Phase I and Phase II Underway: Growing in Faith, Building Together ± Construction on our athletic fields is now well underway on our Cathedral Campus, as is our Building Campaign for the new Parish Center and improvements to our Sacred Heart Campus. With now triple the needs for additional meeting space for faith formation and community activities, let alone the inadequate parking resources, our tremendous growth in our parish has far exceeded the capacity of our facilities, which were largely built in the 1930’s. With almost 1000 children now in Catholic formation and education, plus 100’s of adults, we simply need much more room.

This great endeavor to build a Parish Center is being done as a parish family. Our family is Catholic in the best sense of the term, comprising people, literally from all over the world, walks of life, vocations, all serving Our Lord in many varied ways. As a family, we know that what we do, serves now and in the future. We also know that it often takes sacrifice, what we do out of love for our family, to help others reach the potential Our Lord places in every human soul.

Join me then in praying for our success. Also, see the trifold brochure on our project, which will be sent to you and prayerfully begin considering a sacrificial gift to this great endeavor. You will notice a schedule on the back and how a sacrificial gift could be structured over 36 months ± what a monthly sacrifice could look like for prayerful consideration in your monthly budget.

In the coming weeks, I will be in contact with you in this process of prayerful consideration of a sacrificial gift. All great things require sacrifice and that we must work with others to succeed. I invite you to do just that as we work on building facilities we need to pass on the gift of Catholic faith to the next generation, and in so doing, making it a priority in our life, to give glory where it is forever due: in all things to God, always on behalf of the Holy Name of Jesus.

Expansion of Daily Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral ± As you know, we began daily Mass at 7:00 am on Tuesdays and Fridays at Cathedral during the Season of Lent earlier this year. I am pleased to announce that with the generous assistance of the priests now serving the Catholic Campus Ministry at North Carolina State University, together with our three priests serving our Cathedral parish, we will be expanding daily Mass at 7:00 am at the Cathedral to Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, beginning the week of October 7, 2019. What a great way to begin the day: Mass at 7:00 am and off to the balance of your day by 7:30 am, having heard Our Lord in Sacred Scripture and fed by Him with His Real Presence in the Eucharist ± to be sure, a blessed prescription for holiness and success in our discipleship!

Bible Study ± As you may know, several Bible studies are now available in our parish through our young adult community. Father Kane and I are now planning to add an additional one for our parish community. Watch for upcoming details.

New Finance Council Chair ± A development on our parish Finance Council. As I informed you earlier in the summer, my renewed gratitude for the service of John Healey as Chair for the interim period between the pastorate of my predecessor, Father Justin Kerber, C.P. and myself. Following a formation process for our entire parish Finance Council, led by our Diocesan Chief Financial Officer, Russ Elmayan and our Diocesan Financial Planning and Analysis Director, Peter Ciulla, I am pleased to announce Erin Goodson as our new parish Finance Council Chair. Kindly include her and all our parish leadership among your continued intentions.

Save the Date: Annual Red Mass ± On Friday, October, 4th Bishop Luis is inviting all those who work or study in the legal field or in government to join him for the annual Red Mass at 12:10 pm at Sacred Heart Church downtown. This Mass is so named, as to acknowledge the essential role of the Holy Spirit to guide all study and decisions in matters pertaining to legal decisions as well as those in government. Join us for this important annual gathering for prayer, followed by a reception following at the Campbell University Wiggins School of Law, directly across the street from Sacred Heart. If this is your field of work and/or study, also an excellent opportunity to get more information and meet members of our local Saint Thomas More Society, which is a group founded a few years ago by and for professionals in support of the study and practice of the law from a Catholic perspective. Plan to join us.

Save the Date: Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi and Blessing of Animals ± The Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi this year on Friday, October 4, 2019. We will do so, but for ease of our parishioners and pilgrims who wish to participate in another tradition associated with this feast, we will bless animals after our Saturday morning daily Mass, which will be celebrated next weekend, on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 9 am. Plan to join us!

Save the Date: Parish Picnic ± Our parish picnic will take place on Sunday, October 13th. My great thanks to our Living Faith Committee for all of the kind assistance in this annual gathering of our parish community for some time of fellowship and fun.

Discerning Stewardship in Ministry ± That same weekend of October 13th and also following both the Saturday night and Sunday Masses, we will be hosting all of the liturgical and community life ministries of our parish, as part of the year around diet to assist all of our parishioners to discern how Our Lord is calling you to serve Him and others through your stewardship in ministry. Many opportunities to do so, from serving as an Usher, extending a welcoming to those joining us for Mass and other liturgies, to assisting as a Reader, inviting the prayer of the community at Mass of God’s Word.

Our youth as well, from serving at the altar as an Altar Server to also proclaiming scripture as a Reader or serving as an Usher ± a number of parents in our parish community introducing their child to participating and being a good steward in ministry, by modeling what it is to serve as an Usher right along with their child. Others as a model in some of our ministries which serve our parish community life. Well done! Discern your ministry: ask God how you may serve Him and His Church through your stewardship in ministry: How may I serve you Lord?

The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

L(,-$". %# ,/ W%$1 First ReadingAm 6:1a, 47

Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 146:7, 89, 910

R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Blessed he who keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!

The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those who were bowed down. The LORD loves the just; the LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!

The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!

For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

For the 12p Mass:

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

The Word of the Lord

 AlleluiaCf. 2 Cor 8:9

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

 GospelLk 16:1931

Jesus said to the Pharisees: "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.' He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' Then Abraham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"

 Second Reading 1 Tm 6:1116

But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, The 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Woe to the complacent. . . Amos 6:1

Sunday is the World Day of Migrants & Refugees. What follows are excerpts from Pope Francis’ prophetic message: “The most economically advanced societies are witnessing a growing trend towards extreme individualism which, combined with a utilitarian mentality and reinforced by the media, is producing a “globalization of indifference.” In this scenario, migrants, refugees, displaced persons and victims of trafficking have become emblems of exclusion. . .That attitude is an alarm bell warning of the moral decline we will face if we continue to give ground to the throwaway culture.” “For this reason, the presence of migrants and refugees ± and of vulnerable people in general ± is an invitation to recover some of those essential dimensions of our Christian existence and our humanity that risk being overlooked in a prosperous society. That is why it is not just about migrants. When we show concern for them, we also show concern for ourselves, for everyone; in taking care of them, we all grow; in listening to them, we also give voice to a part of ourselves that we may keep hidden because it is not well regarded nowadays.” “It is not just about migrants: it is also about our fears. : it is about charity. : it is about our humanity. : it is a question of seeing that no one is excluded. : it is about putting the last in first place. : it is about the whole person, about all people. : it is about building the city of God and man.”

“Our response to the challenges posed by contemporary migration can be summed up in four verbs: welcome, protect, promote and integrate. . .They describe the Church’s mission to all those living in the existential peripheries . . .If we put those four verbs into practice, we will help build the city of God and man. . .promote the integral human development of all people. . .help the world community to come closer to the goals of sustainable development that it has set for itself and that, lacking such an approach, will prove difficult to achieve. . . the Lord is calling us to conversion, to be set free from exclusivity, indifference and the throwaway culture. . .the Lord invites us to embrace fully our Christian life.” http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/ messages/migration/documents/papafrancesco_20190527_worldmigrants day2019.html
