Presentation of the Lord The feast was first observed in the Eastern Church as "The Encounter." In the sixth century, it began to be observed in the West: in Rome with a more penitential character and in Gaul (France) with solemn blessings and processions of candles, popularly known as "Candlemas." The Presentation of the Lord concludes the celebration of the Nativity and with the offerings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon, the events now point toward Easter. "In obedience to the Old Law, the Lord Jesus, the first-born, was presented in the Temple by his Blessed Mother and his foster father. This is another 'epiphany' celebration insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the blessing and procession of candles on this day. In the Middle Ages this feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or 'Candlemas,' was of great importance "The specific liturgy of this Candlemas feast, the blessing of candles, is not as widely celebrated as it should be, except of course whenever February 2 falls on a Sunday and thus takes precedence. There are two ways of celebrating the ceremony, either the Procession, which begins at a 'gathering place' outside the church, or the Solemn Entrance, celebrated within the church." But with your help, we can alleviate some of their anxiety just by providing food for some healthy meals until they can get back on their feet. We also can provide vouchers to families for home goods and clothing through the St Vincent de Paul Thrift Store on Watt Ave. Your donations of cash , toiletries, and non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated to meet these needs. CONFIRMATION RETREAT 2019 Spiritual Retreat for the Confirmation Candidates of St. Charles Borromeo Parish on February 8-10, 2019 will be at the Marello Youth Retreat Center in Loomis, California, a ministry by the Oblates of St. Joseph.
ESPACIO CATEQUÍSTICO ¨EL CATEQUISTA ES EL CORAZÓN DE LA IGLESIA¨

Estimados lectores, la semana pasada compartimos acerca del valor de la oración en nuestra vida y el cuidado personal de tener espacios de encuentro con el Señor para no caer en una anemia espiritual. Y más aún si somos catequistas o evangelizadores no podemos pasar por alto espacios de oración para que nuestro servicio en la Iglesia sea fecundo. Estamos llamados a ser evangelizadores con espíritu, de lo contrario tenemos el riesgo de hablar mucho de Dios, pero hablar poco con Dios. Muchas veces nos preocupa más estar certificados, tener una constancia que avale nuestra preparación que estar fundamentados en la oración, ¿la certificación es importante? Claro que sí, pero sólo es un pequeño paso, lo más importante es el trato continúo y asiduo con el Señor, el Papa Francisco decía a los catequistas de todo el mundo reunidos en Roma en el año 2013, ¿te dejas mirar por el Señor? Él nos mira y ésta es una manera de rezar. ¿Te dejas mirar por el Señor? ¿Cómo se hace? Miras el Sagrario y te dejas mirar… Así de sencillo. Es un poco aburrido, me duermo… ¡Duérmete, duérmete! De todas formas, Él te mirará, igualmente te mirará. Pero tienes la certeza de que Él te mira. Y esto es mucho más importante que el título de catequista: forma parte del “ser” catequista. Esto caldea el corazón, mantiene encendido el fuego de la amistad con el Señor, te hace sentir que verdaderamente te mira, está cerca de ti y te ama. Dejémonos mirar por el Señor en la oración, no hay mejor espacio para fortalecernos y saber comunicar palabras suyas, dejémonos mirar por Él y experimentemos su amor que nos cura y fortalece.
En estos tiempos y en un mundo tan digitalizado resulta casi imposible encontrar pretextos para no formarse para un mejor servicio en la catequesis. Si eres joven te invitamos a ser parte de Jóvenes Catequista, es un grupo que compartiendo su fe también apoya a la catequesis. Se reúnen todos los viernes a las 6:30 pm.
Y si eres niño no te olvides que también tienes un espacio en el grupo de niños catequistas, porque también los niños pueden ser catequistas y colaborar para que otros niños puedan conocer a Jesús. Este grupo se reúne los jueves a las 6:00 pm.
Los catequistas también necesitan formarse y por ello algunos asistirán al Congreso de Educación Religiosa en los Ángeles. Te invitamos a colaborar en las distintas actividades que se están realizando para recaudar fondos para esta formación; próximamente una RIFA de un Apple Watch y dos premios más.

Readers and Extraordinary Ministers for Holy Communion are needed for all English Masses. There will be a meeting on Thursday, February 7 at 7 PM in Conference Room in the Parish Office/Chapel building for parishioners interested in nurturing their spirit by participating in the Mass as a Reader or Extraordinary Minister for Holy Communion. Teens are welcome as Readers if they have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please answer the call of the Holy Spirit and join one or both of these rewarding ministries.
