REFLECTIONS ON LIFE TEENAGERS TEACH TEENS AND SOMETIMES ADULTS Sporting a 70 mph fastball – the equivalent of a Major League 93 – Mo’ne Kea Davis was one of two girls who played in the 2014 Little League World Series. With a shutout, she is the first girl to earn a win in Little League World Series history. She is the 18th girl, the first AfricanAmerican girl to play, the sixth girl to get a hit and the first to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a Little League player. Sports Illustrated Kids named her Sports Kid Of The Year for 2014. “She’s the most talked-about baseball player on earth right now,” says Mark Hyman, assistant professor of sports management at George Washington University, in the April 29, 2014 New York Times. October features were: Time Magazine named her one of “The 25 most influential teens of 2014;” a 16-minute documentary about Davis, titled “I Throw Like A Girl,” directed by Spike Lee and produced by Spike DDB for Chevrolet, was released; Mo’ne threw out the ceremonial first pitch of game 4 of the MLB World Series at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Accompanied by teammates from the Anderson Monarchs in September 2014, Davis donated her jersey to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mamie Johnson, one of the three women to play in Negro League Baseball, was present at the event. All this was too much for Bloomsbury University baseball player Joey Casselberry, especially with the additional news that the Disney Channel

would produce a film based on Davis’ life. He tweeted, “WHAT A JOKE. That slut got rocked by Nevada.” The university immediately suspended him from future play. After Casselberry had made a public apology, Davis initiated a plea to the school, requesting that the player be reinstated. Bloomsbury University responded with the statement: "Her request demonstrates the type of person she is, her level of maturity and the empathy that her family and coach teach her. Bloomsburg University stands firm on our decision; however, his consequences will be reviewed as is common in disciplinary actions like this." First of all, Casselberry should have known better than to complain that Mo’ne had gotten shelled by Nevada. Even the best pitchers of all time got bombed at one time or another. At times near unhittable, Hall Of Famer Sandy Koufax threw a no -hitter against the Giants May 11, 1963, but he got shellacked by the Giants the next time he faced them. Even the best pitchers of all time had poor outings and at times terrible days on the mound with a fastball, curve or changeup not working. Rather than give a levelheaded assessment of Mo’ne Davis, Casselberry betrayed jealousy of his own abilities and envy of whatever Mo’ne displayed in her pitching exploits. In so doing, he demonstrated the poisonous evil twins, jealousy and envy, that eat away at the character and personality of so many insecure adults. Unfortunately for himself, Casselberry played his badly flawed hand of those evil twins of jealousy and envy and their underlying quicksand of insecurity and weakness. Rather

than coming off as a sterling athlete and a welcoming, generous human being, he came off as weak, selfish and trifling in playing his hand. As so many folks, he patently just cannot stand seeing someone else get credit and praise. On the other hand, Mo’ne proved convincingly that there are real, live young people – including teenagers – who are mature, thoughtful and forgiving far beyond their years and, sadly, far beyond the years of many adults. Far from destroying the stellar role model template of Mo’ne Davis, Casselberry only confirmed it to the full. Although it is true that teenagers and even young adults have much to learn before they ascend the lofty heights of wisdom, the young nevertheless often have words of wisdom and shining examples that we need heed. Her parents, relatives, extended family in church, teachers and school counselors – all those and whatever it took to form the village – did one marvelous job in forming Mo’ne’s character. It is strongly reminiscent of Isaiah 11:6 where the great prophet extols the Little Child sprung from the root of Jesse, inspired by the spirit of the Lord, bringing together and leading old, implacable foes such as the wolf and the lamb. In his adult years, that same Little Child instructed us in Matthew 18:3, “Truly, I tell you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Joey Casselberry needs to revisit that nugget of Scripture. So do the numerous adults who play Russian roulette with their dearest relationships by clinging to insane jealousy and envy, the twin evil destroyers of everything

good. “God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD
