Pastor’s Corner This past Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we heard those brief but sobering words used by the priest as he placed the ashes on our heads: “you are dust and into dust you shall return.” A clear, simple and direct reminder to each of us that here we have no lasting city, we are a pilgrim people, passing through this world to go home to our Father’s house. As I reflect on this, I realize that although my human inclination is to attach myself to so many persons, places and things—and this is not bad in itself– I would be foolish if I placed all my surety in any of these. All I can really take with me when I die is my good deeds: how I have loved others. God all alone is my rock, my security—everything else will pass away. Naturally, at least for me, this reflection led me to our merger—which will be completed in just four very short months! We are confronting a major change in our religious life and practice and Jesus tells us clearly that we can’t put “new wine” in “old wine skins” even though that would be both comforting and comfortable. Instead. He tells us “new wine” has to go into “new wine skins” - if not, we lose every thing: wine and skins! Those of us old enough to have lived during Vatican II know how difficult it was leaving behind some of the external trappings of Faith we were so use to and taking on new expressions (remember how strange it was the first time the priest said Mass looking at the people!!). It was a time of tremendous change. Now, with the final merger so close at hand, we are being called to detach ourselves again from the places we are use to and to change, again. These next months, for us, will be a time of “letting go and moving on.” It isn’t all clear to us what are the “new wine skins” or the “old skins.” Still together, we are willing to walk in Faith, confident that through our obedience to our Archbishop, God is fulfilling His plan for us. The merger reminds us that we are a pilgrim church and that so long as we walk this earth, change and transition will touch our lives. Still, we are blessed we have traditions, scripture, the lives of saints and the guidance of our pastoral leaders to lead us to a new “promised land” —which, ultimately, will be heaven itself! My prayer is that during this Lent, as our merger askes us to “let go” we will put “new wine” in “new skins” and have the courage to walk by faith. God bless you!
Vamos deixar as coisas acontecerem.
