A Blessed Beginning to Lent 2019 ± The sacred Season of Lent began this last Wednesday with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. As is our Tradition as Catholics, we are on a fortyday journey of prayer, fasting and almsgiving ± our annual retreat time to assist us as individuals and as the Body of Christ, to grow closer to our Lord by following Him into the desert. While each of these three major Lenten disciplines are beautiful for the soul, there is perhaps nothing more personally striking than our prayer relationship with God ± striking whether we are praying alone or in community. As we look to our life of prayer this coming Lent, I invite you to look at how full, how active, and how consciously you participate in your prayer relationship with God and with others praying with you. In the measure that you do so in prayer, is the measure of where exactly you are in your relationship with God. Consider that question honestly as you begin Lent this week, and as you look for the reforms needed in your life. Through prayer, fasting, penance and almsgiving, which we are all invited to set in place for these forty days, and through true conversion of your usual way of thinking and doing when it comes to God, may this Lent be a blessed one for you and for all of us as a parish community of faith. Together seek to embrace more completely the mystery and offer of new and more abundant Life in Christ.

Prayer in Beginning Your Day with Mass ± There is no higher form of communal prayer this side of heaven than Mass. With the beginning of Lent, we will also be beginning a daily Mass at our Cathedral at 7:00 am on Tuesdays and Fridays. Given all of the other scheduled liturgies and meetings, this schedule will be one that will be sustainable even following Lent and will also enable us to use our beautiful Cathedral for more than just weekend Masses and other liturgies. So, plan to join us on your way to work at our Cathedral at 7:00 am or on a break, prior to lunch at 12:10 pm downtown at Sacred Heart. Either way, seek the fuel of God’s grace and renewal that He gives to us in the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Son in the Holy Eucharist.

Also, do not forget about the great Lenten devotion of Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm, preceded by a simple Soup Supper at 5:30 pm. See this bulletin for more details, as the location each week for language will shift between our Cathedral and Sacred Heart Church.

Reconciliation and Penance ± An essential element of how we grow in communion with our Lord is through honestly looking into the eyes of Our Lord as we come face to face with our sinfulness and Our Lord’s mercy and love. As you do, contemplate His mercy and then celebrate it in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and do your penance received, as together having each done this regular work of the spiritual life, we find our way back to Him, renewed. The sacrament will be available each weekday (now including Thursday) after the 12:10 pm Mass at Sacred Heart, as well as on Saturday afternoons at our Cathedral from 35 pm. Joined by over 20 brother priests, our parish reconciliation liturgy with individual confession will be also at our Cathedral on Tuesday, March 26th at 7 pm. Plan to join us as we fulfill with God’s mercy, His call to us: “Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart….” (Joel 2: 12)

Rite of Election ± This Sunday, the First Sunday of Lent, at 3: 30 pm, our Cathedral will host for the first time the Rite of Election for those who are catechumens. These are those who have discerned in varied ways, Our Lord calling them to follow him to the Christian life. The name is given to this ritual as Bishop Luis will declare, based on the testimony of their godparents, these catechumens “elect” for full initiation into the Life of the Church at Easter. All sacraments have this dynamic of election. You see it in those to be ordained, who are called forth by name, with testimony given as to their suitability for service as a cleric ± whether a deacon or a priest. Thus, “election” is an important aspect of our vocation, whether a vocation of life or that of the Christian life, begun for us in baptism.

Please pray in general for the all of those who will be elected for the Easter sacraments ± after this ritual and the Bishop’s declaration to them, no long catechumens, but “elect.” It will be several hundred from throughout our Diocese and eastern North Carolina, joining hundreds of others, already one with us in baptism, who are candidates for full initiation in the Church at Easter this year. Usually both groups total to 1200 to 1400 every year, making effectively a small parish added every year to the faithful in our Diocese and the Catholic discipleship of Our Lord. Pray for them, their godparents and sponsors, especially as they enter with us this sacred Season of Lent and if your schedule allows, plan to join us for the Rite of Election this Sunday.

