The other day we got a call in the office from someone asking if we in the parish recited the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel every day after all the Masses. The person who called was pleased to hear we do recite the prayer every day, throughout the year. I thought it might be good to share some thoughts about this simple but powerful prayer. For those of us who are over 39 and can remember the Mass before the changes of the Council, we remember that at the end of each Mass we would kneel and pray what were called the “Leonine Prayers”. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII asked them to be said in response to the political situation between Italy and the Church at that time. However, the prayer to St. Michael was not included; this prayer was added in 1886. Why? It is said that one day while celebrating Mass, Pope Leo had a vision of the devil asserting terrible power over the Church. The Pope was visibly shaken by what he saw, and as a result composed the Prayer to St. Michael, basically begging protection for the Church against the powers of evil. There is a tendency today to “downplay” the devil and his power and influence. He is often depicted as a fairytale character to frighten people. His greatest ploy is to get people to think he really doesn’t exist. Let’s not be fooled! The truth is, the devil is real and causing a lot of disruption in the world, in the Church and in our hearts. He is causing disruption in the world: we just have to open our eyes and we see evil around us that at one time would never enter our minds. Just think of the abortion debate going on in our country at present, where now some argue a baby can even be killed outside the mother’s womb! I recently read an article about a young man who was thrown out of school in Australia because he insisted he could say “man” and “woman” because there is a real gender distinction! Fr. Jacques Harmel, an old French priest had his throat slit while celebrating Mass for no other reason than that he was a Catholic priest! Our moral compass is so off that often what is wrong in considered OK and what is right is considered intolerable! Satan is at work in our world! He is causing havoc in the Church. When we reflect on the crisis the Church we love is going through, it is clear that the power of evil is working against the church from without and from within! It seems there can be no other explanation to what we see happening except that Satan has truly entered into the hearts and souls of some of our Bishops and priests. The force of this evil and sin leaves us bewildered! The devil is at work in the Church— he will never overcome her, but he is working. Finally, we ourselves are in a true spiritual combat for our own souls. Everyone of us knows and experiences that living in a world which each day fights to distance itself more and more from God, it seems at times we are in a daily battle to hold on to our souls. We need to battle to practice our faith. We need to battle to practice our morals. We need to battle to keep God and His teachings in the public square. And, although we know the end of the story and the victory of Jesus, at times, it can seem like we are loosing the battle! Each one of us is in spiritual combat for his salvation! Pope Leo XIII wrote the Prayer to St. Michael begging for protection from demons he saw in his vision. I have no sure idea what he saw in that vision, but I do know we are in spiritual combat against the devil and his minions and we need to fight. Our daily prayer to St. Michael is one of our strongest defenses in this battle! My hope is that each of us comes to know the prayer to St. Michael by heart and will recite it each day, that we might have his protection and help to cast the devil out of this world, our Church and our hearts! El otro día recibimos una llamada en la oficina de alguien preguntando si nosotros en la parroquia recitamos la Oración a San Miguel Arcángel todos los días después de todas las Misas. La persona que llamó se alegró de escuchar que recitamos la oración todos los días, durante todo el año. Pensé que sería bueno compartir algunos pensamientos acerca de esta oración simple pero poderosa. Para aquellos de nosotros que tenemos más de 39 años y podemos recordar la Misa