case – and it’s the case of the stars and oceans and mountains and caterpillars and computers –we are always unborn babies as far as needing God’s creative and sustaining power is concerned, no matter how mature and independent we may be psychologically.
