PASTOR’S Reflection
B
has two cloaks should share with the
reaking Open the Word person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise,” these of God:
Dear brothers and Sisters, the reading for this third Sunday of Advent are an invitation to defend joy. Zephaniah uses the following expressions in the first reading: shout for joy, sing joyfully, be glad and exult. Even in the darkest times, when everything seems at an end and nothing looks bright in the future, the prophet’s message is one of hope and joy because our journey belongs to God. This might be one of the hardest things to realize today, that God acts on our journey and there are reasons for joy. God acted in the past, and is still acting today, it just has become increasingly more difficult to see Him with our eyes or hearts because they only trust in human strength and have banned God from everyday life. This is why Paul tells the Philippians in the second reading: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! The Lord is near.” It’s the same message that John preached “one mightier than I is coming,” with Jesus, the Kingdom of God comes to humankind “a joy for all peoples.” But humankind must open themselves to God in something called conversion, a change of life, and this is at the core of the gospel today. The Kingdom is the absolute news that does not only imply a transformation from the old ways, but an interior change that gives new life to everything. We live in times full of speeches, promises, explanations, and there’s still a question: “what do we do?” People today do not ask what they should remember, learn by heart, meditate, on do they tell each other what to do, it’s up to each one of us, to our community, to our church. There is a foremost question and foremost answer that affects all of us: “Whoever
are the works of mercy.
But questions and mercy go beyond. Those who ask are the ones who have some responsibility over the yielding of power among the people. Kingdom are close. John’s reply is very pertinent today: “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed, Do not practice extortion do not falsely accuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.” Justice, alking together as honesty and peace are key to the call brothers and sisters: for social and ecclesial conversion, so necessary for human interaction and Dear brothers and Sisters, in our the coming of the joy of the Kingdom. journey this week, let us meditate on The joy of a person and these things. Let us ask ourselves community that grow, that overcome within our hearts: “Am I ready for the their crisis, that even with the risk of coming of the Lord Jesus? Conchita, Tell Us about Your Life Conchita Tells is about the death of people she loved Conchita suffered much with many deaths which touched her life. Before her marriage, “A terrible blow took me away from the world and its vanities to bring me close to God. My brother Manuel, the eldest of all my dearly beloved brothers, was suddenly shot to death. …It was a terrible tragedy but an accident. I returned home in sorrow, resolved to give myself wholly to God, to think more intimately about Him, to detach myself more fully from the trends which led me toward the vanities of the world.” She got married in November 1884 and in September 1901, “On the seventeenth, at 6:55 pm, the Lord took away from me the husband He had given me on earth for sixteen years, ten months and nine days. The Lord gave him to me, the Lord took him away from me. Blessed be His Holy Name! “I helped him die a good death. At that moment, my forehead resting on the forehead of him who was so good to me, I consecrated myself to God to be all for Him.” Her husband’s death abruptly changed her life, leaving her at once courageous and desolate. Her children were the love of her life but also played a role in her commitment to Jesus. “My son Carlos lived only six years and died of typhoid fever in 1893… My sorrow has never left me. His death was heartbreaking for me, and I felt such pain as I had never felt before.” And again, “Tuesday of April seventh [1903], a heart-breaking day for me: While I was sewing, suddenly I heard a voice which said to me: ‘Pedrito is in the pool in the garden.’ I ran outside, and I took him in my arms, soaking wet, stiff… a corpse. …I placed myself at the foot of my large Crucifix and there, I offered Him the sacrifice of my son, asking Him that there be fulfilled in me His divine will.” Later, it was Pablo who died, of typhoid fever, in this mother’s arms [June 24, 1913]. He was a fine young man of eighteen, most pure, of whom she was especially fond. “O Mother of sorrows, Mother who understands a mother who has just lost her beloved son, at Your hand, through Your stainless heart, offer my own son to the Most Holy Trinity that in my name and as something God had given me, it may be glorified.” Finally, her daughter, Concha, who had become Sister Teresa de Maria Inmaculada, had an illness overtake her in the heat of Monterrey. “Yesterday, December 19 [1925], at one forty-five in the afternoon, Teresa died! God of my heart be a thousand times blessed! …She was an angel, a victim, a saint.”

