REFLECTIONS ON LIFE AND IT WAS REJOICING SUNDAY – AGAIN! Pope Francis is at it again. Exactly two years after being elected Pope, the Pontiff said that he expects to have a short papacy, perhaps of 4 or 5 years. Clearly, he is not on a power trip when he speaks of his universal sway over the 1.1 billion Catholics around the world in terms of just of few years, feeling like a gambler who convinces himself that he will lose, and therefore won’t be disappointed if he does. Of course, if he wins, he will be happy because it is all gravy and bonus. What kind of Pontiff talks like that? This sounds like a conversation you and I would have. Asked if he liked being Pope, Francis said that he doesn’t mind, but that he also would like some degree of anonymity. “The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being recognized, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza." “He doesn’t mind?” This Pope seems to become more human by the day. And what about reminiscing that what he misses most of all is being able to steal off and buy himself a pizza without anyone recognizing him or lifting an eyebrow? Frankly, this is someone I could hang out with anytime, just observing and listening to him. Being a vegan does not mean that I do not like to find and enjoy a vegan pizza. I don’t even mind having a partner in crime. Actually, far from being a crime, feasting on a vegan pizza can be a healthy thing, especially when combined with a healthy salad and a good
mess of beans thrown into the equation. Now isn’t this the kind of chatter that Rejoicing Sunday is all about? Good company and good chatter is one of the finest mixes in the whole world. And to think that the good intention turns all these actions into components of holiness! Rejoicing comes in many forms. For instance, local Texan, Roy Serpa, emailed me a video of two tap dancing priests who did their routine in Rome at a gathering at North American Seminary. The word rejoicing sells the performance of the priests short as first one, then the other, then both went through their hilarious but skillful routines. All who have seen it enjoyed it thoroughly. http:// www.cruxnow.com Lo and behold, Roy sent another email video of Irish priest, Ray Kelly, singing his way through the narrative of a wedding at which he was officiating. This, too, is a must-see/must-hear celebration for tying the knot. The Priest at This Wedding All this is reminiscent of 2 Samuel 6:14 when King David danced before the Ark Of God, “Then David came dancing before the Lord with abandon, girt with a linen ephod.” To this day, sacred eurhythmic dancing is a vibrant part of worship. There was joy to report in recent days. Having scooped up a 22-month-old toddler in tiny Sprague, Washington, a 15year-old was chased down and forced to drop the child by 15year-old Andrew Crain and 16year-old Isaac Yow. Yes, there is hope among our youngsters and peer example to be followed by their fellow teens. Not allowing her down syndrome to get in the way, Desiree Andrews became one of the cheer leaders of the
basketball team in Lincoln High School of Kenosha, Wisconsin. When a bully began to make fun of her during a game, three members of the team left the court and confronted the bully. The team renamed Lincoln Gym D’s House and began every game by running to D with high fives and fist pumps. After striking a concrete barrier on a bridge, the car of 25-year-old Lynn Groesbeck shot into an icy river in Spanish Fork, Utah, landing upside down. Killed instantly, Lynn hung for 12 hours from her seat belt, as did Lily, her 18-month-old daughter, unseen because the concrete barrier screened them out. Finally, alerted by a fisherman, four police officers approached the car and were profoundly shaken to hear a woman’s voice cry, “Help!” Incredibly, little Lily is doing well. Still baffled, the policemen fear to admit reality. “All night, all day, the angels keep awatching!” To dance, to sing, to rejoice is not to ignore our sufferings, problems, failures and disappointments, let alone our illnesses and eventually terminal illnesses and death. To rejoice is not to live in denial. Rather, to rejoice in the Lord is to claim and acknowledge that Isaiah 53:11-12 ultimately refers to Jesus the Messiah as God’s Suffering Servant who will redeem and save the whole world through his sufferings, death and resurrection that cause our spiritual debts to be stamped PIF –paid in full! Do we have a lot to moan and cry about? We certainly do. However, we can laugh instead of cry or complain. Through our troubles, hardships, deprivations, trials, mental/emotional pain or abuse, being betrayed, being neglected, being cursed and threatened – through it all – we
have a Savior to bring us to victory. “God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them.” (1 John 4:16) Rev. Jerome G. LeDoux, SVD