New Parish Center, Gym and Athletic Fields ± Information Meetings Times Set ± Note that planning for our new athletic fields, parish center and gym on the Holy Name of Jesus campus, as well as further development and renovation of our downtown campus has not been forgotten and has been a high priority for me, as I know the great needs. Steady work on planning and pricing has been ongoing since my arrival as pastor last summer, with our Parish Council, Finance Council and our Building Committee, staff and many others working diligently on all the details.

Information sessions on the phases of the project are now set, both for our entire parish community, as well as for school parents. These dates are as follows:

My renewed thanks to Paul Bedo, who is the Chair of our Building Committee, as well as all the Committee members for their great dedication to this important project

Update: 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal ± With Bishop Luis, know of our gratitude to those of you who have already made your annual gift to the appeal. Like our offering at Sunday Mass, the BAA is part of our regular giving and a great reminder that our financial stewardship extends beyond the walls of our parish to throughout our Diocese, as we join also in returning to God, giving thanks for His blessings in our life.

If you have been prayerfully considering a gift to the BAA as part of your list of regular charitable giving, kindly consider a slight increase in your gift over last year, which will greatly assist us as a parish toward achieving our parish goal of $186,644. Currently and with many more gifts still to process, we are at just over 600 gifts pledged and now very close towards our goal. With Kevin Green and Anne Speicher of our parish and who have assisted me in chairing the BAA this year, my great gratitude to each of you for your fabulous support of our parish and Diocesan ministries and for the many ways you witness to stewardship as a way of life.

First Reading Dt 26:410

Second Reading Rom 10:813

Moses spoke to the people, saying: "The priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the LORD, your God. Then you shall declare before the Lord, your God, 'My father was a wandering Aramean who went down to Egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien. But there he became a nation great, strong, and numerous. When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us, imposing hard labor upon us, we cried to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and he heard our cry and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. He brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand and outstretched arm, with terrifying power, with signs and wonders; and bringing us into this country, he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey. Therefore, I have now brought you the firstfruits of the products of the soil which you, O LORD, have given me.' And having set them before the Lord, your God, you shall bow down in his presence."

Brothers and sisters: What does Scripture say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart ²that is, the word of faith that we preach², for, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. For the Scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

The Word of the Lord

Gospel Lk 4:113

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 91:12, 1011, 1213, 1415

R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, say to the LORD, "My refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust." R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent, For to his angels he has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways. R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. Upon their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the asp and the viper; you shall trample down the lion and the dragon. R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. Because he clings to me, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress; I will deliver him and glorify him. R. Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. For the 5p, 7a and 10a Masses:

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Verse before the Gospel Mt 4:4b

R. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory! One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. R.Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ King of endless glory!

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread." Jesus answered him, "It is written, One does not live on bread alone." Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me." Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve." Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and: With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone." Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test." When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.

The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

In researching the phrase above, I found that it was gathered up and incorporated into the Book of Deuteronomy because it was already of great antiquity. The name "Aram" has been found in one of the oldest examples of writing, the Mari texts of the 18th century BC. The Hebrew word for alien, foreigner, or stranger, ger, is used in the Torah for the first time when Abram’s offspring will be gerim (Genesis 15:13) and Abram calls himself a ger (Genesis 23:4). It is written in Exodus 22:20: You shall not taunt or oppress a ger for you were gerim in the land of Egypt. It further states in Leviticus 19:33: When a ger dwells among you in the land, do not taunt him. The ger who dwells with you shall be like a native among you, and you shall love him like yourself, for you were gerim in the land of Egypt. Scholars view that the ancient phrase expresses a sense of belonging; an expression around which a people could form.

Primera Lectura Dt 26, 410

Segunda Lectura Rom 10, 813

R.Honor y gloria a ti, Señor Jesús. R.Honor y gloria a ti, Señor Jesús.

R: Gloria a ti Señor Jesús.
