The most recognizable "signs" are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don't do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don't deliver on their promises for our lives to be happier, healthier, and easier. On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God's providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim. "This is my blood of the covenant." At the time of the first Passover -- the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians -- the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross. Christ's Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It's a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes -- throughout the centuries and until the end of time -- the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you partake in the Eucharist today, and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always.

Jesús hizo por nosotros algo imposible de imaginar en la mente humana. Se dio a sí mismo. Su Cuerpo y su Sangre, comida del cielo para la salvación de todos nosotros. Este es el misterio que celebramos el Jueves Santo y este domingo. Jesús envía a dos de sus discípulos diciéndoles: "Vayan a la ciudad, y les saldrá al encuentro un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua" (Mc. 14:13). De esa forma encontrarían el lugar para preparar la Cena del Señor. Notemos que en Marcos no se menciona la pascua judía, el cordero, el paso del Mar ni la muerte de los guerreros egipcios. La cena pascual en Marcos es la cena de Jesús, en ella no se mencionan actos de violencia. Al contrario, el sacrificio del Señor es fuente de vida eterna para toda la humanidad de todos los tiempos. Ahora, la Eucaristía es la presencia viva y constante del Señor Jesús por medio de su Cuerpo y su Sangre. ¿Cómo honras la presencia del Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor? ¿Al comulgar lo haces con reverencia? Recuerda las palabras hermosas de Jesús: "Esto es mi Cuerpo, esta es mi Sangre" (Mc. 14:22-25). Y reflexiona en la siguiente pregunta. ¿A qué nos compromete recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo cada domingo en misa? Sabiendo que actualmente vivimos en un mundo de violencia y corrupción, no debe existir duda para nosotros. Jesús es amor y nos invita a dar amor a nuestro prójimo. Por lo tanto, la Eucaristía debe animarnos a practicar la justicia siempre.

ST. DAMIEN OF MOLOKAI PARISH Stewardship Thoughts Today’s Scripture readings emphasize the old and new covenants. In the Book of Exodus, Moses brings the ancient Israelites to an agreement with God through the sacrificial blood of young bulls. This action prefigures Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice on the cross for our sins, and the opportunity for eternal salvation. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews contrasts Old Testament sacrifices of goats and calves with the new covenant sealed in the very Blood of Christ. In St. Mark’s Gospel, the evangelist tells of Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist at our Lord’s Last Supper. This action begins the new covenant with His disciples and us — a covenant that continues today. As faithful stewards, we believe in Christ’s true presence: Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in Holy Communion. By receiving this tremendous gift, we become what we consume, finding strength to live virtuous and holy lives. As a result, with heart-felt gratitude, we deepen our love for God and neighbor in need. Check to see when Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction are scheduled in your parish and spend some quiet time with our Lord and Savior. Must I receive both the body and the blood of Christ to receive him fully? In recent years there has been a renewed interest and practice of receiving the Eucharist under both forms or species, bread and wine. But this is not necessary to receive the eucharistic presence of Christ. The Council of Trent taught that the presence of Christ in the Eucharist begins with the words of consecration and endures as long as the species of bread and wine subsist. Furthermore, Christ is present whole and entire in both species and in all parts of the species. So if the bread is broken the presence of Christ is not divided (CCC 1377). If one receives a larger portion of bread, they do not receive more Christ! In the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, paragraph 281 states, "Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds." Paragraph 282 goes on to remind us that we are not deprived of any grace necessary for salvation when we receive Communion under one form. People who are allergic to wheat may receive just the cup and they gain the same grace and presence as one who receives just the bread. Christ is present fully and completely, whatever the sacramental form we choose.

On Saturday, May 19, Archbishop Vigneron ordained three men to the Catholic priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit. Congratulations to Fr. Christopher Muer, Fr. Mark Livingston, and Fr. John Maksym. Rev. Christopher Muer, 30, is the son of David and Mary Lou Muer. He entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary from his home parish of St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park. He will begin his priestly ministry at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Waterford. Rev. Mark Andrew Livingston, 41, is the son of Mark and Linda Livingston. He entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary from his home parish of St. Pius X in Southgate. He will begin his priestly ministry at St. John Neumann Parish and All Saints School in Canton. Rev. John A. Maksym, 56, is the son of Anthony and Dr. Jeanne Maksym (both deceased). He entered Pope Saint John XXIII National Seminary from his home parish of St. Ambrose in Grosse Pointe Park.
