Prayers for Children Preparing for and Received First Communion ± Continuing this weekend on Saturday, May 11th at the 5 pm Mass and on Sunday, and then next weekend, on May 19th at both the 8:30 am and 1:30 pm Masses, our children who have been preparing this year to receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist for the first time, will do just that. Kindly keep them in your prayers, as well as their parents, that our children will learn to savor Our Lord’s Real Presence and know how He nourishes the gift of Life here and unto Life eternal. As Our Holy Father recently stated on his return from His Apostolic Journey to Bulgaria, each time we receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, ultimately you and I are making a decision for Life ± a great thought which deserves our reflection, especially as we prepare for Mass weekly, if not daily. Make a decision for Life!
Our Lady in this Month Dedicated to Her and Mothers ± One of the many titles attributed to and honoring Our Lady is Mary, Mother of the Church. As we honor this weekend, all those who have been blessed with the vocation to be mothers, also ask Our Lady’s prayers for these women ± living or now alive with Our Lord for all eternity ± who have served to nurture us in life and many, who have nourished the gift of faith we so enjoy today. Also, as Our Mother, consider making it a regular practice to arrive early for Mass to visit the shrine of Our Lady in the north transept and to pray the rosary individually or in a group ± a wonderful gift to us as Church to assist us in focusing on our prayer relationship with God through the mysteries of our Catholic faith. In so doing, what is Our Lady accomplishing in and through the gift of faith? What She always does, pointing us in the direction of Her Son, Our Lord Jesus. “Do whatever He tells you,” She states in sacred scripture ± good advice as we seek to grow more deeply in the spiritual life and in communion with Our Lord, with the help of Our Lady, Who is our mother and Mother of the Church.
Prayer for those Graduating ± This weekend will mark many graduating from college or university and either continuing into graduate education or beginning their respective working career. A time of transition, also accompanied frequently by more intense discernment of a vocation of life. That was certainly the case with me, as I graduated from university and having recently become a Catholic, I also began several years of discernment of how it is that I would serve Our Lord. Interestingly, it was not to be in the graduate work I did in Immunology nor the work in that field that followed. Rather, that discernment of my vocation was certainly taking place through all my work in that field, leading me to begin more formal discernment and formation in seminary of a priestly vocation. The point is that prayers are needed for graduates as they similarly discern how it is they are begin called to serve Our Lord through a vocation of life, whether as a single person, those married, as a religious or as a deacon or priest. We are all called into one of those respective vocations and our discerning of which is oh so important, as through it, will we not only serve Our Lord’s purposes for our life, but also, because it is Our Lord’s purposes for our life, we will find true happiness. Thus, pray for those graduating.
Parish Council Elections ± Last weekend, the elections process for membership to our Parish Council began, continuing also this weekend. Ballots will be available in the pews and online on our Cathedral website. The election is for 8 seats to serve on the Council, which serves as an advisory body addressing strategic planning issues with respect to the mission of our Cathedral Parish. The Chair also sits with our parish Finance Council Chair on the Diocese Cathedral Advisory Committee, which ensures coordination and planning of the Cathedral parish with initiatives of our Diocese.
My gratitude to all who proposed members of our community and all who have so generously offered their time and talent to serve on our Parish Council. Kindly take the time to review the biographical information of those offering to serve and then complete the ballot and return it, either to the ballot box in the narthex or by mail to the parish office or online on our parish website. As in all things with respect to the mission of Our Lord in and though our parish, your participation is important, so thank you for taking the time to do so.
Holy Thursday Care for Those Most in Need ± As you may recall, part of the Holy Thursday portion of the Sacred Triduum liturgy is the Mandatum, (in the Latin, “command” or “mandate”), reminding us all to implement in our apostolic work, the words of Our Lord in the Gospel for the liturgy, “As I have done, so you must also do.” As part of that expression, I asked that the offertory for that night of the Triduum be given in its entirety to those most in need that we serve through our parish ministries, namely through the Door Fund and through Habitat for Humanity. You offered over $3200.00 for that work, which through Habitat assists in home ownership for the poor and through the Door Fund, provides direct assistance to those most in need in the Raleigh area. My great gratitude for your generosity and most especially as you embrace this an other opportunities to reflect the generosity of Our Lord in your life and with the Church, our preferential option for the poor.
2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Results ± In living stewardship as a way of life, always important to plan out how we assist in the various aspects of the mission of Our Lord, on a parish, Diocesan and in those occasions of extraordinary need, such as last Fall when we assisted those so deeply affected by the hurricanes and subsequent flooding.
The Diocesan portion of that assistance is each January through early Spring, when we participate in the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, which funds over 30 ministry priorities which our Bishop has set, including for the work of Catholic Charities throughout eastern North Carolina and support for the formation of seminarians to serve as priests for our Diocese.
Through your generosity, again reflecting the generosity of Our Lord to you, I am very pleased to announce that not only have we reached our goal of $186K, but that we have together exceeded it by the largest percentage of any parish in our Diocese, for a total to date of nearly $327K given by our parishioners to support the mission of Our Lord through our Diocese! On behalf of Bishop Luis Zarama, all those at Catholic Charities, our seminarian, Nick Rapkoch and all those in priestly formation, as well as all others assisted through the BAA each year, thank you for assisting us in the mission of Our Lord ± so important to make a priority through our stewardship as a way of Life!

