~ REFLECTION ~

At the beginning of this month in which we honor and remember our beloved dead, we encounter scriptures that inspire our faith in the resurrection of the dead. In the face of the unspeakable horror related in the first reading, in which seven brothers are slain in front of their mother, who also is about to be killed, their faith in the life to come is remarkable. In the Gospel Jesus affirms life after death with unassailable logic. As we move through this month, let us pray for a deeper faith in the promise of eternal life.

~ REFLEXION ~

DID YOU KNOW?

Fear is a powerful motivator, and unfortunately, it fuels the secrecy behind many instances of child abuse. A predator will use fear to manipulate his or her victims, making it hard to end the abuse. Often, abuse victims are too scared or embarrassed to speak up, especially if the abuser is someone they know. Abusers can use close relationships to inspire fear of retaliation and may also stress that no one will believe their victim. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Don’t Let a Perpetrator Use Fear to Manipulate Your Child,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.

SABIA USTED?

TEN REASONS FOR GOING TO MASS Not so long ago Catholics felt they had to have a 106o fever and a fractured pelvis to be excused from Sunday Mass. Now, some Catholics (especially young ones, but many older ones too) miss a succession of Sundays for much lighter reasons and still consider themselves active members of the Church.

Many “ordinary” Catholics find themselves emotionally attached to the old way that stressed obligation. Yet they admire one aspect of the less rigid approach: the freely choosing to attend rather than fearing not to. The following is an attempt to “have it both ways”, as much as possible. Why do I – any Catholic follower of Christ – both freely and responsibly chose to join the Eucharistic community each Sunday, and other times as well?

7. WHY GO TO MASS? BECAUSE I HAVE SINNED. We might almost accuse God of making us spoiled children. Being God, he can't help loving us. He can't help forgiving us. He just is forgiveness. There is no unforgivable sin except refusing to be forgiven. Shall I be a freeloader, then? Just presume God's forgiveness? Go blithely along with no sense of healthy shame, simple gratitude — at least a bit of embarrassment? Don't we all, rather, need to respond to God's goodness with some visible, external action? True again, I can go out into the woods and tell God, "I am sorry.", (Why do those who say this never actually go to those woods?), but the most proper place to be reconciled is the place where the redeeming death and resurrection of Jesus is made present to us — where the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus is, and where he specifically invites us to remember Him. And, of course, if I am not a sinner, my heart will be so pure and responsive that I won't be able to wait to get there!
