Dear Parents, It is so great to have a full week of school this week. The students have been working so hard! Things we learned this week: Religion-​The students have been learning about the Kingdom of God. We discussed being ambassadors for Jesus and the students wrote down what they would say about Jesus if a non-believer asked them to share something about their Savior. There were many great responses! We also looked at the meaning symbols found in religious artwork. Math-​Angles and triangles were the topics this week. The students learned how to identify triangles by their angles and the length of their sides. We also learned to add angles together or subtract angles to get new measurements. There are some websites and videos about our topics below. Reading-​The students read about New Year’s Eve and Day superstitions and practiced If...Then statements. They read about the Louisiana Purchase to find the main idea and details. Students had opportunities to read their January book report books and sign up for the day they want to do their book reports. The days/student names are listed below. Grammar-​The students played a paper game to practice past-tense verbs with a partner. They had to say the past-tense verb and spell it correctly to move ahead on the gameboard. Writing-Our class has been working very hard on writing persuasive essays. They had to pick a topic, decide on their opinion, research main ideas and details, then complete their rough draft using a paper template. Their rough draft will be due on Monday, January 14. Next week, the students will be working on typing their final copies. Social Studies-​We began the geography unit this week. The students matched terms and definitions about geography. They also learned the names of the continents and oceans. Compass rose, latitude, and longitude were parts of a map that we began learning about. Today, they played a game of finding the states in the United States. See how well you do with the states using the link below. (Did you beat your child’s score?) If you are interested in ordering from Scholastic, the deadline to order will be Thursday, January 17. Our class code is ​P9T8Q. ​Students who have already received their birthday book coupon from me can use it between now and the beginning of May. Mid-trimester reports will be coming home on Tuesday, January 15. There will be a cover letter that should be signed and returned. You may keep the mid-trimester report. The reports will be handed to the students this time, not put in the Tuesday envelopes. Please ask your child to show you their mid-trimester report. Queridos padres, Es genial tener una semana completa de clases esta semana. ¡Los estudiantes han estado trabajando tan duro! Cosas que aprendimos esta semana: Religión​-Los estudiantes han estado aprendiendo sobre el Reino de Dios. Hablamos de ser embajadores de Jesús y los alumnos escribieron lo que dirían sobre Jesús si un no creyente les pidiera que compartieran algo sobre su Salvador. ¡Hubo muchas grandes respuestas! También vimos el significado de los símbolos que se encuentran en las obras de arte religiosas. Los ángulos de matemáticas y los triángulos fueron los temas de esta semana. Los estudiantes aprendieron a identificar triángulos por sus ángulos y la longitud de sus lados. También aprendimos a sumar ángulos o restar ángulos para obtener nuevas mediciones. Su borrador se entregará el lunes 14 de enero. La próxima semana, los estudiantes trabajarán en escribir sus copias finales. Estudios Sociales​-Comenzamos la unidad de geografía esta semana. Los estudiantes combinaron términos y definiciones sobre geografía. También aprendieron los nombres de los continentes y océanos. Compass rose, latitude y longitude fueron partes de un mapa que comenzamos a conocer. Hoy, jugaron un juego de encontrar los estados en los Estados Unidos.
