New Cathedral School Principal ± In collaboration with our Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mike Fedewa and our Diocesan Director of Human Resources, Gary Rosia, and our interview team members, Christine Bost, Holly Greeves, Ted Mooney, Dawn Neuman and Tim Nichols, who is serving as the Chair for the Committee, I am pleased to announce that Peggy Lane will begin serving as our new Cathedral School Principal, beginning August 1, 2019. Mrs. Lane has been serving as the VicePrincipal at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic School in Cary and has previously served as the Principal at Saint Egbert Catholic School in Morehead City, prior to her family moving to the Raleigh area. She brings a great deal of administrative school leadership, as well as practical classroom experience and was the unanimous choice of the search committee to assist us in this important mission of our parish. She is also a native North Carolinian, having grown up as a Catholic in Henderson, NC. Kindly keep Mrs. Lane among your intentions. My renewed gratitude to the search committee members and to Dr. Mike Fedewa for their careful guidance and assistance in this process.
Opening of Our Cathedral Gift Shop ± A year in the making, as of this writing, I am pleased to announce the opening of our new Cathedral Gift Shop this Sunday, June 28, 2019. The hours for the shop this Sunday will be 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. My great gratitude to the leadership and generosity of Trish Kesler, who will serve as manager for the shop, and to Marguerite Ambrozevitch, owner of In His Name Catholic Bookstore in Raleigh. Both have worked tirelessly to assemble the wide variety of religious goods that will be regularly inventoried in the shop. My gratitude to Russ Elmayan, our Diocesan CFO and to Christine Passaretti Norwood, a Cathedral parishioner and also of our Diocesan staff, Kevin Hemphill, also of our Diocesan IT staff; as well as Barbara Dear and Michelle Connors from our parish staff, for their kind assistance in developing the inventory systems, accounting processes and IT support necessary to insure smooth operations in our shop.
When the shop gets up to full speed, it will be open using these same Sunday hours, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, plus 10:00 am ± 2:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Note that these weekday hours are tentative in these initial days of the shop, as we work through any unforeseen challenges. I will be sure to inform you when we begin our regular weekday hours.
Note that items in the shop will be unique to our shop, many specifically depicting the particular saints, whose images are in Cathedral, and the stainedglass windows, which we are blessed to have as sacred art in our Cathedral. Other items will also feature our Cathedral logo, found on our Cathedral cornerstone, which you may recall, was blessed by Pope Francis on December 9, 2015. Other items will be forthcoming as we fill out the shop and those items which we will make available in English and in Spanish for the prayer, devotion and commemorative use of the faithful, whether our parishioners or those making pilgrimage to the heart of the Church at our Cathedral, here in eastern North Carolina. Parish Council Transition and Gratitude ± With a transition of Marjorie SackYork to serve on our parish Finance Council and Janet Gomez from the Parish Council, my gratitude to J.B. Jett and Christopher Lizak, who each received the next highest number of votes in our recent parish council election process, and who have each graciously agreed to serve as members on this important parish leadership and advisory body. Continue to kindly remember all of our parish leadership bodies among your intentions, as they assist us through their apostolic work in carrying out the mission Our Lord has entrusted to our parish, all on behalf of His Holy Name. Athletic Fields and Parish Center Updates Athletic Fields Update: As you know, these athletic fields are currently in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We are still awaiting the building permits from the City of Raleigh, now anticipated the week of July 29, 2019, with construction lead by Clancy and Theys, to begin directly following. The building process will be about 3 months, with completion anticipated in Fall 2019.
Parish Center Update: Info will be forthcoming on the funding development campaign for the Center, which we have scheduled to begin the weekend of September 8, 2019. Another example of its great need, in trying to schedule space for an upcoming adult formation series, our parish staff asked, “what should we cancel?” as every room is booked! More to come, but kindly add this effort to your intentions, as it is mission essential for us as a parish as we continue to grow in Our Lord and how He invites us to serve His purposes. Cathedral Piazza Evergreens, Not So Much ± FYI, as you may have noticed, the evergreens in the large pots/bollards in the Piazza, went the way of all things. This was not because of the heat nor lack of watering, rather a defect in the pots/bollards themselves. We are researching a solution for these containers, along with new greenery, with the nolongerevergreens now removed.
Also, FYI ± through the generosity of some parishioners, parking lot resealing and restriping for all our lots on our Sacred Heart campus will be taking place this coming week, as well as the updating of the landscaping in the front door area of our Cathedral School and power washing of the building ± all small updates, each reflecting our stewardship of these important places in our parish history, now entrusted to our care. Celebrating Dad’s Birthday ± This coming Monday, with a stop or two on the way to and from, I will be taking some time to drive up home to Chicago for the celebration of my Dad’s 97th birthday, which we will observe on the actual day, August 4th. Kindly keep him in your prayers. I will be returning to Raleigh on August 8th. My special gratitude to Father Pedro Muñoz, Father Jane Kane, Deacon Mike Alig, Deacon Juan Banda and our parish pastoral staff during this time.

L(,-$". %# ,/ W%$1 First Reading Gn 18:2032
In those days, the LORD said: "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin so grave, that I must go down and see whether or not their actions fully correspond to the cry against them that comes to me. I mean to find out."
While Abraham's visitors walked on farther toward Sodom, the LORD remained standing before Abraham. Then Abraham drew nearer and said: "Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty? Suppose there were fifty innocent people in the city; would you wipe out the place, rather than spare it for the sake of the fifty innocent people within it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to make the innocent die with the guilty so that the innocent and the guilty would be treated alike! Should not the judge of all the world act with justice?" The LORD replied, "If I find fifty innocent people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake." Abraham spoke up again: "See how I am presuming to speak to my Lord, though I am but dust and ashes! What if there are five less than fifty innocent people? Will you destroy the whole city because of those five?" He answered, "I will not destroy it, if I find fortyfive there." But Abraham persisted, saying "What if only forty are found there?" He replied, "I will forbear doing it for the sake of the forty." Then Abraham said, "Let not my Lord grow impatient if I go on. What if only thirty are found there?" He replied, "I will forbear doing it if I can find but thirty there." Still Abraham went on, "Since I have thus dared to speak to my Lord, what if there are no more than twenty?" The LORD answered, "I will not destroy it, for the sake of the twenty." But he still persisted: "Please, let not my Lord grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least ten there?" He replied, "For the sake of those ten, I will not destroy it."

Second Reading Col 2:1214
Brothers and sisters: You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead in transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross.

Alleluia Rom 8:15bc
R. Thanks be to God.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. You have received a Spirit of adoption, through which we cry, Abba, Father. R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Lk 11:113
Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test."
And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,' and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.' I tell you, if he does not get up to give the visitor the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.
"And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"

“What if there at least ten there?”
There is also something else that may occur. Wink tells us that “our intercessions sometimes change us as we open ourselves to new possibilities we had not guessed. . .to become the answer to our prayer.” Even with that, “intercession,” Wink says, “is more than that. . .The change in even one person thus changes what God can thereby do in that world” (302).
