Dear Parishioners, In case you were elsewhere for Mass last weekend, I announced that the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus will be moving into our convent at St. Joseph campus, target date in the fall of 2020! Eight sisters came by on Wednesday and spent the whole day in the building, doing some prep work to get ready for January 12, when we will bring in the dumpsters. Please mark your calendars, all will be welcome and needed to help clear out the convent. I’d still love to hear suggestions about what people want to make sure is covered when we have our State of the Parish presentations/meetings next year. I’ve heard people would like to hear lots of details about how we’re doing in our ministries and our finances, both now and our plans for the future. I’ve also heard people would like to meet the staff, since we have some new faces. More suggestions are welcome! -Fr. Liekhus St. Juan Diego Feast Day Thursday December 9 Wednesday, December 12 7:00 a.m. Morning Prayer, Elevator Lobby Church level, St. Joseph Campus

December 9, 2018 Second Sunday of Advent Baruch 5:1-9; Psalm 126:1-6; Philippians 1:4-11; Luke 3:1-6 In the first reading the prophet Baruch instructs Jerusalem to shed the robe of mourning and weeping and put on the splendor of glory from God forever. In the responsorial psalm the psalmist reminds us what the Lord has done for us and we are filled with joy in response. In the second reading Paul reminds us that the good work begun in us will continue to completeness until the day Jesus returns. In the Gospel of Luke the word of God arrives born in a secluded place to an unexpected person, John the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth. John’s vocation was to prepare the way of the Lord. • Do you have a “robe or mantle” of something it’s time to let go of? Are you so focused on “something” you can’t embrace the joy God wants for you? • What has the Lord done for you since last Advent that has filled you with joy? • What does it mean to you to be in partnership with the Gospel? What does it mean to our parish? • How have you encountered God in your daily life? Have these encounters caught you by surprise? Were they totally unexpected? For more information or to sign up for a small group, contact Karen Fish at 952-239-1949.

Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community “Retired Religious” is the December recipient! PLEASE GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN A LIFETIME. During the early and mid-20th centuries, the Catholic Church in the United States experienced a surge in vocations to the religious life with numbers peaking in the mid-1960s. Care for elderly members was provided largely by younger ones. Over time, however, the number of vocations decreased while life spans increased. The result is far fewer younger members available to support the retirement and eldercare needs of senior members. In 2018, 68 percent of the religious communities providing data had a median age of 70 or older. Historically, Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests received small stipends that just met the needs of the day. Any surplus funds were reinvested in ministry and the education of younger members. As a result, hundreds of U.S. religious communities lack adequate retirement savings. Your tax-deductible gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides vital support for assisted-living and home-health services, nursing care, and more. It also helps to ensure ongoing viability for religious. Cash, coin, and checks are welcome or give online direct from your bank account or credit card. Checks are to be made out to St. Gabriel the Archangel church with “Retired Religious” written in the memo section. Visit the parish website to give online. Note: An envelope for Retired Religious is provided in our packet of envelopes. Please be generous on December 8 and 9. Loaves and Fishes on Monday, December 17 Sign up in the foyer at St. John campus or the Mainstreet entrance at St. Joseph campus to help prepare the meal at St. Joseph campus at 3:00pm or to set up, serve or clean up after the meal. Clean-up help is needed from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Monetary donations may be sent to St. Gabriel’s parish office, attention Loaves and Fishes.
