Morning Daily Mass Reminder at our Cathedral ± The 7:00 am morning Mass, celebrated during the Season of Lent on Tues-

days and Fridays at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, has returned, scheduled for Tuesday and Friday mornings at 7:00 am. About 30 40 of the faithful joined us during Lent, so plan to pray with us on the way to work or to begin your day, a beautiful way to dedicate the dawn and the hours of the day ahead to Our Lord, receiving the new Life only He can give us in His Word and His Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist.  

Prayers for Children Preparing for and Received First Communion ± Continuing this weekend on Sunday, May 19th at both

the 8:30 am and 1:30 pm Masses, our children who have been preparing this year to receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist for the first time, will do just that. Kindly keep them in your prayers, as well as their parents, that our children will learn to savor Our Lord’s Real Presence and know how He nourishes the gift of Life here and unto Life eternal. As Our Holy Father, Pope Francis recently stated on his return from His Apostolic Journey to Bulgaria this last week, each time we receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, ultimately you and I are making a decision for Life ± a great thought which deserves our reflection, especially as we prepare for Mass weekly, if not daily. Make a decision for Life!  

Prayer for those Graduating ± Beginning last weekend, many have been graduating from college or university and either contin-

uing into graduate education or beginning their respective working career. It is a time of transition, also accompanied frequently by more intense discernment of a vocation of life. That was certainly the case with me, as I graduated from university and having recently become a Catholic, I also began several years of discernment of how it is that I would serve Our Lord. Interestingly, it was not to be in the graduate work I did in Immunology nor the work in that field that followed. Rather, that discernment of my vocation was certainly taking place through all my work in that field, leading me to begin more formal discernment and formation in seminary of a priestly vocation. The point is that prayers are needed for graduates as they similarly discern how it is they are begin called to serve Our Lord through a vocation of life, whether as a single person, those married, as a religious or as a deacon or priest. We are all called into one of those respective vocations and our discerning of which is oh so important, as through it, will we not only serve Our Lord’s purposes for our life, but also, will we find true happiness. Thus, pray for those graduating.  

Transitions, Gratitude and Prayers ± Some personnel news this last week: I have received and accepted the resignation of Dr.

Janice Jett as our Cathedral School Principal for this academic year and part of the prior. I join you in expressing great gratitude to Dr. Jett for her contributions to Catholic education and formation during her time serving at Cathedral and assure her of prayerful best wishes as she begins an academic position much closer to her family home.   In collaboration with our Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Mike Fedewa and our Diocesan Director of Human Resources, Mr. Gary Rosia, I have initiated the search process for candidates who will be well suited to serve our parents in the Catholic education and formation of their children, as well as their development as future leaders in the Church and the greater community. With elections upcoming for the School Improvement Team and it is my intent to ask representatives from this newly elected consultative body for their input on the top candidates for the position of principal. Kindly, keep this process among your intentions and look for future updates. 

Building Phases Update ± The soccer field and other play field construction on our Cathedral campus is currently in the permit-

ting process with the City of Raleigh, having received all of the necessary Diocesan approvals. We received word late last week that this process should be complete by midJune 2019, after which construction will begin. With the decision to place artificial turf on the soccer field portion of the play areas to be constructed, its use should be begin in the Fall 2019 when construction is completed.   One of the longstanding issues on our Sacred Heart campus on which many have commented is the poor condition of the parking lot that is used not only for parking, but also for play during the school day, when in session. Through the generosity of a longstanding friend, repaving of that lot, restriping and repair to other areas of the parking areas will begin after the conclusion of the school academic year. I will also be consulting with our School Improvement Team members for consensus on other infrastructure items for the Sacred Heart campus which be added to Phase II of the building process. As announced, these will be included with the parish center building (which includes the gym) on the Cathedral campus. As I mentioned, the funding development work on this phase will begin in the late Summer, early Fall 2019. 

Parish Council Elections ± Last weekend, concluded the elections process for membership to our Parish Council. My gratitude to all who proposed members of our community and all who have so generously offered their time and talent to serve on our Parish Council. As of this writing the ballot totals are being completed. Look for a posting of the results next weekend.  