P. Gerardo Alberto, MSpS

A WAITING HARVEST
Vocation Awareness
This is just what Priests do! Priests Fight for the Souls of God’s People
A priest friend told me of something he had done as a young priest back in the 1960s. He was a pastor of a church and school in a small town. One day a parishioner came in with some astonishing news. This man worked for the city and he has just learned that a business license had been granted to a pornographic book store, which was to be located on the same block as the parish school. The priest sprang into action, organizing a campaign of letter writing and demonstrations. The mayor’s office was inundated with phone calls and letters. Editorials were written in the newspaper. A personal visit was made to the owner of the
new book store by a team of parishioners, many of them attorneys. Led by the priest, in the end, the store never opened. The people of God saw this as threat to the moral well-being of their children and community and they willingly and enthusiastically followed their shepherd in fighting that battle. And they won. This is just what priests do. From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen
O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.
This week please pray for Br. Jorge Haro M.Sp.S. Brother Jorge is taking Theology II classes at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX.

T y p o l o g y The Third Week of Advent: No Need for Sour Christmas! Kianna Garmanian
My friends, we have now reached the halfway mark in the advent season. How are you feeling? As the third week begins, this is the time to dive deeper into your relationship with Christ and reflect on your role as His disciple. Like the previous weeks, I invite you to spend 15-30 minutes in prayer with the reflection questions I will share. on:
The theme for this third week of advent is JOY. As we prepare our hearts for Christ, here are some questions to reflect How can I reflect on the joy of Jesus’ birth and coming this Advent season? How can I proclaim the Good News of Christ? Do I live with a joyful spirit? Do I serve others with a joyful heart? Do I have any bitterness, hatred, or unforgiveness within me that I need to wash away? Do I allow the joy of Christ to shine through my soul and inspire others? Am I a positive influence in the lives of others? How can I bring a smile to someone’s face this week?
I must admit… this is my favorite week in the advent season because I love the theme of joy! Here’s the truth: THE CHURCH DOESN’T NEED ANY SOUR/BITTER CHRISTIANS! What do I mean by this? Jesus is the Prince of Peace and source of all good things. Jesus brings true JOY into our lives and we are called to share this joy with others. Too often, we see Christians walking around with frowns on their Kianna has been a parishioner at faces and bitterness in their hearts. This is NOT attractive to others and will NOT lead SEAS together with her family since others to Christ. Perhaps you have fallen into this trap before… I know I have. 2007. She is now a junior at St Martin’s Imagine if you had a conversation with a cold-hearted Christian… you probably wouldn’t be inspired to learn more about the Catholic Church and Christ. We need Christians who are so inflamed with the love of Christ that their hearts are overflowing with joy! We need Christians who will fearlessly spread the holy name of Jesus to others with smiles on their faces! We need Christians who, despite the many crosses and difficulties in life, will remain faithful to Christ! Our Church needs YOU! Christ needs YOU! What is there to not be joyful about? Our Lord provides all our daily needs and loves us most infinitely and completely. Let us be joyful for Him!

With the Heart of Jesus
In the Eucharist we find all the good of the Church. In it we have the certainty that God is faithful to His promise and stays with us until the end of time. In our visits and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we experience the closeness of the good shepherd, the tenderness of His love, the presence of a faithful friend. We all experience this large support in our lives provided by faith and our personal and intimate dialogue with the Lord in the Eucharist. Come Adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Monday through Friday from 10am to 9pm.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our SEAS Parish is filled with generosity, mercy, and love, and this is very evident in your support of our Prayer Shawl Ministry. Thank you to all who have knitted or are knitting/crocheting Prayer Shawls for those who are so often alone or suffering illness or loss. Just so you will understand the impact of what you do, I am posting a note from a lady in Assisted Living who just received a beautiful shawl: “Thank you Nancy for your good start to my day. If you see Joan, would you please tell her special thanks for her care and time on behalf of the Prayer Shawl Project. It is very much my blessing to receive a beautiful (knitted with prayer and lovely thoughts) Prayer Shawl by Lee. Having a shawl as protection and support, as well as comfort, means so much to me. I will treasure this gift and it is valued as “my key” to open my day with prayer. Thank you, Nancy, for your caring heart and to you Joan for your warm efforts to care for others. Please let Lee know that her shawl brings me closer to Jesus each morning as I pray.” Thank you for knitting the shawls and for donating yarn. Please let me know your name when you do turn in yarn or shawls as I want to thank you properly. Bless you, Joan Kluck
