Hello Parents and Students, This week marks the beginning of the second half of school! Unbelievable how fast time flies! Here is what we have been studying this week: Religion​-Our class started learning about The Parables of Jesus. They read through some parables and decided on one they wanted to illustrate. I hope to have them hanging up for Open House on Jan. 27. Math​-The week was filled with lines and quadrilaterals. We learned what a parallel line, perpendicular line, and intersecting line are. We also looked at four-sided shapes (quadrilaterals) and studied their angles and lengths of their sides. Reading​-The students searched for and colored evidence to answer questions about the first day of school and Pearl Harbor. They found the main idea and details in a paragraph from the Wizard of Oz. There was also some time to read their book report books and tell me what they want to do for their book report project. Writing​-Each of the students has been working hard on finishing their rough draft and then type their final copy of their persuasive essay. I am impressed with the quality of work the students are putting into this assignment. The final copy should be typed by Monday morning, January 21. A few students need to finish typing over the weekend. If they do not know how to get into their school’s google account at home, let me know and I will try to walk you through the process of finding their google school account. Some of the students finished their persuasive essays and have begun a Winter story where they had five choices of a story starter to begin a new story. Grammar​-The students tried a website to practice finding verbs. It is in the links below. Social Studies​-Our class has been studying latitude and longitude this week. We have practiced reading latitude and longitude and then went on Google Earth and/or ​www.latlong.net to find places and their latitude and longitude coordinates. They also are studying the 12 states that make up the Midwest Region of the USA. We have a song to sing to remember the states in order. We have two short stories for another way to remember the states’ order. The links are below. There will be a Midwest States test on Thursday, Jan. 24. While working on Google Earth, the students were excited to find their own houses. A few students had a hard time being able to find their houses because they do not know their addresses. Please check to see if your child know his/her address. This could be a safety factor if they ever got lost or separated from you. Thanks! If you are interested in ordering from Scholastic, the deadline to order will be Thursday, January 17. Our class code is ​P9T8Q. ​Students who have already received their birthday book coupon from me can use it between now and the beginning of May.

Next week Sunday, January 27, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, St. Bernard School will be having an Open House and kick off Catholic Schools Week. Families are encouraged to visit our school and bring along a special friend (to take the place of Special Persons’ Day we had in previous years). Many activities will be set up throughout the school. Room 7 will have a STEAM (science technology engineering art math) activity that includes paper airplanes! Design your own paper airplane and see how far it will fly!! Friends and family are welcome to try it out!! If any Room 7 students come to our classroom and sign in, they will be receiving a FREE homework pass to use on one assignment (not on a book report, project or test)! I will be passing out FREE homework passes the following week. Hola padres y alumnos, ¡Esta semana marca el comienzo de la segunda mitad de la escuela! ¡Increíble lo rápido que pasa el tiempo! Esto es lo que hemos estado estudiando esta semana: Religión:​ nuestra clase comenzó a aprender sobre las parábolas de Jesús. Leyeron algunas parábolas y decidieron una que querían ilustrar. Espero tenerlos colgando para la Casa Abierta el 27 de enero. Matemáticas:​La semana estuvo llena de líneas y cuadriláteros. Aprendimos lo que son una línea paralela, una línea perpendicular y una línea que se intersecta. También observamos formas de cuatro lados (cuadriláteros) y estudiamos sus ángulos y longitudes de sus lados. Lectura:​ los estudiantes buscaron y colorearon pruebas para responder preguntas sobre el primer día de clases y Pearl Harbor. Encontraron la idea principal y los detalles en un párrafo del Mago de Oz.