antes de los cambios del Concilio, recordamos que al final de cada misa nos arrodillamos y rezamos lo que se llamaban las "Oraciones Leoninas". En 1884, el Papa Leo XIII les pidió que se dijera en respuesta a la situación política entre Italia y la Iglesia en ese momento. Sin embargo, la oración a San Miguel no fue incluida; esta oración fue añadida en 1886. ¿Por qué? Se dice que un día, mientras celebraba la misa, el Papa Leo tuvo una visión del diablo afirmando un terrible poder sobre la Iglesia. Hace poco leí un artículo sobre un joven que fue expulsado de la escuela en Australia porque insistió en que podía decir "hombre" y "mujer" porque hay una verdadera distinción de género! El P. Jacques Harmel, un viejo sacerdote francés le cortarían la garganta mientras celebraba la misa sin otra razón que por eso era un sacerdote católico! Nuestra brújula moral está tan mal que a menudo lo que está mal en considerado BIEN y lo que está bien se considera intolerable! ¡Satanás está trabajando en nuestro mundo! Está causando estragos en la Iglesia. Cuando reflexionamos sobre la crisis que esta atravesando la Iglesia que amamos, está claro que el poder del mal está trabajando contra la iglesia desde fuera y desde dentro! Parece que no puede haber otra explicación a lo que vemos, excepto que Satanás ha entrado verdaderamente en los corazones y almas de algunos de sus obispos y sacerdotes. La fuerza de este mal y pecado nos deja desconcertados! El diablo está trabajando en la Iglesia— nunca la vencerá, pero está trabajando. Finalmente, nosotros mismos estamos en un verdadero combate espiritual por nuestras propias almas. Tenemos que luchar para practicar nuestra fe. Tenemos que luchar para practicar nuestra moral. Tenemos que luchar para mantener a Dios y Sus enseñanzas en la plaza pública. Y, aunque sabemos el final de la historia y la victoria de Jesús, a veces, puede parecer que estamos perdiendo la batalla! ¡Cada uno de nosotros está en un combate espiritual por su salvación! El Papa Leo XIII escribió la Oración a San Miguel pidiendo protección contra los demonios que vio en su visión. No tengo ni idea de lo que vio en esa visión, pero sé que estamos en un combate espiritual contra el diablo y sus secuaces y tenemos que luchar. Nuestra oración diaria a San Miguel es una de nuestras defensas más fuertes en esta batalla! Mi esperanza es que cada uno de nosotros conozca la oración a San Miguel de memoria y la recite cada día, para que podamos tener su protección y ayuda para echar al diablo fuera de este mundo, nuestra Iglesia y nuestros corazones! ¡San Miguel Ora por nosotros! ¡Que Dios te bendiga!

Dias atrás nos recebemos uma chamada no escritório de uma pessoas que perguntava se rezávamos a oração de São Miguel todos os dias após as missas. A pessoa estava admirada por rezarmos essa oração diariamente e sempre. Eu gostaria de partilhar umas ideias sobre essa oração tão poderosa. Aqueles dentre nos que tem mais de 39 anos de idade devem se lembrar de como era a missa antes do Concilio Vaticano II, após cada missa nos ajoelhávamos e rezávamos a “Oração Leonina”. Em 1884 o papa Leão XIII instituiu essa oração como resposta a situação política entre a Itália e a Igreja daquele tempo. Até então, a oração de São Miguel não estava concluída, pois ela foi concluída em 1886. Por quê? Uma vez enquanto o Papa Leão XIII celebrava a missa ele teve uma visão do demônio fazendo uma grande pressão sobre a Igreja. Ele ficou chocado com o que viu e compôs a Oração de São Miguel pedindo protecao para a Igreja contra as forças do mal. Hoje há uma tendência a “minimizar” o demônio e o poder que ele tem de influenciar as pessoas para fazer o mal. Ele muitas vezes e apresentado como um conto de fadas que visa a assustar as pessoas. Ela fez de tudo para que as pessoas pensem que ele não existe. Não vamos cair nessa cilada! Na verdade, o demônio existe e causa um grande mal no mundo, na Igreja e em nossas vidas. Ele está provocando grandes transtornos no mundo. Precisamos abrir os nossos olhos para perceber e fugir do mal que está ao nosso redor. Vejam só como o aborto virou algo tão normal em nosso país, e tem gente fazendo pressão para que as mães tenham o direito de matar os seus bebês mesmo depois de nascidos, se elas assim quiserem. Recentemente eu li um artigo