New Cathedral School Principal ± In collaboration with our Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mike Fedewa and our Diocesan Director of Human Resources, Gary Rosia, and our interview team members, Christine Bost, Holly Greeves, Ted Mooney, Dawn Neuman and Tim Nichols, who is serving as the Chair for the Committee, I am pleased to announce that Peggy Lane will begin serving as our new Cathedral School Principal, beginning this last week, on August 1, 2019. Mrs. Lane has been serving as the VicePrincipal at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic School in Cary and has previously served as the Principal at Saint Egbert Catholic School in Morehead City, prior to her family moving to the Raleigh area. She brings a great deal of administrative school leadership, as well as practical classroom experience and was the unanimous choice of the search committee to assist us in this important mission of our parish. She is also a native North Carolinian, having grown up as a Catholic in Henderson, NC. Kindly keep Mrs. Lane among your intentions. My renewed gratitude to the search committee members and to Dr. Mike Fedewa for their careful guidance and assistance in this process.

Opening of Our Cathedral Gift Shop ± A year in the making, as of this writing, I am pleased to announce the opening of our new Cathedral Gift Shop last Sunday, June 28, 2019. The hours for the shop for now will be on Sundays, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, for the first few weeks. My great gratitude to the leadership and generosity of Trish Kesler, who will serve as manager for the shop, and to Marguerite Ambrozevitch, owner of In His Name Catholic Bookstore in Raleigh. Both have worked tirelessly to assemble the wide variety of religious goods that will be regularly inventoried in the shop. My gratitude to Russ Elmayan, our Diocesan CFO and to Christine Passaretti Norwood, a Cathedral parishioner and also of our Diocesan staff, Kevin Hemphill, also of our Diocesan IT staff; as well as Barbara Dear and Michelle Connors from our parish staff, for their kind assistance in developing the inventory systems, accounting processes and IT support.

When the shop gets up to full speed, it will be open using these same Sunday hours, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, and expand to 10:00 am ± 2:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. I will be sure to inform you when we begin our regular weekday hours.

Note that items in the shop will be unique to our shop, many specifically depicting the particular saints, whose images are in Cathedral, and the stainedglass windows, which we are blessed to have as sacred art in our Cathedral. Other items will also feature our Cathedral logo, found on our Cathedral cornerstone, which you may recall, was blessed by Pope Francis on December 9, 2015. Other items will be forth coming, available in English and in Spanish for the prayer, devotion and commemorative use of the faithful, whether our parishioners or those making pilgrimage to the heart of the Church at our Cathedral, here in eastern North Carolina.

Parish Council Transition and Gratitude ± With a transition of Marjorie SackYork to serve on our parish Finance Council and Janet Gomez from the Parish Council, my gratitude to J.B. Jett and Christopher Lizak, who each received the next highest number of votes in our recent parish council election process, and who have each graciously agreed to serve as members on this important parish leadership and advisory body. Continue to kindly remember all of our parish leadership bodies among your intentions, as they assist us through their apostolic work in carrying out the mission Our Lord has entrusted to our parish, all on behalf of His Holy Name.

Athletic Fields and Parish Center Updates Athletic Fields Update: As you know, these athletic fields are currently in the permitting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We were expecting the Building Permit from the City of Raleigh this last week of July 29, 2019, but as of this writing, the City of Raleigh has not released it ± several contractors have stated they are waiting as well, so we are not unique in that respect. Construction will be led by Clancy and Theys, who are set to begin directly following when we obtain the permit. The building process will be about 3 months, with completion anticipated in Fall 2019.

Parish Center Update: Info will be forthcoming on the building campaign for the Center, which we have scheduled to begin the weekend of September 8, 2019. Another example of its great need, in trying to schedule space for where to host an upcoming adult formation series, our parish staff asked me, “what should we cancel?” as every room is booked! More to come, but kindly add this effort to your intentions, as it is mission essential for us as a parish as we continue to grow in Our Lord and how He invites us to serve His purposes.

Sacred Heart Campus Improvements ± Through the generosity of some parishioners, parking lot resealing and restriping for all our lots on our Sacred Heart campus took place this last week, as well as beginning an updating of the landscaping in the front door area of our Cathedral School. The school building was also power washed, now looking much brighter, akin to when it was completed 80 years ago. Each of these are updates which reflect our stewardship of these important places in our parish history, now entrusted to our care, and which we now use for all of our prayer, formation and activities associated with the mission of our parish.

Note that as part of the building campaign for the new Parish Center on the Cathedral campus, studies are now being completed for what improvements will be included in that campaign for needed improvements to our existing Sacred Heart campus school building, namely in the area of technology and other basic infrastructure. I have employed a local engineering firm to guide those determinations and timing for future infrastructure CapEx, so we can plan accordingly.

Cathedral Piazza Evergreens, Not So Much ± FYI, as you may have noticed, the evergreens in the large pots/bollards in the Piazza, went the way of all things. This was not because of the heat nor lack of watering, rather a defect pots/bollards themselves. We are researching a solution for these containers, along with new greenery, with the nolongerevergreens now removed.

Celebrating Dad’s Birthday ± This week I am taking some time up home in Chicago for the celebration of my Dad’s 97th birthday, which we will observe on the actual day, August 4th. Kindly keep him in your prayers. I will be returning to Raleigh on August 8th. My special gratitude to Father Pedro Muñoz, Father Jane Kane, Deacon Mike Alig, Deacon Juan Banda and our parish pastoral staff during this time. Page 2 | August 4, 2019

First Reading Ecc 1:2; 2:2123

Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!

Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it, he must leave property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune. For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.

The Word of the Lord

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 90:34, 56, 1213, 14 and 17

R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. You turn man back to dust, saying, “Return, O children of men.” For a thousand years in your sight are as yesterday, now that it is past, or as a watch of the night. R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. You make an end of them in their sleep; the next morning they are like the changing grass, Which at dawn springs up anew, but by evening wilts and fades. R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart. Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days. And may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands! R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For the 5p, 7a an 10a Masses:

For the 12p Mass:

The 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

Second Reading Col 3:15, 911

Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.

The Word of the Lord

 Alleluia Mt 5:3

R. Thanks be to God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Lk 12:1321

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”

The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.

All things are vanity! Ecclesiastes 1:2

If someone were to look at your life, what or whom would they believe you are in love with, or have faith in? In the material society that we live in, many judge others by their possessions. We can even judge ourselves in this way. However, Catholic social teaching explains that human dignity is inherent in every human being and is not predicated on material status.

Use a Clean Detergent You may be using a highphosphate detergent without realizing it. Phosphates aren't necessary and they cause "algae bloom" that can kill lakes and streams. To find out the phosphate content, multiply the % of phosphorus by 3. x Use a lowphosphate or phosphatefree detergent. x Use a little less detergent. x Use a substitute like soap powder or soap and washing soda. x Ask for detergent fact sheet at The Ecology Center 2530 San Pablo Ave. Berkeley, CA. 94702 (from 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth Earthworks, 1989)

This is an important thing to remember as a follower of Jesus, who often didn’t even have a place to lay his head. If he returned today, would we walk past Jesus, a man with little in material assets? How many of us walk past the homeless and count them as less valuable?

… Cardenal Daniel N.
