Dear Families for Room 7 Students, Happy SPRING! Finally, we have some warmer weather to enjoy! Here is what we have been talking about this week: Religion-The class has been studying the Called to Protect curriculum for keeping children safe. We have talked about good friends and safe adults. We also talked about unsafe adults and how they may make you feel (weird on the inside) by what they say or what they do. On Friday, we will be acting out scenarios where students need to think about the situation and ask a safe adult for help (An adult wants to buy you a video game that your parents said, “No, you may not buy that game.” What would you do?) Math- The classes have begun their unit in measurement. This week, we have been focusing on meters and liters. Students are learning to convert meters to kilometers, centimeters, or millimeters, and they are also learning to convert liters to kiloliters, centiliters, or milliliters. Reading- We have been hearing book reports throughout the week from the students who are finished early. The class has been practicing taking notes while reading a nonfiction book. They picked another nonfiction book that small groups will be reading and taking some notes on using index cards. That will continue next week. It was our week to go to the preschool room to read with our Reading Buddies. Writing-The students have learned to add details to boring sentences to make them more interesting. They started out with some boring sentences. “Moses helped. The cat stalked. The girl forgave. The boy prayed. The wind whistled. The man stumbled. The car lurched.” By answering questions like When? What size? Where? What name? the students added details to the sentences. Grammar-Our topic this week is using irregular verbs in sentences. For example: eat, ate, has eaten and fly, flew, has flown. Each student created a Google doc that included irregular verbs used in various sentences. Social Studies-We began our Social Studies unit on Citizenship and Government on Monday. The students have learned what makes a good citizen. They also learned about rights and responsibilities of citizens. Today, I read to them the story of Malala Yousafzai, who stood up to the Taliban in Pakistan and fought for girls to have the right go to school. We also watched a short movie where Malala Yousafzai spoke about her experiences. Mrs. Blahnik and Mrs. Waack For the above Lenten Family Forgiveness Event, we are in need of 50 plastic lids to put under flower pots. The lids could come from larger yogurt containers, small Cool Whip containers, sour cream or cottage cheese containers, etc. Please check your cupboards and your elderly family members’ cupboards for small plastic container lids. Your child can bring them to school next week. Thank you! Students are still able to sign up for Sailing with the Savior. It is $25 for an evening of food, fun, and friendship with other third, fourth, and fifth graders. Friday, April 26 from 3:45-7:00. See the attachment in this email or go to the school website and look under “My Teacher” for a list of all previous newsletters and other information. Reminder that we are going on a field trip to Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center on Monday, March 25. We will be leaving school at 9:00 and returning by 3:00. The students can wear regular uniform clothes that day. We will not be outside to get dirty. Remember to send a disposable lunch bag for their lunch if one was not ordered from the school lunch program. I will have a cooler along for students’ lunches. Please do not send electronics to play with on the bus. Notebooks and pens/pencils will be accepted (and will stay on the bus). There will be Reconciliation on Tuesday, March 26 for our classroom. It will be in the afternoon for about 30 minutes. There are five or six priests coming for the students that day. We will be reviewing the procedure on Tuesday morning, as well as doing a short examination of conscience. If your child has not made their First Reconciliation, they will not be required to go to Reconciliation on Tuesday. Book report sharing will be next week. My math class estimated then measured the length of our hallway. How many meters long is our hallway? They also estimated how many kiloliters (and liters) are in an Olympic sized swimming pool. (Hall is 67 meters long; 2,500 kiloliters/2,500,000 liters in the swimming pool) What happened at the end of The Best School Year Ever, the book Mrs. Waack just finished reading?

Queridas familias para los estudiantes del salón 7, ¡Feliz primavera! Finalmente, tenemos un clima más cálido para disfrutar! Matemáticas: Las clases han comenzado su unidad en medida. Esta semana, nos hemos centrado en metros y litros. Los estudiantes están aprendiendo a convertir metros a kilómetros, centímetros o milímetros, y también están aprendiendo a convertir litros a kilolitros, centilitros o mililitros. Lectura: hemos estado escuchando informes de libros durante toda la semana de los estudiantes que terminaron temprano. La clase ha estado practicando tomando notas mientras lee un libro de no ficción. Escogieron otro libro de no ficción que los grupos pequeños leerán y tomarán algunas notas sobre el uso de tarjetas de índice. Eso continuará la próxima semana. Cada estudiante creó un documento de Google que incluía verbos irregulares usados en varias oraciones. Estudios sociales: comenzamos nuestra unidad de estudios sociales sobre ciudadanía y gobierno el lunes. Los alumnos han aprendido lo que hace un buen ciudadano. También aprendieron sobre los derechos y responsabilidades de los ciudadanos. Hoy, les leí la historia de Malala Yousafzai, quien se enfrentó a los talibanes en Pakistán y luchó para que las niñas tuvieran el derecho de ir a la escuela.
