PASTOR’S Reflection

Dear brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany. This special celebration, which is celebrated every year on January 6, commemorates the revelation of Jesus as the Christ to all human beings. The word "epiphany" has its roots in the Greek language. The first part of the word, "epi", means "upon". The second part, "phany", means "appear". By combining these two meanings, "appear upon," we are reminded of the manifestation of the glory of Christ to all peoples. In the first reading from the book of Isaiah, we hear about a prophecy that was made approximately seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus. In those days the Israelites rejoiced because after years of captivity, they were finally allowed to return to the holy city of Jerusalem. The prophecy of Isaiah gave them hope that the promised Messiah would soon rise from among the people and that his glory would be seen by all. Because they were the chosen people of God, it was prophesied to the Jewish nation that they would be the light of the world and that the nations of the world would come to their light. While the prophecy spoke of the wealth and the multitude of camels that would be brought to the Israelites, this was spoken in symbolic language. The real wealth that the Jewish nation gained was that the Son of God was born in flesh and blood in the land of his people. From its people, the Holy Catholic Church had its beginning. From its people, the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without stain. From its people, we have received the Old Testament. From its people, as instruments of God, salvation came to the world through Jesus Christ. The riches that the Lord God Almighty has

Conchita, Tell Us about Your Life Conchita tells us about the foundation of the fourth Work of the Cross: the Covenant of Love with the Sacred Heart of Jesus: In the month of October, 1909, the Lord told me about the COVENANT OF LOVE, and he continued talking about it for several days. On the 24th, he gave me the statutes for this association: “I want an association of lay people that is spiritually connected to the Oasis, but is nevertheless independent. It will have appropriate guidelines so that the members can lead a holy life in their homes. This is a work of salvation which will spread widely.” I communicated all of this to the Archbishop of Puebla, Monsignor Ibarra. He liked the project very much, he studied it, gave it canonical form and approved the association for his diocese on November 3rd. Five days later the first small group pf the “Covenant of Love with the Sacred Heart of Jesus” began its work in Puebla. Other bishops established the association in their dioceses, so much so that by May 1910 there were many members! This work has evolved, as has evolved the Apostleship of the Cross, from some recent Statutes, we extract the following: “The members of the Covenant of Love are to be lay men and women who have achieved a certain level of spiritual maturity, who live a solid Christian life, and who have the capacity to make a firm commitment to a life filled with a sense of community and apostolic action. They should also have sufficient knowledge about the Spirituality of the Cross that is made manifest in the way they live their daily lives.” “Called to transform ourselves into Christ the Priest, holy, innocent, without blemish, we should live in a constant struggle against personal and social sin in all of its manifestations. We will seek an increasing purification in order to reach a holy life pleasing to God.” “As laity, we shall seek that balance between an intense prayer life and the fulfillment of the duties of our state of life.” “In this work, the dimension of community is a fundamental element. It leads us to share our personal reality, our prayer, and our apostolic action as brothers and sisters.” We will strive to actively participate, with the spirit of spreading the good news, in the social, cultural, political and economic life around us.” “We will try to create consciousness of the social dimension of sin.” “We shall strive to establish social structures that promote respect for human dignity.” “In our apostolic action we will give preference to the poorest and neediest members of our society.”

P. Gerardo Alberto, MSpS

A WAITING HARVEST
Vocation Awareness
This is just what Priests do! Priests Defend the People of God from the Enemy Part I My secretary buzzed me in my office: “Father, there is a woman on the phone who wants to speak to a priest, and she’s crying.” I didn’t know the woman , but she was in desperate need of help, for, as she told me, she had a demon in her home. I quickly learned why I did not know her. She was a Baptist! I asked her, “Have you already called your Baptist minister about this little problem?” “Oh no, Father. I called you straight away! Don’t priests do this kind of thing?” I thought to myself, “Not if I can help it.” But I invited her in and she arrived with her two college aged daughters in tow.
had come and started moving the letters on the board, answering their questions. “but the problem, Father, is that when the game was over and our friends went home, the demon stayed. There is some evil presence in our home and we can all feel it. We're terrified. Please help us!” I told them that, first of all, they needed to tell Jesus they were sorry for their actions. They needed his help and they had better first ask for his forgiveness. This is what priests do. From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen
The three women looked terrible. They had not slep in days. They explained to me what had happened. The previous weekend they had had a party and played with a Ouija board. They said it was amazing—some spirit
O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.

We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them! T y p o l o g y The Power of a Single Act of Kindness Kianna Garmanian
For as long as I can remember, my parents have divided up the household responsibilities and chores for my brother and I to complete each day. Through all my years of doing chores, I honestly never remember being excited about these responsibilities. Whenever my parents asked me to empty the trash or clean the dishes, there was never a smile on my face. Oh, and don’t even get me started on vacuuming! If it was my turn to vacuum the whole house, that certainly put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day. In other words, I have never been particularly fond of chores and I believe it’s safe to say that many people would agree with me on this matter.
Along with myself, my brother also does not classify housework duties to be a particularly fun or joyful experience. Both of us are not always cooperative when it comes to completing our chores or listening to our parents when they ask us to do something. In grade school, I often found myself saying these words in confession… over and over again: “Father, I would like to confess for all the times I have not been a cheerful helper or have not obeyed my parents when they asked me to complete my duties.” And don’t get me wrong, I still find myself saying the same words in the confessional today! Yet, to my surprise, a profound experience recently occurred in my family. When I arrived home from college for Christmas break a few weeks ago, I felt inspired to serve my family more in little ways each day. Through small acts of kindness, I wanted to bring the love of Christ to each of my family members. With this, I began completing my chores without my parents having to ask and even surprised my brother by finishing his duties. I continued to do this, day after day, until my family finally caught on. One morning, my dad asked, “Who took out the garbage? And wait, who emptied the dishwasher and put the dishes away?” A slight smile appeared on my face and it was then that my family figured out what I had been doing. But wait… the story gets better! The next day, I went downstairs to empty the dishwasher and the dishes were already put away. Then, I went to take out the trash and it was already taken out! Kianna has been a parishioner at What was happening!? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked up and saw, out SEAS together with her family since of all people, my brother doing my chores! In all my 20 years of life, I have rarely 2007. She is now a junior at St Martin’s witnessed my brother completing my household tasks for me. And there he was… University in Lacey. After her doing my chores with a smile on his face! Confirmation here in 2014, she was a So, what’s the moral of this story? A single act of kindness can go a long way. A single act of kindness can bring joy to another individual. A single act of kindness can be powerful. A single act of kindness can transform the world! Kindness is contagious. I invite you all to spread this beautiful gift with others in small, yet meaningful ways each day. God Bless!
