Hospitality for Two Priests New to Our Diocese ± Welcome to Father Joshua West, LC and later this month, Father Peter Devereaux, LC, who will have temporary residence at our Cathedral rectory on our Sacred Heart campus, until more permanent residence at Saint Joseph Parish in Raleigh is ready in November 2019. Father West began his assignment this week as Priest Chaplain to the students and faculty of North Carolina State University, to be joined by Father Devereaux on July 20th in a parttime capacity, with the balance of his priestly ministry assignment in the pastoral and spiritual care of Regnum Christi in the Diocese of Raleigh. Formation for the Sacrament of Marriage ± One of the blessings of our parish is to serve well over 100 couples per year who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Marriage, either here at our Cathedral or at Sacred Heart Church or at a home parish of one of the future spouses. In assessing the needs over the last year for formation of these couples, I have drafted a much more robust process, which will be implemented shortly with the assistance of Suzanne Carter, of our Diocesan offices, as well as other volunteers from our parish. Look for further details.

Finance Council Leadership Transition and Gratitude ± My great gratitude as well to John Healy and Bill Cavanaugh for their interim leadership on our parish Finance Council during this past transition year between Father Kerber and myself. Their counsel has been invaluable to me as pastor this last year, especially in assessing and beginning to address needs. My gratitude as well to Marjorie Sack York, who will be joining our Finance Council membership with considerable experience as well in finance matters. Schedule Review and Coordination Assistance: Additionally, I have been working with our school faculty and staff on reviewing our school academic schedule for next year, receiving recommendations for how we might improve and streamline, that we can focus on what we need to pursue academic excellence in the basics in math and science, as well as the humanities. I am especially grateful for the assistance of Mrs. Diane McGrady, who served as a faculty member at our Cathedral School for over 30 years and who is now assisting us in coordination of school matters during this transition period until we hire a new principal, anticipated later this month.

Athletic Fields Update: As you know, these athletic fields are currently in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We received some direction from the City of Raleigh in the approval process and adjustments to the plan are currently being made, as directed by the City and then will be resubmitted for final approval. This means that construction will most likely start 30 days later than planned. With a July 2019 start, we should still be completed by early Fall 2019, as planned. Good news on pricing for the artificial turf on the soccer field in that it will produce some savings ± always good news!

Interviews: I express my gratitude to each of the committee members, Christine Bost, Holly Greeves, Ted Mooney, Dawn Neuman and to Tim Nichols, who is serving as the Chair for the Committee, and also to Mike Fedewa, our Diocesan Superintendent of Schools, who is working closely with the committee in this process. Interviews with applicants are now set and in progress. Kindly, keep the committee and their important work among your intentions and look for future updates.

L*!+%,- .( !"# W.%$ First Reading Is 66:1014c

Thus says the LORD: Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her; exult, exult with her, all you who were mourning over her! Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts! For thus says the LORD: Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent. As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms, and fondled in her lap; as a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

Second Reading Gal 6:1418

Brothers and sisters: May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation. Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the Israel of God.

From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

The Word of the Lord

When you see this, your heart shall rejoice and your bodies flourish like the grass; the LORD's power shall be known to his servants.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 66:13, 45, 67, 16, 20

R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. Shout joyfully to God, all the earth, sing praise to the glory of his name; proclaim his glorious praise. Say to God, "How tremendous are your deeds!" R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. "Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to your name!" Come and see the works of God, his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam. R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. He rules by his might forever. R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me. Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness! R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

R. Thanks be to God.

 Alleluia Col 3:15a, 16a

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Lk 10:19

At that time the Lord appointed seventytwo others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'"

The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

Peace and mercy be to all. . . Galatians 6:16

As I am writing this column, it is the 75th anniversary of the D Day invasion at Normandy. Aged soldiers are receiving the thanks for what they and their fallen fellow soldiers made possiblethe beginning of the end of Hitler’s reign. In the ensuing years after the end of World War II, peace in every corner of the world has remained elusive. For Christians, peace means “being in a right relationship with God and with one another.” Often the concept of peace is tied to the Jewish word, “shalom.” Shalom, however, is much more. As a Hebrew lexicon states, shalom is “a state of being whole, complete or full” and “desiring completeness to another.”

Rabbi David Zaslow writes, “Contrary to popular opinion the Hebrew word shalom does not mean “peace,” at least not in the English sense of the word. It comes from a Hebrew rootword that means “wholeness.” And what is wholeness? In the Hebraic way of thinking, wholeness is the joining together of opposites. That’s why we say “shalom” when we greet friends and when we are wish them farewell. In the most opposite of situations (coming and going) we use the same word, “shalom.” There is a hidden connection to all our comings and goings; they are wondrously linked together. When I come from somewhere, I am going to someplace else. When I realize this, I feel “wholeness,” and that is the source of peace ± the knowledge that all my opposing energies are somehow linked and part of a single whole. True peace must have wholeness as its foundation.” https://rabbidavidzaslow.com/thedeepermeaningofshalom/

Why do I mention this? It occurs to me that if we are ever to have true peace by a shalom definition, we have to realize that our opposites are connected. People, who we view as different than us, are connected to us. That which we do not understand is trying to teach us about that which we do not understand! As Pope Francis so often states, “Everything is connected!” The sooner we embrace this concept, the sooner we will achieve the peace proclaimed by Jesus and Paul.

This wholeness is not only between people but with the natural world also. We cannot continue to plunder the resources of our earth and be able to operate out of a place of wholeness. Every Catholic needs to read Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/ documents/papafrancesco_20150524_enciclicalaudatosi.html

Shalom!

Want to make a difference? We are starting another Catholic Charities Support Circle at Cathedral and invite you to join. A Support Circle consists of a group of parishioners who accompany a homeless family for one year in order to help them improve their situation. Jesus, in his wisdom, asks that we accompany the poor and the benefits are many, starting with our own spiritual life and seeing the poor through a different lens. We offer a "hand up." Say "YES" and contact Chris topher Gorski at [email protected].