First Reading Acts 13:14, 4352
Paul and Barnabas continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered the synagogue and took their seats. Many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God.
On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us, I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.”
The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region. The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them, and went to Iconium. The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

Second Reading Rev 7:9, 14b17
I, John, had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
Then one of the elders said to me, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
“For this reason they stand before God’s throne and worship him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of lifegiving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
The Word of the Lord
AlleluiaJn 10:14
R. Thanks be to God.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep, and mine know me. R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Jn 10:2730
Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”
The Gospel of the Lord R. Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ.
For the 12p Mass:
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; serve the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful song. R. We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
Know that the LORD is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. R.We are his people, the sheep of his flock.
The LORD is good: his kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. R.We are his people, the sheep of his flock.

I learned something new the other day. It comes from a book titled, Words of Wisdom (Novalis, 1999) by Fr. Walter Vogels. The book is centered on the Wisdom literature of the Bible that has been called “the neglected side of biblical faith” (16). In liturgy, we more often hear texts from the Law and the Prophets in which salvationhistory theology is presented. Wisdom literature does not belong here. Vogels says Wisdom writings could be considered as creation theology.
The winds of March point to the power of God's Spirit working in us. We need to listen and respond to the gentle breezes of the Spirit; but will we, or will we be too distracted? The rebirth of spring reminds us of the energy of nature so that we ask ourselves whether we waste or wisely use energyelectricity, oil, gas, etc. Can we and should we continue to use nonrenewable fossil fuel, often with accompanying air pollution, at the rate we do? Or will the environmental ills we cause today call us in the future as a society to use wind and solar energy? To join the new Care for Creation at HNOJ, contact:
[email protected]
Vogel writes, “In the creation theology of the Wisdom literature, God has put humanity in charge. Individuals have to use their minds and reflect on their experience to determine for themselves what ought to be done. . .Seejudgeact is how the wise function” (18). He states, “In salvationhistory, God tells the human being what to do and how to act, since God is in charge” (17). “[In creation theology] God trusts people because God has endowed humanity with minds to think (Genesis 2:19). People may make the wrong decisions. We grow not only by our successes butsometimes more quicklyby our mistakes” (19). In the scripture above, both theologies are working. God makes us a light and we, in turn, will help create by seeing, judging and acting [instrument].
Opportunities to Help Volunteers are needed at Oak City Cares which is a new multi services center for people experiencing homelessness. It will open in April and is operated by Catholic Charities in partnership with Wake County, the City of Raleigh, and the Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness, and 15+ partner agencies which will provide services onsite. Volunteers are critically needed to provide hospitality, family recreation activities, administrative support and more during the week and weekends. To learn more about volunteering, please click on the “Volunteer” link at www.oakcitycares.org
Acts 13:47
When God asks us to create a more just world because God is just, we are to use our minds and experiences to make this happen. We do not have to wait for God to tell us what specifically to do, it is already written on our hearts and we have only to see the unjust problem, discern the correct path, and respond. Last week, I talked about Pope Francis’ distress for the earth that his encyclical Laudato Si’ addresses. Have you read the document? Do you feel the urgency of his call to respond? Our common home is crying out. Vogel writes, “In the Wisdom literature, God does not determine history, people do. . .After God created the universe and other living beings, as his last work on the final day, God created humanity and entrusted the world to them. . .Humankind is now in charge of its world (Genesis 2:15, Psalm 8)” (17).

Primera Lectura Hch 13, 14. 4352
R. Aleluya, aleluya. Yo soy el buen pastor, dice el Señor; yo conozco a mis ovejas y ellas me conocen a mí. R. Aleluya.
R: Gloria a ti Señor Jesús.
