Sts. Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary - July 26 Anne, is the traditional name of the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Joachim, was the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Both were the grandparents of Jesus. Tradition has it they first lived in Galilee and later settled in Jerusalem where the Blessed Virgin Mary was born and raised. Joachim and Anne were a rich and pious couple who had been married for a long time, but found themselves childless. The couple prayed fervently and promised to dedicate their first born to the service of God. An angel appeared to Anne and told her, "The Lord has looked upon thy tears; thou shalt conceive and give birth and the fruit of thy womb shall be blessed by all the world". Joachim also received the same message from the angel. Anne gave birth to a daughter whom she called Miriam (Mary), who was conceived without sin. We know very little about the lives of Joachim and Anne, but we do know that they must have been outstanding people to have been entrusted with raising the Mother of God. PRAYER TO ST. JOACHIM AND ST ANNE

Great and glorious patriarch, St Joachim, and good St Anne, what joy is mine when I consider that you were chosen among all God’s holy ones to assist in the fulfillment of the mysteries of God, and to enrich our earth with the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. By this singular privilege, you have become most powerful with both the Mother and her Son, so as to be able to obtain for us the graces that are needful to us. With great confidence I have recourse to your mighty protection, and I commend to you all my needs, both spiritual and temporal, and those of my family. Especially do I entrust to your keeping the particular favor that I desire and look for from your interces sion. And since you were a perfect pattern of the interior life, obtain for me the grace to pray earnestly, and never to set my heart on thepassing goods of this life. Give me a lively and enduring love for Jesus and Mary. Obtain for me also a sincere devotion and obedience to Holy church and the sovereign pontiff who rules over her, in order that I may live and die in faith, and hope and perfect charity. Let me ever invoke the holy Names of Jesus and Mary. And may I thus be saved. Amen. St. Mary Magdalene - July 22: Mary Magdalene, was a Jewish woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to his crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. She is mentioned by name twelve times in the canonical gospels, more than most of the apostles. Mary's epithet Magdalene most likely means that she came from the town of Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Saint Bridget, Religious - July 23: She was married at the age of thirteen and lived happily with her husband for twenty -eight years, bearing eight children. They were a pious couple. When her husband died, Bridget then spent three years in mourning in a Cistercian monastery. She founded the monastery that would eventually be her burial place. But it wasn’t built to house an existing order. Responding to the words of Jesus, Bridget wanted to reform monastic life by founding a new congregation, the Order of the Most Holy Savior, or the Bridgettines. The Rule for the new order was revealed to her throughout numerous and detailed visions. It was built on the rule of Saint Benedict and was approved by the Pope. Saint Bridget was canonized in 1391, due to her Christian virtue, her deep and sincere piety, her life of strict poverty and assistance to the poor, her devotion to the Virgin Mary, and her pilgrimages to the shrines of the saints. She was a saint who loved saints. Saint Sharbel Makhluf, Hermit - July 24: Saint Sharbel, baptized as Youssef (Arabic for Joseph), was one of five children in a poor family from a remote village of Lebanon. They were devout Maronite Catholics and had priests and monks in their family. He displayed a tender devotion to the Virgin Mary and a natural disposition toward prayer. In his early twenties, he left home to enter a monastery and made his religious profession and took the name Sharbel (or Charbel) after a second century martyr from Antioch, a city from Lebanon. He was ordained priest in 1859, and returned to his monastery to live as a strictly observant monk practicing austere mortifications. In 1875 he was granted the privilege to live as a hermit in a chapel under his monastery’s supervision and care. And there he stayed—alone, isolated, mortified, poor, reflective, and silent—for the next twenty-three years in Christian “solitary confinement,” willingly separating himself from the world so he could more easily attach himself to Christ. He died of a stroke at the age of seventy while saying the Divine Liturgy. He slumped to the floor with the Holy Eucharist still in his hands! Saint Sharbel lived the model life of an Eastern hermit-monk in the ancient tradition of Saint Anthony of the Desert. St. James, Apostle - July 25: This James is the brother of John the Evangelist. The two were called by Jesus as they worked with their father in a fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee. “He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him” (Mark 1:19-20). He alone, with Peter and John, was admitted to the house of Jairus when the dead maiden was raised to life. They alone were taken up to the high mountain apart, and saw the face of Jesus shining as the sun, and His garments white as snow; and these three alone witnessed the fearful agony in Gethsemane. James was apparently the first of the apostles to be martyred. No other Apostle’s martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament. Perhaps he was singled out by Herod because of his fiery temperament. He would not have been one to retract a statement. He and his brother, after all, earned the nickname the “Sons of Thunder” from Christ himself (Mk 3:17).

Estamos pidiendo a todos por favor que sean pacientes y sigan la señales como se indica. Muchas gracias por su paciencia y comprensión. St. Vincent De Paul Society Hotline Number 916-733-2010 We learn in the gospel readings that Jesus loves outcasts and sinners and he has a special place in his heart for those in need. Every word he spoke and every action he took was motivated by love. Maybe today we can reflect on the love of Jesus for those around us and ask him to help us find one way we can share his love with them. We might consider donating food and money to be used to serve the poor and needy in our parish community. Please be as generous as you can so that together we can spread the love of Jesus to as many people as we can. Thank you!
