REFLECTIONS ON LIFE BERT LIVED AT THE LEVEL OF LEGENDS AND ICONS Entering into a yearlong engagement, Johnnie told Bert, “If you meet anyone or if anything happens to change this – even on the last day – call it off!” Evidently, Bert had heard this only too well. When Johnnie did not show up at the altar for half an hour, Bert sweated profusely, muttering, “Another 10 minutes and I’m out of here!” Finally, Johnnie A. Wilhite did make it after an unintended delay, enabling Bert to exhale. Despite that clumsy, inauspicious beginning, the lovebirds went on to celebrate 52 blessed years of wedded life. “For a 6-foot-7-inch tall, 300pound man with a deep, resonant voice, Bert never raised his voice to me,” Johnnie observed, “and he never disagreed with me. He would just say, ‘I’ll help you do it.’” Born in Riverside, California on July 9, 1933, Frank Bertrand Staton moved with his family to Fort Worth when he was a child. He soon joined Our Mother Of Mercy Church where he took roots and blossomed as an active, faithful member, also embracing the Knights of Peter Claver and all their altruistic activities, of which an annual scholarship in his honor has been in place for a number of years. Bert was a natural fit in the supernatural atmosphere of the Faith Community of Our Mother of Mercy Church. It was quite right and just having him here as part of our family, comfortable in his skin and comfortable with all his extended family. That

extraordinary relationship lasted from his youngest days until his last. Starring in basketball, Bert graduated from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. Imagine the rapt attention of the students in Terrell, Texas where the gentle giant Bert began his teaching career, continuing for two years, coordinating the football, basketball and track athletic programs. The best thing that happened to him there was meeting his soul mate Johnnie, leading to marriage and their daughter Glenda. Bigger things awaited Bert in the Fort Worth Independent School District where he was a teacher and educational leader for 45 years. He worked closely with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program and the Improvement of Discipline and Learning Environment (I.D.L.E) program. He was also active in developing various workshops and learning retreats for classroom teachers. After Johnnie, children occupied great swaths of his time, energy and multiple talents. The close bonds meticulously developed over the many years of his toils in the classrooms, in the arenas and on the playing fields have lasted a lifetime for those who were graced with Bert as teacher, mentor, coach, counselor and friend. Evidence of this was voiced in everyday random conversations and remarks. As Bert journeyed through his seventies, arthritis – no doubt hastened by the grind of his athlete days – began to slow him down and eventually debilitate him. All this was aggravated by a deteriorated heart condition capped by hardening arteries. First he became cane-dependent and

not long after he was wheelchairbound. But none of these things slowed his mischievous penchant for teasing and dragging for his friends, especially the dainty ladies. At first parked in the last seat and later in his wheelchair in back, Bert waylaid anyone who entered the church on his side. After Mass, he harried all passersby as Tom Byrd rolled him to the truck. A May 2007 Sunday Mass witnessed the most enduring image of Bert Staton, flanked by the rest of the Back Seat Boys Choir, rolling up the middle aisle in his wheelchair, singing, “If we ever needed the Lord before, we sure do need him now!” Rolling all the way up to the choir section, they gave a hair-raising rendition. Even after a long stint in the Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Ridgmar Facility, it was strange to hear that Bert had gone home to God. He was like old soldiers who never die but just fade away. And Christian soldier he was to the very end, not walking but running his race without slacking or tiring. And now the crown of righteousness in 2 Timothy 4:8 is laid up for him in our Father’s kingdom. Bert’s wake was full of his former students and longtime friends who gave very serious and more hilarious testimonials of his teaching, coaching, counseling and mentoring days as well as the loyalty and endearing ways of his manifold lifetime friendships. There was a palpable feeling that we had lost someone special. If anyone lived Jesus’ John 10:10 “Life to the full,” Bert did with soul mate Johnnie there to attest to it. It is exactly how the folks whom he touched remember him, not leaving anything unexpended on

the playing field, while keeping the home fires burning with his family, his church extended family and all the community. "God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them." (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD

Nosotros podemos ayudarle.
