Pastor’s Corner

Desde el Escritorio del Párroco

In these recent weeks and days, a lot has been going on politically in our nation—some of it “extraordinary” at both ends of the spectrum. Certainly, for myself, it is a sign of the constant battle that goes on in our world between good and evil. God and the devil. As Christians, we know the outcome; Jesus is already the Victor! At the same time, we can’t be so naïve as to believe that the devil is not working and making real inroads in our society.. Many of us remember the famous Paul Harvey and his radio commentaries. I recently came across this article of his and thought it something good for us to read and reflect on at this particular time in our nations history.

If I were the Devil… Paul Harvey

Si yo fuese el diablo ... Paul Harvey

I would gain control of the most powerful nation in the world; I would delude their minds into thinking that they had come from man’s effort, instead of God’s blessings; I would promote an attitude of loving things and using people, instead of the other way around; I would dupe entire states into relying on gambling for their state revenue; I would convince people that character is not an issue when it comes to leadership; I would make it legal to take the life of unborn babies; I would make it socially acceptable to take one’s own life, and invent machines to make it convenient; I would cheapen human life as much as possible so that the life of animals are valued more than human beings. I would take God out of the schools, where even the mention of His name was grounds for a lawsuit. I would come up with drugs that sedate the mind and target the young, and I would get sports heroes to advertise them; I would get control of the media, so that every night I could pollute the mind of every family member for my agenda; I would attack the family, the backbone of any nation; I would make divorce acceptable and easy, even favorable. If the family crumbles, so does the nation; I would compel people to express their most depraved fantasies on canvas and movie screens, and I would call it art; I would convince the world that a homosexual lifestyle should be accepted and marveled: I would convince the people that right and wrong are determined by a few who call themselves authorities and refer to their agenda as politically correct; I would persuade people that the church is irrelevant and out of date, and the Bible’s for the naïve; I would dull the minds of Christians, and make them believe that prayer is not important, and that faithfulness and obedience are optional; I guess I would leave things pretty much the same way they are. God bless you!

What is an Indulgence? First, a note about sin and punishment… When a person commits a mortal sin, if that person does not repent of that sin that person merits an eternal punishment (hell). This punishment is freely forgiven (and thus avoided) When the person makes use of the Sacrament of Confession, for example, if someone steals a car and wrecks it, God can forgive the person of theft and destruction of property. This is a manifestation of God’s mercy. When a person commits any sin, mortal or venial, there is also a temporal punishment . This is because every sin we commit offends God’s justice and damages the Body of Christ. Thus some sort of reparation must be made for our sinful actions. If we die before we make reparation, it will be purged in Purgatory prior to our entry into Heaven. On earth, this punishment can be remitted by the penance assigned in the Sacrament of Confession. In the example above, even though the sins of theft and destroying property are forgiven, someone still has to pay for the car. This is a manifestation of God’s justice. Sometimes we need more than the penance given to u in the sacrament of Confession to make up for our sins, especially if we do not confess all of our venial sins while confessing all of our mortal sins. It is also understandable that if a person committed a particularly grievous sin and was assigned to pray one Hail Mary as a penance, a little more might be needed to overcome the temporal punishment caused by the sin. So, another way to have the temporal punishment remitted is by an indulgence. An indulgence is a granting, through the power of the Church, of the graces of Christ and the merits of the saints for the remission of temporal punishment due to our sinful act. This, of course, presupposes that a person has received God’s forgiveness of at least their moral sins. There are two types of indulgences. A Plenary indulgence grants the remission of all temporal punishment due to a person because of their sins. A Partial indulgence grants a partial remission of the temporal punishment. This remission can be applied to the one performing the work or to a soul (or souls) in purgatory.
