Celebrating our Second Anniversary of Dedication ± Save the date for the second anniversary of the dedication of our new Cathedral, which we will celebrate with Mass on the anniversary date, Friday, July 26, 2019 at 6:30 pm. A light reception in the piazza will follow the Mass. I know you will join me in welcoming to serve as homilist for this Mass, Msgr. Gerald Lewis, our Diocesan Archivist and former Rector of our Cathedral Parish and also former Vicar General of our Diocese. Msgr. Lewis also served an honorary cochair for the Cathedral project, so it is an honor to welcome him, as we together celebrate the blessings Our Lord grants to us as we are all about His mission, all on behalf of His Holy Name. Formation for the Sacrament of Marriage ± One of the blessings of our parish is to serve well over 100 couples per year who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Marriage, either here at our Cathedral or at Sacred Heart Church or at a home parish of one of the future spouses. In assessing the needs over the last year for formation of these couples, I have drafted a much more robust process, which will be implemented shortly with the assistance of Suzanne Carter, of our Diocesan offices, as well as other volunteers from our parish. Additional administrative assistance is also planned to assist with inquiries, planning and correspondence. This process will involve a sixsession formation process with couples preparing to receive the Sacrament of Marriage, either here at our parish, or doing the formation for the sacrament to be received at another parish out of town. The process as planned is as follows: x Initial Meeting ± The initial meeting will be with clergy, where the couple will be welcomed and introduce themselves, their discernment process of their vocation and will discuss with the priest or deacon the formation process, including liturgical considerations, the role of our parish Wedding Coordinators, liturgical musicians, date and place for the celebration of the liturgy. x Workshops ± Three workshops to be held three times per year on topics which can be addressed along with other couples going through the formation process. One workshop will discuss the sacramentality of marriage, our Catholic Theology of the Body and how it pertains to living the Sacrament of Marriage and our Catholic living of Natural Family Planning. The second workshop will address communication issues and skills, conflict resolution and how to address finances as a couple. Each of these two workshops will be done by couples, who are our Cathedral parishioners and who have training and experience in these areas of formation. x Mentoring ± Always a benefit for couples preparing to receive the Sacrament of Marriage to have an opportunity to discuss it with those who are living the Sacrament of Marriage. Two of these meetings are planned (and certainly others possible, if the couple preparing for the sacrament would so choose) and would be guided with the Fully Engaged inventory resource, which our Diocese uses for the formation process. x Concluding Meeting ± As a second meeting with clergy, this meeting would review the process, address any questions and focus on discussion of the details for the celebration of the liturgy and the rehearsal prior. Additionally, couples meet with our Director of Music, Dr. Mike Accurso, to review the Catholic repertoire for the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage and to plan this aspect of the liturgy and also contact our Chair for our parish Wedding Committee, Mrs. Amy Malouf, who with her team, assist couples with the details to ensure a smooth rehearsal and to help coordinate a prayerful celebration of the liturgy itself. New Cathedral School Principal ± In collaboration with our Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Mike Fedewa and our Diocesan Director of Human Resources, Gary Rosia, and our interview team members, Christine Bost, Holly Greeves, Ted Mooney, Dawn Neuman and to Tim Nichols, who is serving as the Chair for the Committee, I am pleased to announce that Peggy Lane will begin serving as our new Cathedral School Principal, beginning August 1, 2019. Mrs. Lane has been serving as the VicePrincipal at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic School in Cary and has previously served as the Principal at Saint Egbert Catholic School in Morehead City, prior to her family moving to the Raleigh area. She brings a great deal of administrative school leadership, as well as practical classroom experience and was the unanimous choice of the search committee to assist us in this important mission of our parish. She is also a native North Carolinian, having grown up as a Catholic in Henderson, NC. Kindly keep Mrs. Lane among your intentions. My renewed gratitude to the search committee members and to Dr. Mike Fedewa for their careful guidance and assistance in this process. Opening of Cathedral Gift Shop ± A year in the making, I am pleased to announce the opening of our new Cathedral Gift Shop on Sunday, June 28, 2019. The hours for the shop that day will be 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. My great gratitude to the leadership and generosity of Trish Kesler, who will serve as manager for the shop, and to Marguerite Ambrozevitch, owner of In His Name Catholic Bookstore in Raleigh. Both have worked tirelessly to assemble the wide variety of religious goods that will be regularly inventoried in the shop. My gratitude to Russ Elmayan, our Diocesan CFO and to Christine Passaretti Norwood, a Cathedral parishioner and also of our Diocesan staff, for their kind assistance in developing the inventory systems and accounting processes necessary to insure smooth operations. The shop will be open on the Sunday indicated hours, plus 10:00 am ± 2:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Note that items in the shop will be unique to our shop, many specifically depicting the particular saints, whose images are in Cathedral, and the stainedglass windows, which we are blessed to have as sacred art in our Cathedral. Other items will also feature our Cathedral logo, found on our Cathedral cornerstone, which you may recall, was blessed by Pope Francis on December 9, 2015. Other items will be forth coming as we fill out the shop and those items which we will make available in English and in Spanish for the prayer, devotion and commemorative use of the faithful, whether our parishioners or those making pilgrimage to the heart of the Church at our Cathedral, here in eastern North Carolina. Parish Council Transition and Gratitude ± With a transition of Marjorie SackYork to serve on our parish Finance Council and Janet Gomez from the Council, my gratitude to J.B. Jett, who received the next highest number of votes in our recent election process by the parish, and who has graciously agreed to serve as a member on this important parish leadership and advisory body. Continue to remember all of our parish leadership bodies among your intentions, as they assist us through their apostolic work in carrying out the mission Our Lord has entrusted to us as a parish, all on behalf of His Holy Name.

