REFLECTIONS ON LIFE THE MANY PROFILES OF A MOTHER Walking out to Mondawmin Mall to find her son, Toya Graham spotted a boy with a mask and hoodie, holding a rock in his hand, engaged on the violent side of the Freddie Gray demonstrators in Baltimore. When Michael Singleton heard, “Put that brick down!” he recognized his mother’s voice and immediately complied. “You weren’t brought up like this!” preceded an embarrassing series of slaps to the face as she pursued her son, at times pushing him off the street away from the chaos. Oprah Winfrey gave Toya a call. Captured by CNN, the galvanizing incident went viral. Asked by Anderson Cooper whether she was embarrassing her son, Toya answered, “By no means! He was actually embarrassing himself by wearing that mask and that hoodie and doing what he was doing. I told him if he was bold enough to do this, then show your face. Why are you hiding behind the mask?” “I grew up in a predominantly white community,” Anderson continued, “and I always thought the police were there to protect me. But you talk to people who live here and that’s a laughable idea.” “No, not to protect!” Toya answered. “My daughter is trying to become a police officer. I applaud her. I know she can make a difference.” “Do you worry about your son?” “Yes, I worry about my son every time he walks out that door. With the life we live, I never know that he will return. As long as I have breath in my body, I will always do right by

He did learn a lesson from his mother’s tough love and told Anderson that he appreciated it. “You saw in one scene you had a mother who grabbed her child who had a hood on his head. I wish I had more parents to take care of their children,” said Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts. “Mother of the year!” some began to remark. “Send in the moms!” some newspaper headlines ran. Like her situation or not, one has to admit that Toya Graham’s is one powerful profile of a mother. Some naysayers groused that Toya Graham is tainted in that she is a single mother with 5 girls and one boy from various fathers. Well-spoken, vibrant and attractive, she was tempting bait to the hood lechers who shun serious commitment but sought her sexual favors just long enough to leave her with another pregnancy. So what does a woman like her do when no man in the hood merry-goround wants to be responsible, settle down, marry the love of his choice and be a good father? Damaged goods or not, I’ll take a mother like Toya any day

when it comes to being true to the children and practicing tough love. At this time of honoring our mothers on Mother’s Day, perhaps the whole world would want our mothers to be as pure as the driven snow. However, there are many single mothers who steal the show by standing tall and being all they can be as loving, caring mothers. In a somewhat convoluted way, they display strong human love and God’s love too. Feverishly searching for root causes of the undesirable plight of blacks in the hood, civil authorities keep looking in the wrong directions. Throwing good money after bad in efforts to improve schools, create jobs and erase poverty, governments at all levels have flooded Baltimore schools to the tune of a whopping $17,196 per student annually. That is mostly wasted by bad teachers shielded by unions, lack of discipline in the classrooms, and general incompetence inherent in bureaucracies. The protestors’ call for increased investment in urban America is nullified by Baltimore’s wasting of a HUD $24.6 million in 1998, and federal/state money that paid 40 percent of its budget in 2001. The utter failure nationwide of $22 trillion spent on anti-poverty programs over the last 50 years, with the missing man clause that verified the absence of a man for a woman to claim aid destroyed the family. In an indirect way, Toya Graham showed them the right direction and the root cause: the nuclear black family reduced to 30 percent, down from the dizzying heights of over 86 percent from 1860 to 1964 when the War On Poverty sabotaged the black nuclear family. We need to work with folks like sharp Toya Graham.

Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives.Copyright © J.
