Holy Day this Week ± On Thursday, August 15th this week we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady. While only declared as a dogma in 1950 among our Catholic teachings, this aspect of our faith dates in practice to among the earliest centuries of the Church. How important it is today, as it was in those earliest centuries, to not only honor God’s plan for the Mother of His only Son, but also His plan for us, to include honor and dignity for the temple of which you and I are given stewardship over in this life: our body.

As we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady in Heaven, recall not only the need to listen closely to Our Lord in prayer daily and so know how He wishes you to participate in His Plan for you and others, but also, how that Plan necessarily includes fostering respect for the dignity of the human person from the moment of conception to natural death. As a special note in today’s culture as well, how we foster that respect through the language we use in conversation and in reference to others. See this bulletin and our online resources for Mass times as we celebrate Mary, Our Mother in the ways of faith. Back to School ± As in the public system, so with our 23 schools throughout our Diocese, with the return this week of our kids to Cathedral School for the start of our new 20192020 academic year, which will begin on Wednesday, August 14th. We are blessed that nearly 240 students will be participating in what is among the primary pieces of the mission of our parish, under the leadership of our new Cathedral School Principal, Peggy Lane and our excellent faculty and staff. Kindly include our students and our entire Cathedral School faculty and staff among your intentions this coming week and throughout the year as they pursue excellence not only in education, but also in formation of Catholic life and those who will serve as future leaders in the greater community. Athletic Fields and Parish Center Updates Athletic Fields Update: As you know, these athletic fields are currently in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We were expecting the Building Permit from the City of Raleigh the week of July 29, 2019, but as of this writing, the City of Raleigh has still not released it ± several contractors have stated they are waiting as well, so we are not unique in that respect. Construction will be led by Clancy and Theys, who are set to begin directly following when we obtain the permit. The building process will be about 3 months, with completion anticipated in Fall 2019.

Parish Center Update: Info will be forthcoming on the building campaign for the Center, which we have scheduled to begin the weekend of September 8, 2019. Another example of its great need, in trying to schedule space for where to host an upcoming adult formation series, our parish staff asked me, “what should we cancel?” as every room is booked! More to come, but kindly add this effort to your intentions, as it is mission essential for us as a parish as we continue to grow in Our Lord and how He invites us to serve His purposes. Sacred Heart Campus Improvements ± Through the generosity of some parishioners, parking lot resealing and restriping for all our lots on our Sacred Heart campus took place this last week, as well as beginning an updating of the landscaping in the front door area of our Cathedral School. The school building was also power washed, now looking much brighter, akin to when it was completed 80 years ago. Each of these are updates which reflect our stewardship of these important places in our parish history, now entrusted to our care, and which we now use for all of our prayer, formation and activities associated with the mission of our parish.

Note that as part of the building campaign for the new Parish Center on the Cathedral campus, studies are now being completed for what improvements will be included in that campaign for needed improvements to our existing Sacred Heart campus school building, namely in the area of technology and other basic and infrastructure. I have employed a local engineering firm to guide those determinations and timing for future infrastructure CapEx, so we can plan accordingly. Welcome to Father Peter Devereaux, LC ± As mentioned earlier this summer, we are temporarily hosting at our Sacred Heart residence the two priests newly assigned to serve the students and faculty at NC State. This week, in addition to Father Joshua West, LC, Father Peter Devereaux, LC joins us, as NC State also gears for the resumption of classes with the 20192020 academic year. Both priests will be with us and in residence at Sacred Heart through the end of October 2019 and will also be assisting us with our 7 am daily Masses at our Cathedral. Thank You for All your Prayers and Well Wishes ± My great gratitude for your prayers and well wishes for Dad as he celebrated his 97th birthday up in the Chicago area last week. We celebrated the day in the hospital with him as he has been addressing some heart issues. His physicians are amazed though at his strength and he is doing much better, though with this writing he remains hospitalized. Kindly keep him (Dean Brockman) among your intentions as we pray for all those who are ill in hospital, assisted living or at home.

So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore.

Gospel Lk 12:3540

Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have the servants recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

For the 12p Mass:

R!.('" #%$ ,- W* A-!. Second Reading Heb 11:12, 812

Brothers and sisters: Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Because of it the ancients were well attested. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he sojourned in the promised land as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise; for he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and maker is God. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age ²and Sarah herself was sterile² for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. He went out, not knowing where he was to go. Hebrews 11:8

All of today’s readings speak about people on the move in search of a new homeland. As Christians, we are all migrants journeying with others; all of us responding to God’s call to prepare for the coming of God’s concept of home, a home built on the foundations of justice, mercy, virtue, and love. Our task is to animate lives of service and solidarity with others who may have had different life experiences than ours.

Perhaps, one of the best experiences of accompaniment that I have found is in building Habitat for Humanity homes for working poor families, who sometimes come from far away countries. My husband and I have volunteered with Habitat Wake County for many years and, in 2010, we decided to initiate another effort. Knowing that we needed lots of helping hands, I decided to put out an appeal in our area parishes’ bulletins. “But,” I said to Chris, not wanting to get our hopes up, “nobody ever reads the bulletin.”

Want to see how God worksthe Catholic Coalition will be building our 10th house starting this August 24th (if the weather cooperates!). Our new Habitat partner family lived in Congo ten years ago. Parish bulletins turned out to be a wonderful conduit as the Coalition currently consists of the following: St. Luke and Our Lady of Lourdes (the 1st two parishes with the funds back in 2010), St. Andrews in Apex, St. Raphael, St. Joseph, St. Francis, Sacred Heart/Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, Cardinal Gibbons High School, NCSU Catholic Campus Ministry, and Catholic Young Adults.

We may come to appreciate more deeply the various landforms (mountains, deserts, rock formations, valleys, plains, and beaches) during the month of August. They give us bearing, direction, and the geological history of our lives. This is the beginning of awareness of the "here" in our lives. The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord shows us the "hereness" of the risen Lord, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary speaks of God's power to the blessed. We have two choices: we can choose to extend the Savior's redeeming power to our wounded earth by our actions or we can choose to withdraw from this awesome challenge. This August, STOP THE JUNK MAIL. Contact the Direct Marketing Association at https://dmachoice.thedma.org. This will reduce your junk mail up to 75%.

The riches of this journeying together is so much more than just the end product of sturdy, wellbuilt homes for lovely families. Treasures include a manifestation of what it means to live a Christian life; the forming of friendships united in a common cause; the expansion of each our worldviews and understandings; and, the pure experience of selfless love. Sometimes, I can keenly feel Jesus’, the carpenter, presence among us.

Like the ancient Hebrews who knew that they had to escape from certain death in Egypt, to Abraham who began his journey into the unknown in faith, to Jesus, in today’s Gospel, urging followers to not be afraid, we are tasked to step out of our comfort zones and do the same. This is the way of Jesus.

The kitchen is a good place to start integrating an environmental consciousness into your every day life. 1.Use reusable containers to store food in your refrigerator. 2.Use unbleached coffee filters. 3.Keep rags in the kitchen to wipe up spills instead of using paper towels. Respect for the Rights of Migrants “No country can be expected to address today’s problems of migration by itself. We are all witnesses of the burden of suffering, the dislocation and the aspirations that accompany the flow of migrants. The phenomenon, as everyone knows, is difficult to manage; but there is no doubt that foreign workers, despite any difficulties concerning integration, make a significant contribution to the economic development of the host country through their labor, besides that which they make to their country of origin through the money they send home. Obviously, these laborers cannot be considered as a commodity or a mere workforce. They must not, therefore, be treated like any other factor of production. Every migrant is a human person who, as such, possesses fundamental, inalienable rights that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance.”...Pope Benedict XVI, “Caritas in Veritate”. Papa Benedicto XVI, “Caritas in Veritate”.
