REFLECTIONS ON LIFE WHO IS PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN MUSLIM? While fleeing to Syria to join ISIS and become Jihadi brides, three American teenage girls from Denver were arrested in Germany by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) October 22, 2014. About that same time, three other girls from Minnesota managed to flee from Minnesota and on to Syria for the same purpose. Straight-A students Shamina Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and a third unnamed 15-yearold girl left their affluent home in East London February 17, 2015 with the same idea. They followed at least 5 others – all from the Bethnal Green Academy in London – including 16-year-old twins Salma and Zahra Halane from Manchester, Yusra Hussien, 15, from Bristol, and Samya Dirie, 17, from London. Cold-bloodedly, 19-year-old Aqsa Mahmood left her home in an affluent neighborhood in Scotland headed for Turkey in November 2013. After hugging her father warmly, she told him, “Khuda Hafiz,” meaning, “May God be your guardian.” During a phone call from Aqsa in Turkey, her mother pleaded, “In the name of Allah, please come home!” Aqsa’s callous snub makes us hurt for her dear Muslim parents. Now using twitter to radicalize and lure teen girls to become Jihadi brides, Aqsa has turned up often on social media, exalting the terrorist group's ideology and calling for attacks against the West. She has posted photos of AK-47s and executions carried out by ISIS fighters. In these girls’ minds, is
the new macho man a total beast of the ISIS ilk? Is this the ultimate cult brainwashing? Can it be deprogrammed? The teens are promised online that they will no longer be girls, will quickly come of age as women, and they “will belong.” They are promised free rent and gifts of many household items. Some literally fall in love online. But harsh reality turns out to be very different with rape, abuse and confinement, even being warned to prepare to be widows when their man attains Shahadah (martyrdom). Ominously, one in six ISIS recruits is a female and is most efficiently drawn by female recruiters. An official said that ISIS has broadened their recruitment of Westerners on social media to include “young, impressionable girls “who are easy to lure into the lion’s den. “Secondly, they have romantic fantasies about getting married and ISIS is known for marrying off their females.” Social media is a shrewd, effective tool. “It is an extremely dangerous place and we have seen reports of what life is like for them and how restricted their lives become,” the official continued. “It is not uncommon for girls or women to be prevented from being allowed out of their houses or, if allowed out, only when accompanied by a guardian.” Now how do you figure it? What about those straight-A girls who obviously had no sense of street smarts nor any allotment of common sense? How can they possibly view joining bloodthirsty, beastly savages of ISIS as anything but leaping into a gynophobic, stench-filled, putrid morass of homicidal psychopaths? How can they ignore their
brokenhearted parents weeping painfully in public interviews? Why did security agents not challenge the girls at the airport? Are agents and guardians ignoring red flags of danger? Worse, is ISIS besting us in the unrelenting battle for teen minds and souls? As in the romantic old days of the Foreign Legion, the mercenary soldiers of Xenophon and virtually all armies of yore, there is still a huge military attraction for disaffected young males hopped up on testosterone. A very similar attraction is found in the mind-boggling number of 33,000 U.S. gangs documented by the FBI. Is the greatest rush for some boys to leave public or private schools for the killing fields of ISIS? Is ISIS becoming the Major League of gangs? God forbid! It is intriguing to speculate whether our U.S. gangs would fight ISIS. Who, then, is proud to be an American Muslim, an English Muslim, a French Muslim, an Australian Muslim or a Muslim of any nationality? Where is your fealty? Called “Cubs of the Caliphate,” small boys in arms training for battle is an ugly sight that we actually witness on TV. Still, it is encouraging to read that some Imams like Mohamed Magid are going out of their way to intervene at mosques and Muslim centers, persuading boys not to join ISIS, while online recruiters hound them day and night. “He has daddy problems,” the Imam says of one yo-yoing boy. The Nation Of Islam (Black Muslims) have always been very intense in their zeal to keep the black family nuclear and strong. All of us must join all Imams as parents, guardians, shepherds, teachers, counselors, public officials, police and all pillars of the community. It definitely takes all our village to rear a child properly.
