PASTOR’S Reflection

B

reaking Open the Word of God:

Dear brothers and sisters, we continue to commemorate the glorious resurrection of the Lord Jesus. This Sunday, we are called to remember what happened after Jesus rose from the dead. Today in the first part of the Gospel, we hear about the appearance of Jesus to his disciples, which took place on the first day of the week, which is a Sunday. The apparition took place on the evening of the same day on which Jesus had risen. It is important to note the day of the week in which these events were instituted by the Lord Jesus to understand how, in the early days of the Church, the Sabbath was replaced by Sunday. That night, living in fear of the authorities, the disciples had gathered in a house and closed the doors. Suddenly, Jesus appeared among them. According to the Gospel of Luke, in the beginning, the disciples were startled and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. Then Jesus said to them, "Peace be with you." And he showed them his hands and his side. This was proof that Jesus was truly nailed to the cross. Finally, the disciples realized the reality that Jesus was truly before them, and they rejoiced, and all their fear disappeared. Again Jesus said to them: "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so do I send you." With these words, the Lord officially establishes the Church through His disciples to perpetuate His work of salvation. Through this delegation, we remember the words that Jesus had spoken during his ministry on earth. "As you Father sent me into the world, so have I sent them into the world. Having said this, Jesus breathed on the disciples and told them: "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." In these words, is the fulfillment of the Promised Paraclete, the sending of the Holy Spirit. With this passage, we are sure that the Sacrament of Confession was instituted on earth by Jesus Christ himself. It should also be mentioned that power over sin is also exercised in the Sacrament of Baptism. Sacred Scripture reveals that three things happened on Easter day. First: Jesus rose from the dead, very early Easter Sunday. Secondly, Jesus had not yet ascended to the Father. Thirdly, in the evening, He gave the Holy Spirit to the world. We also know through John’s account of the gospel that Thomas was not with them for Jesus’ first appearance to the disciples. When he later rejoins the disciples, he didn’t believe them when they said they had seen the Lord. The only way he would believe would be touching the wounds of Jesus with his own finger. A week later, again on a Sunday, while the disciples were gathered behind closed doors with Thomas, the Lord Jesus appeared

again and told them: "Peace be with you." Because of the emphasis that happened on a Sunday, it is clear that in the time of John, the first day of the week was the day when the first Christians of the Church gathered to celebrate the liturgy. Today the Gospel of John concludes telling us that Jesus said: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." These powerful words of Jesus were not intended only for the small group that was present in the house. It is also addressed to all Christians of all times, including the faithful of today.

W

alking together as brothers and sisters:

My brothers and sisters, this week, as we reflect on today's readings, let us reflect on our role in the Church that Jesus founded. What do we do as individuals to promote the growth of the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in us? Reflecting on this, let's make a commitment to how we are going to promote growth in the Church during this next year. Some may choose to evangelize their children. Others may wish to guide new converts by getting involved in the RCIA program. All these actions are worthy of the grace of God for the benefit of all. May the grace of God be with each of you as you choose your calling and move forward with the Spirit of Christ. The Lord is Risen, Alleluia! Fr. José Gerardo Alberto, MSpS

REFLEXION del

M

A WAITING HARVEST

Vocation Awareness

“I Think You Could Have a Vocation” As a former vocation director and now seminarian formator, it disturbs me to hear someone say about a young man, “I think John could have a vocation.” Of course, he has a vocation! Everyone has a vocation. What they mean, of course, is that John could be called to be a priest or perhaps join a religious order. But what that person should have said is, “I think John might be called to the vocation of priesthood or religious life.” It does a disservice to the person and to the Church to use incorrect language as if only priesthood and religious or consecrated life are true vocations. Language is important, as it can either illuminate or obfuscate the truth. Clear teaching about the theology of vocations is critical. I think most people, including most Catholics, have a very vague idea about what a vocation is. They have heard the word mentioned at Mass, usually with reference to priests. They have seen “vocational schools” advertised, where people go to gain a skill to get a job, maybe as a nurse, computer technician, or mechanic. Many think that “vocation” does not apply to them since they are already married and working. Some people simply have no idea. I am reminded of a conversation in Acts between St. Paul and some Christian disciples he had met in Ephesus. St. Paul asked. “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They answered him, “We have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit!” (Acts 19:2) Likewise, I think many Catholics have never taken the idea seriously. This is a problem. So what is a vocation in the first place? From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.

This week please pray for Matthew Newland from Redmond, WA. Matthew is a seminarian with the Archdiocese of Seattle and He is taking Theology I classes at Mundelein Seminary.

We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them!