The 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

L(,-$". %# ,/ W%$1 First Reading Gn 18:110a

The LORD appeared to Abraham by the terebinth of Mamre, as he sat in the entrance of his tent, while the day was growing hot. Looking up, Abraham saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground, he said: "Sir, if I may ask you this favor, please do not go on past your servant. Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves under the tree. Now that you have come this close to your servant, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves; and afterward you may go on your way." The men replied, "Very well, do as you have said."

Abraham hastened into the tent and told Sarah, "Quick, three measures of fine flour! Knead it and make rolls." He ran to the herd, picked out a tender, choice steer, and gave it to a servant, who quickly prepared it. Then Abraham got some curds and milk, as well as the steer that had been prepared, and set these before the three men; and he waited on them under the tree while they ate.

Please remember to silence your mobile devices before Mass begins.

Second Reading Col 1:2428

Brothers and sisters: Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church, of which I am a minister in accordance with God's stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God, the mystery hidden from ages and from generations past. But now it has been manifested to his holy ones, to whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you, the hope for glory. It is he whom we proclaim, admonishing everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

The Word of the Lord

"Lord, do you not care One who walks blamelessly and does justice; that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? who thinks the truth in his heart Tell her to help me." and slanders not with his tongue. The Lord said to her in reply, R. He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord. "Martha, Martha, you are anxious Who harms not his fellow man, and worried about many things. nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor; There is need of only one thing. by whom the reprobate is despised, Mary has chosen the better part while he honors those who fear the LORD. and it will not be taken from her." Who harms not his fellow man, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor. . . One who does these things shall never be disturbed. Psalm 15:3,5

As I am writing this issue, there are two pressing concerns becoming more urgent each day. One is our treatment of immigrants at our southern border, made more vivid by the shocking drowning of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his almost two year old daughter, Valeria, and the appalling treatment of children in detention centers. The other concern is our neglect of Mother Earth. Whether or not you believe that the earth is heating up, we, as a society, are complicit in the abuse we have heaped upon her. Pope Francis states, “Everything is connected!” The outward stress signs that we see should cause us to do some inner reflection that we have forgotten our humanity and our instructions to be stewards. In Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth (Golden Sufi, 2016), Llewellyn VaughanLee writes, “Our neglect and dismissal of the sacred within creation are creating an inner wasteland as real as the Tar Sands in Alberta” (300).

Throughout the ancient world, hospitality was the most significant virtue practiced by every culture. In welcoming a stranger, people believed that they may unknowingly be welcoming a divinity in disguise. How would you treat immigrants if you considered them a messenger from God? Have we forgotten the virtue of hospitality as a society? Our unity with each other has been shattered.

Snip sixpack rings and say "no" to plastic straws These are an ocean hazard to birds and other marine life. Six pack holders are virtually invisible underwater and animals can literally suffocate when they get caught with them around their necks or, in the case of plastic straws, lodged in their nostrils. Pelicans can end up with rings stuck around their bills when they dive for fish. Unable to open its mouth, the pelican will starve to death. Before you toss holders in the garbage, snip each circle with a scissors. Pick up any rings or straws you find on the beach and take them with you for proper disposal later. Do not throw these off boats. Do not use plastic straws in restaurants or anywhere else.

Solidarity and Immigrants “In the Church no one is a stranger, and the Church is not foreign to anyone, anywhere. As a sacrament of unity and thus a sign and a binding force for the whole human race, the Church is the place where illegal immigrants are also recognized and accepted as brothers and sisters. Solidarity means taking responsibility for those in trouble. For Christians, the migrant is not merely an individual to be respected in accordance with the norms established by law, but a person whose presence challenges them and whose needs become an obligation for their responsibility. "What have you done to your brother?" (cf. Gn 4:9). The answer should not be limited to what is imposed by law, but should be made in the manner of solidarity ... Saint Pope John Paul II. If you are interested in joining the Justice for Immigrants team, please contact Luisa MartinPrice through [email protected].

Then, there is our treatment of our neighbor, the earth. Vaughan Lee writes, “Nature is not unfeeling matter; it is full of invisible forces with their own intelligence and deep knowing. We need to reacknowledge the existence of the spiritual world within creation if we are even to begin the real work of bringing the earth back into balance. . .Instead we are caught within a contemporary C!$ #%$ C$!,(%': L!-1!,% S( consciousness that focuses on the individual self, no longer even Everything is Connected: How We Care for Our Common aware of our deep bond to the sacred within creation” (296). Primera Lectura Gen 18, 110a

Salmo Responsorial ± Salmo 14, 23ab. 3cd4ab. 5

R. ¿Quién será grato a tus ojos, Señor? R. ¿Quién será grato a tus ojos, Señor? R. ¿Quién será grato a tus ojos, Señor? R. ¿Quién será grato a tus ojos, Señor?

R: Gloria a ti Señor Jesús.

«¿Qué has hecho de tu hermano?» (cf.Gn4, 9). La respuesta no hay que darla dentro de los límites impuestos por la ley, sino según el estilo de la solidaridad.…Santo Papa Juan Pablo II.