sobre um jovem que foi expulso da escola na Austrália porque ele insistiu que tinha o direito de dizer homem e “homem” e mulher, “mulher”, sem aceitar um “coluna do meio”. O francês padre Jacques Harmel teve a sua cabeça cortada enquanto celebrava a missa, apenas porque ele era padre católico. O critério moral hoje em dia está tão deturpado que muitas vezes inverte: o errado e visto como certo e o certo e visto como errado. O demônio está trabalhando no mundo. Ele está causando um estrago na Igreja. Basta ver o que está acontecendo com a Igreja que Jesus fundou e que tanto a amamos. Está evidente o mal que o demônio está causando na igreja ao entrar no coração de alguns bispos e padres e se servir deles para envergonhar e escandalizar a Igreja. O mal causado pelo pecado desorienta as pessoas. O demônio nunca vai derrotar a Igreja de Cristo, mas vai continuar sempre a sua luta contra ela. Finalmente, todos nos enfrentemos um combate espiritual. Não e fácil viver nesse mundo que está cada vez mais se afastando de Deus, não está fácil seguir os caminhos traçados por Deus. Temos que batalhar para manter a nossa fe e praticar os valores morais e anunciar publicamente os ensinamentos divinos. Todos nós enfrentamos uma luta pela nossa salvação. As vezes parece que estamos perdendo, mas com Jesus ao nosso lado, nos nunca seremos derrotados. O papa Leão XIII compôs a oração de São Miguel para nos proteger no combate contra as forças do mal. Eu gostaria que todos decorassem a oração de São Miguel para rezá-la diariamente, para conseguirmos a graça de vencer as maldades que estão no mundo, na Igreja e nos nossos corações. Que Deus te abençoe!

Któregoś dnia odebrałem telefon w biurze parafialnym od kogoś, kto pytał, czy w parafii odmawiamy Modlitwę do św. Michała Archanioła każdego dnia po wszystkich Mszach. Osoba, która zadzwoniła, była zadowolona słysząc, że codziennie odmawiamy modlitwę przez cały rok. Pomyślałem, że dobrze byłoby podzielić się pewnymi myśleniami na temat tej prostej, ale potężnej modlitwy. Dla tych, którzy mają ponad 39 lat i pamiętają Mszę przed zmianami Sobory Vatykanskieg, również pamiętają, że pod koniec każdej Mszy klękaliśmy i modliliśmy się, co nazywano „Modlitwami Leona XIII”. Ks. Jacques Harmel, francuski kapłan, został zamordowany podczas celebracji Mszy św., nie z innego powodu, ale tylko dlatego, że był katolickim księdzem! Nasz moralny kompas wydaje sie być wyłączony, i dlatego często to, co jest niewłaściwe jest OK, a co jest właściwe, jest uważane za nie do przyjecia! Szatan działa w naszym świecie! Powoduje spustoszenie w Kościele. Kiedy zastanawiamy się nad kryzysem, przez który przechodzi Kościół, jasne jest, że moc zła działa przeciwko Kościołowi z zewnątrz i z wewnątrz! I chociaż znamy koniec historii i zwycięstwo Jezusa, czasami może się wydawać, że przegrywamy bitwę! Każdy z nas jest w duchowej walce o swoje zbawienie! Papież Leon XIII napisał Modlitwę do św. Michała Archanioła błagając o ochronę przed demonami, które widział w swojej wizji. Nie mam pojęcia, co widział w tej wizji, ale wiem, że jesteśmy w duchowej walce z diabłem i jego sługami i musimy walczyć. Nasza codzienna modlitwa do św. Michała Archanioła jest jedną z naszych najsilniejszych broni w tej bitwie! Mam nadzieję, że każdy nauczy sie na pamięć tę modlitwę i będzie recytować ja każdego dnia, abyśmy mogli mieć jego ochronę i pomóc aby wyrzucić diabła z tego świata, z naszego Kościoła i z naszych serc! Religious Education/Educación Religiosa In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches that the most important commandment is to love God and love your neighbor. To help us understand how to follow this great commandment Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan. This story teaches us how to be a good neighbor and how to care for others. God wants us to help all people. The story of the Good Samaritan shows that it is not always easy to stop and help someone. When we take the time to care for others we show our love for God and neighbor. Reflection for the week: How can you help people feel welcome at your school? How can you help people feel welcome in your home? Let us pray. O God, you speak to us in so many ways. Help us listen to your Word with open hearts. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
