Back to School ± As in the public system, so with our 23 schools throughout our Diocese, with the return last week of our kids to Cathedral School for the start of our new 20192020 academic year, which beganon Wednesday, August 14th. We are blessed that nearly 240 students are participating in what is among the primary pieces of the mission of our parish, under the leadership of our new Cathedral School Principal, Peggy Lane and our excellent faculty and staff. Kindly include our students and our entire Cathedral School faculty and staff among your intentions this coming week and throughout the year as they pursue excellence not only in education, but also in formation of Catholic life and those who will serve as future leaders in the greater community. Athletic Fields and Parish Center Updates Athletic Fields Update: As you know, these athletic fields are currently in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We were expecting the Building Permit from the City of Raleigh the week of July 29, 2019, but as of this writing, the City of Raleigh has still not released it ± several contractors have stated they are waiting as well, so we are not unique in that respect. Construction will be led by Clancy and Theys, who are set to begin directly following when we obtain the permit. The building process will be about 3 months, with completion anticipated in Fall 2019.

Parish Center Update: Info will be forthcoming on the building campaign for the Center, which we have scheduled to begin the weekend of September 8, 2019. Another example of its great need, in trying to schedule space for where to host an upcoming adult formation series, our parish staff asked me, “what should we cancel?” as every room is booked! More to come, but kindly add this effort to your intentions, as it is mission essential for us as a parish as we continue to grow in Our Lord and how He invites us to serve His purposes. Sacred Heart Campus Improvements ± Through the generosity of some parishioners, parking lot resealing and restriping for all our lots on our Sacred Heart campus took place this last week, as well as beginning an updating of the landscaping in the front door area of our Cathedral School. The school building was also power washed, now looking much brighter, akin to when it was completed 80 years ago. Each of these are updates which reflect our stewardship of these important places in our parish history, now entrusted to our care, and which we now use for all of our prayer, formation and activities associated with the mission of our parish. Note that as part of the building campaign for the new Parish Center on the Cathedral campus, studies are now being completed for what improvements will be included in that campaign for needed improvements to our existing Sacred Heart campus school building, namely in the area of technology and other basic and infrastructure. I have employed a local engineering firm to guide those determinations and timing for future infrastructure CapEx, so we can plan accordingly. Welcome to Father Peter Devereaux, LC ± As mentioned earlier this summer, we are temporarily hosting at our Sacred Heart residence the two priests newly assigned to serve the students and faculty at NC State. This week, in addition to Father Joshua West, LC, Father Peter Devereaux, LC joins us, as NC State also gears for the resumption of classes with the 20192020 academic year. Both priests will be with us and in residence at Sacred Heart through the end of October 2019 and will also be assisting us with our 7 am daily Masses at our Cathedral.

Barbara Quinby, M.P.S.

Anne Speicher

It is with a great sadness tempered with the joy of reunion that we inform you that Dr. Dean Brockman, father to Monsignor David Brockman, went to Our Lord this week. Kindly remember Dr. Brockman in your prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul and for Monsignor Brockman and his family.

First Reading Jer 38:46, 810

In those days, the princes said to the king: "Jeremiah ought to be put to death; he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them; he is not interested in the welfare of our people, but in their ruin." King Zedekiah answered: "He is in your power"; for the king could do nothing with them. And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, which was in the quarters of the guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

Ebedmelech, a court official, went there from the palace and said to him: "My lord king, these men have been at fault in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, casting him into the cistern. He will die of famine on the spot, for there is no more food in the city." Then the king ordered Ebedmelech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 40:2, 3, 4, 18

R. Lord, come to my aid! I have waited, waited for the LORD, and he stooped toward me. R. Lord, come to my aid! The LORD heard my cry. He drew me out of the pit of destruction, out of the mud of the swamp; he set my feet upon a crag; he made firm my steps. R. Lord, come to my aid! And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. Many shall look on in awe and trust in the LORD. R. Lord, come to my aid! Though I am afflicted and poor, yet the LORD thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, hold not back! R. Lord, come to my aid! For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

Second Reading Heb 12:14

Brothers and sisters: Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.

The Word of the Lord

 Alleluia Jn 10:27

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Lk 12:4953

Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a motherinlaw against her daughterinlaw and a daughterinlaw against her motherinlaw."

Concern for the Environment and for the Problems of Society “A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. This compromises the very meaning of our struggle for the sake of the environment. It is no coincidence that, in the canticle in which Saint Francis praises God for his creatures, he goes on to say: ‘Praised be you my Lord, through those who give pardon for your love’. Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society.” ....Pope Francis, Laudato Si’. Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered during the academic year to children ages 45 (K and PreK) present at the 10:00 am Sunday Mass. After the Gloria is sung, children will be invited by the celebrant to join a CWL Leader into the sacristy at the Saint Joseph transept. Primera Lectura²Jer 38, 46. 810

Segunda Lectura Heb 12, 14

… Papa Francisco, Laudato Si’.