New Stained Glass on the Way ± Through the great generosity of two parishioners, more stained glass for our Cathedral church

is on the way for one of the aisle windows, this one depicting the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. Each of the windows rectangular windows depicting a scene from sacred scripture are original stained glass hand crafted in the late 1920’s by Paula Himmelsbach Balano, the first woman to have a stained glass studio in the United States. We have over 50 of these windows, but not all have been sponsored and thus not yet restored and then installed. The work is done at the Beyer Studios in Philadelphia, one of the finest studios in the USA for the restoration and repurposing of these fine works of sacred art, now serving to inspire a new generation of those encountering Our Lord in the beauty of stained glass. After Paul and Barnabas had proclaimed the good news to that city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch. They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, "It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." They appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith. Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia. After proclaiming the word at Perga they went down to Attalia. From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished.  And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

CPO FeedaFamily Food Drive | May 1819 Catholic Parish Outreach will collect the grocery bags this weekend that were handed out last weekend. If you were too busy to shop, a donation of $30 feeds a family for 1 week! Make your check payable to Catholic Parish Outreach and give it to a volunteer at the CPO truck during the food drive collection. CPO is also in need of children’s books for preschoolers in the clothing ministry. CPO is the largest food pantry in the Triangle; in 2018 CPO served on an average 8,200 people / month and distributed 2.8 million pounds of groceries to residents of Wake, Franklin and Johnston counties. Would others recognize us as disciples of Jesus by how we love? Do we reflect the love of our Creator by our charity? As Christians, these are questions that we should make part of our daily experience. The Jesuits have the mantra, “see, judge, act.” The term “judge” in this instance has more to do with discernment of a situation through personal reflection. When you experience or encounter an injustice, how do you respond? When the opportunity presents itself to do a work of charity, do you turn away or lean in? This weekend is our spring food drive for Catholic Parish Outreach. CPO, a Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh program, is celebrating 41 years of serving residents of Wake, Franklin, and Johnston counties. It has become the largest food pantry in the Triangle providing emergency food assistance. CPO does more than just give out food. The food pantry gives hope to its clients by treating them with dignity and respect along with showing that volunteers come together with one purpose  to help them. CPO also provides a food stamp outreach program, and a resource list of other assistance throughout the community. It also offers, when possible, small children's clothing and baby items, such as formula and diapers. CPO is a model throughout the state of how to serve the less fortunate in our communities. Opportunities to Help Volunteers are needed at Oak City Cares which is a new multi services center for people experiencing homelessness. It will open in April and is operated by Catholic Charities in partnership with Wake County, the City of Raleigh, and the Partnership to End and Prevent Homelessness, and 15+ partner agencies which will provide services onsite. Volunteers are critically needed to provide hospitality, family recreation activities, administrative support and more during the week and weekends. En aquellos días, volvieron Pablo y Bernabé a Listra, Iconio y Antioquía, y ahí animaban a los discípulos y los exhortaban a perseverar en la fe, diciéndoles que hay que pasar por muchas tribulaciones para entrar en el Reino de Dios. En cada comunidad designaban presbíteros, y con oraciones y ayunos los encomendaban al Señor, en quien habían creído.



Atravesaron luego Pisidia y llegaron a Panfilia; predicaron en Perge y llegaron a Atalía. De ahí se embarcaron para Antioquía, de donde habían salido, con la gracia de Dios, para la misión que acababan de cumplir.



Al llegar, reunieron a la comunidad y les contaron lo que había hecho Dios por medio de ellos y cómo les había abierto a los paganos las puertas de la fe.

¿Cómo sabe la gente que eres un discípulo de Jesucristo? Algunas personas prefieren mantener su fe en secreto y rara vez mencionan su creencia en Jesús. Otros son más vocales y fácilmente le dicen a la gente que son cristianos. Para Jesús, hay otra manera de reconocer si uno es un discípulo. Les dice a sus amigos que todos sabrán que son discípulos si se aman los unos a los otros. El amor al que Jesús nos llama no es solo un amor terrenal. No se trata solo de hacer cosas buenas por las personas o incluso de tener pensamientos positivos sobre otras personas. El amor de Jesús es amor divino. En pocas palabras, Jesús se hizo humano para que podamos llegar a ser divinos. Estamos llamados a mirar al mundo, a las personas y a nosotros mismos como lo hace Dios. Esto requiere compasión incondicional y mucha misericordia y perdón. No podemos hacer esto solos. Es por eso que el Cristo resucitado permanece con nosotros, especialmente a través de la Eucaristía, para ayudarnos a convertirnos en quien Él es.
