REFLECTIONS ON LIFE THE GRASS IS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE “Don’t let the green grass fool you! Don’t let it change your mind!” Wilson Pickett’s 1971 classic rendition of this song tells how we tend to see things rosier – greener, in this case – on the other side of the fence. But lo! The grass does appear greener on the other side of the fence, because we view our own grass from the top from which we see less of the blades. However, we see our neighbor’s grass from the side where we see the flat sides of the blades that appear denser. Whatever be the case, after the rainiest spring in many years in north Texas, the grass, shrubs and trees are greener than one could imagine. This phenomenon of intensely green grass fits perfectly the daily observation of Larry Martinez,“Thank God for another day, because I am still on top of the grass!” God finally convinced Larry that the grass is greener on the other side with an invitation calling Larry home to everlasting greener pastures Pentecost Sunday morning at 10:05. “He chose that time,” said Larry’s eldest daughter, “because it was time for the 10:00 o’clock Mass to begin at Our Mother Of Mercy Church.” That daughter, Elsa , had arrived at Larry’s side at 9:00 o’clock and had cued up Marcos Yaroide’s Spanish hymn, “Que se abran los cielos,” “Let the heavens be opened!” Then in a terminal coma, Larry’s hearing was the only remaining mode of communication. That hymn created a fitting atmosphere for his transit home.

An Ohio native, Larry was in Fort Worth on a 1955 army assignment when he met Olga Najera, who quickly became the sunshine of his life, a role that lasted through 60 years of marriage. Fruits of that marriage were Elsa, the oldest, Larry, who died at the premature age of 45, Valerie and Lanette, the youngest. Olga and Larry never recovered from the deep pain of Larry’s death. They adopted Ashley. After his stint in the army and Korea, Larry worked several jobs, but his heart was always in playing and singing at birthday parties, quinceañeras, weddings, funerals and Masses in various churches. When a church called him, he answered with gusto, starting choirs and teaching such notables as Jose Garcia who went on to establish his own famed band and choir, and to teach Gospel seminars far and wide. Long before getting to know Larry close and up front, I saw him and heard his inspiring music and singing at various celebrations such as quinceañeras, and at the farewell prayers in cemeteries. He was nearing the end of his playing and singing days when he discovered Our Mother Of Mercy Church. “I will attend Mass here whenever I have no playing and singing obligation elsewhere,”he promised us. True to his word, Larry came by often for our 10:00 a.m. Gospel/Jazz Mass, blending his guitar beautifully with Zenobia Collins at the piano and at times Don Walker, Jr. on the saxophone (either of three types) and Floyd Ware on the drums. Mesmerized by his rendering of “One Day At a Time,” I requested it as frequently as I dared to without alienating some of the folks smitten by the

time bug. Larry would first sing “Un Dia a la Vez,” then he would sing it in English, “One Day At a Time.” At the end of the announcements after Communion, when we saluted those celebrating a birthday or anniversary, first we sang the conventional Happy Birthday song, then Larry played his own jazzed-up version that got everybody clapping and stomping. Serving one and all at a moment’s notice, Larry would come running if his services were needed for a quinceañera, a wedding or a funeral. Larry had a fascinating repertoire of sayings like, “No talkie, no tellie, no catchie hellie!” His favorite saying was, “Salud, dinero, amor!” Or, “Health, money, love!” Between the two of us, we decided to amplify the saying into, “Salud, dinero, amor, la gracia de Dios y el tiempo para gozarlos!” Or, “Health, money, love, the grace of God and the time to enjoy them!” We often said this to one another. Having indulged smoking as his one vice over the years, Larry at length had to pay a heavy price for it, becoming oxygen-dependent from ephysema. Even after one has stopped smoking, the dread pulmonary disease persists. Without complaint or bouts of sadness, Larry bore up valiantly under the heavy ordeal, retaining his sense of humor, ever talking about great life experiences and family celebrations. Surrounded lovingly by his family toward the end, Larry was buoyed by the rosary and other prayers. Cutting in and out of comas, “like Lazarus,” his family said, Larry finally answered God’s call as we began to celebrate the flames of Pentecost.

“God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD
