REFLECTIONS ON LIFE ARE YOU FINETUNING YOUR PIECE OF HEAVEN? Despite all its fabulous fauna and flora around the globe, and in spite of the many splendors and pleasures of life itself, we know that this world is not heaven by any stretch of the imagination. However, there are some people in our life who are a bit of heaven, a foretaste of the glory and joy of our eternal life to come. These are the people who fit the dictum, “Some people give joy wherever they go.” Make sure that you so conduct your thoughts, words and actions that you belong to this group. These are the precious people who give wings to the mystical observation of Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him, this God has revealed to us through the Spirit.” If the good people around us are so reflective of the incredible life to come, just how unimaginably wonderful is that life itself! A frequent quip on our bit of paradise here is, “All this and heaven too?” But beware of those other folks who fit the witticism, “Some people give joy whenever they go.” Take all the pains necessary to avoid the thoughts, words and actions that will make you a part of this group. There is nothing desirable about being part and parcel of this group. Sadly, this group is composed of people who are not a bit of heaven, but rather a bit of purgatory if not a bit of hell on earth.

So what must you do to avoid membership in the undesirable group and to secure membership in the good group? You must first begin by identifying all the negative things that can sabotage and destroy the good latent in your thoughts, your words and your actions. After identifying all the negatives, follow the song, “You’ve got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative.” Negativism is primarily an attitude, a mindset that has been planted, then watered, germinated and nourished in a person over time, so that it is ingrained as part of the personality and personal culture of an individual. This is so pervasive and so close that we say there is an air of negativism hanging around the person. It is a palpable, observable thing, discouraging and depressing to those nearby. This is surely the vestibule opening to a taste of purgatory or hell on earth. Positivism is likewise primarily an attitude that has been planted, watered, germinated and nourished in a person over time, so that it is ingrained as part of the personality and personal culture of an individual. This, too, is an air hanging around a person, stimulating encouragement, daring, initiative, pep in one’s step, a general feeling of wellbeing, and a winning smile with words and actions to match. “Bless you for being an angel just when it seemed that heaven was not for me.” That gem of a love song expresses the expectant hope of certainly most people that the alluring but dicey path of romantic love will lead them to their desired portion of paradise here on earth. At times we are beset by the melancholy thought that life has passed us by without

allowing us to achieve meaningfulness and love. What and where is your piece of heaven? Ideally, your piece of heaven should be situated mainly in your family setting. Does it coincide with the American Dream, with the African Dream, with the European Dream, with the Middle East Dream, with the Asian Dream? Where is your citizenship? Indeed, you have a certificate of birth or other documents to prove legally that you are the citizen of a country. If you are a normal person, you proudly profess allegiance to your country. Numerous folks go a step further, grasping their fancied citizenship on earth as if it were the best and only thing they will ever possess. Some even go so far as to provoke Paul’s reprimand in Philippians 3:18-20, “Many, as I have told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their god is their stomach; their glory is in their shame. “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” Paul goes on to say. Before Paul, Jesus let us know in Matthew 21:33 that we are tenant farmers who do not have the radical ownership of anything, but rather must so work and use what is at our temporary disposal as to fulfill the work of temporal recompense in the city of man and eternal reward in the city of God. In a similar vein, Luke 16 admonishes us to be shrewd but honest managers of what God has given us in life, and to be at least as prudent in our role as the children of light as worldly children are in their material pursuits, ever mindful that “No servant can serve two masters” and “You cannot serve God and mammon.” “God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD
