2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal ± Each year the BAA reminds us of how as a parish we are a portion of the People of God, who together comprise the Diocese of Raleigh. As such, we are asked to support more than thirty ministries which reach the charitable, spiritual, and educational needs of thousands of individuals throughout our Diocese. In supporting our portion of the mission of Christ, we do so not only as the people of Holy Name of Jesus Parish, but also those of our Diocese, who invest our resources for the good of our Church and the world.

I am very grateful for how well you regularly witness to incorporating stewardship in your spiritual life, returning to God out of your need to give thanks for His blessings in your life. From your participation in our many parish ministries, to your financial support of our parish mission, these are all great blessings in the life of our Cathedral parish. With the charities you contribute to each year, kindly remember to include the Bishop’s Annual Appeal on your list. Welcome to Diocesan Catholic Charities Staff ± As we enter now the second week of the 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal this weekend, we are blessed to welcome two members of the staff of Catholic Charities from the Diocese of Raleigh, Ms. Lisa Perkins, who serves as the Executive Director and Mr. Abram Flores, who is Director of Operations. As we heard last week from our seminarian and fellow Cathedral parishioner Nick Rapkoch, about how the BAA supports his formation and that of all our seminarians, so this week we will hear about Catholic Charities and how it assists those most in need throughout eastern North Carolina. Join me in welcoming Lisa and Abram and in offering our support for the mission of Christ in our Diocese through our second inpew giving opportunity this weekend for this and the over 30 ministries the Bishop’s Annual Appeal funds each year.

Many of you know how important it is to include the BAA among your regular charitable work. I ask that you prayerfully consider a slight increase in your gift over last year, which will greatly assist us as a parish toward achieving our parish goal of $186,644. As always, my great gratitude to each of you for your fabulous support of our parish and Diocesan ministries and for the many ways you witness to stewardship as a way of life. First Reconciliation Prayers ± Kindly keep among your intentions in this week ahead all of our children who will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 10:00 am. What a wonderful opportunity to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in advance and for their intentions, that the same embrace that Saint Faustina experienced in the power of God’s mercy, so our children receiving this sacrament for the first time may have when they receive the One who is Mercy itself. New Ministry: Assistance with Cathedral Sound System ± One of the blessings of our parish is our new Cathedral church and one of our challenges is fine tuning its sound system, so that the voice of those who assist in various aspects of the liturgy may be easily heard, such as Readers and Cantors. The system is designed so that these modest adjustments may be easily made via an iPad. I am in process of assembling a team to assist in this process for each Mass. Training will be provided. I ask that you prayerfully consider this new ministry as a way in which you may serve one of the most important things we do as Catholics, our prayer in the sacred liturgy. Kindly call our parish office to sign up and for more information. Catholic Schools Week 2019 ± This week begins the nationwide observance of Catholic Schools Week, where we raise awareness to the commitment of our parish to this important mission of the education and formation of our children through our great Cathedral School. My great gratitude to our Cathedral School Principal, Dr. Janice Jett, together with her faculty and staff and our school students and their parents, who each assist us in achieving excellence in this important part of our parish mission. Please remember them all among your intentions this week in a special way as well.

BTW, note that our planning for our new parish center, gym and athletic fields on the Holy Name of Jesus campus has not been put aside. Much planning work has been ongoing since last summer with various committees, such as our Parish Council, Finance Council and our Building Committee working diligently on all the details. I hope to share updates with you on the project very shortly, plus seek your further input. Stay tuned! What That Symbol Mean on the Back of Your Vehicle? ± Vehicles often carry multiple insignia. Why not our parish too, in a way which can spark curiosity and a conversation about our Catholic faith and an invitation to join us for Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. You may already be seeing them ± the IHS logo inside of a cross. This the symbol found on the Cathedral cornerstone, blessed by Pope Francis and which is our new parish logo.

As an update, I will plan to include a sticker for your vehicle in my annual letter prior to the beginning of the Season of Lent, which will begin with Ash Wednesday on March 6th. Stickers will be one per registered parish family and may also be traded at the parish office for a magnet version of the symbol. Additional stickers will also be made available at the parish office for your other vehicles. These will be a great witness around town and beyond to our Catholic faith, how it has made such a difference for you, having encountered Our Lord and Who calls each of us to follow Him with our life unto Life eternal: the Holy Name of Jesus.

First Reading Neh 8:24a, 56, 810

Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, which consisted of men, women, and those children old enough to understand. Standing at one end of the open place that was before the Water Gate, he read out of the book from daybreak till midday, in the presence of the men, the women, and those children old enough to understand; and all the people listened attentively to the book of the law. Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. He opened the scroll so that all the people might see it ² for he was standing higher up than any of the people ²; and, as he opened it, all the people rose. Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people, their hands raised high, answered, "Amen, amen!" Then they bowed down and prostrated themselves before the LORD, their faces to the ground. Ezra read plainly from the book of the law of God, interpreting it so that all could understand what was read. Then Nehemiah, that is, His Excellency, and Ezra the priestscribe and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all the people: "Today is holy to the LORD your God. Do not be sad, and do not weep"² for all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law. He said further: "Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared; for today is holy to our LORD. Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength!"

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 15

The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; The ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. R. Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. R.

Second Reading 1 Cor 12:1214, 27

Brothers and sisters: As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. Now the body is not a single part, but many. You are Christ's body, and individually parts of it.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia Cf. Lk 4:18

R. Alleluia, alleluia. The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, and to proclaim liberty to captives. R.Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Lk 1:14; 4:1421

Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.

For the 5p, 7a and 10a Masses:

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.

He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

 For the 12:00 pm Mass:

R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. R. The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. R. The 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

Evangelio Lc 1:14; 4:1421

P$"-',! 1 6! S&!'!

M: “C V A”
