reaking Open the Word of God:

Dear brothers and sisters, in the first reading, we hear the Word of God from the First Book of Kings in the Old Testament. We hear that the Lord commanded Elijah to anoint Elisha, the son of Shaphat, as the prophet who would take his place. Elijah in obedience to the Lord, set out to find Elisha. When Elijah found him, Elisha was plowing. Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha as he passed by him. While this seems to be a strange thing to do, in those days, it meant two things. First of all, the mantle represents the personality and rights of its owner, Elijah meant to acknowledge Elisha as his own disciple by throwing his mantle on him. Secondly, because a camel hair mantle was part of the official dress of the prophets, throwing it on another person meant a formal investiture with the authority that comes from being initiated into the prophets. From this action, Elisha perceived that God was calling him to become a prophet through Elijah. Leaving the oxen, Elisha ran after Elijah, asked permission to say goodbye to his parents and accepted the call of God to become a prophet.

Samaritans did not live together. Jesus, knowing that his ministry was nearing its end, set his eyes on Jerusalem, where he had to go to be rejected and face death as it was written in the Old Testament prophecies. Because Jesus set his eyes on Jerusalem, the Samaritans did not receive him. Making a distinction between the Jews and the Samaritans, they did not love their neighbors as they loved themselves. They had not learned the meaning of true discipleship.

editando la Palabra de Dios

Estimados hermanos y hermanas, en la primera lectura, escuchamos la Palabra de Dios que tiene su origen en el Primer Libro de Reyes que se encuentra en el Antiguo Testamento. Escuchamos que el Señor le encomendó a Elías que ungiera a Eliseo, el hijo de Safat, como el profeta que tomaría su lugar. Elías en obediencia al Señor, se dispuso a encontrar a Eliseo. Cuando Elias encontró a Eliseo, él estaba arando. Elías al pasar junto a Eliseo, le arrojó el manto. Si bien esto parece ser algo extraño de hacer, en esos días, significaba dos cosas. Antes que nada, el manto representa la personalidad y los derechos de su dueño, su lanzamiento sobre Eliseo significaba que Eliseo ahora pertenecía a Elías. En segundo lugar, porque el manto de la camisa de pelo era parte del vestido oficial de los profetas, lanzarlo sobre otra persona significaba una inversión formal con la autoridad que proviene de ser iniciado a formar parte de los profetas. De esta acción, Eliseo percibió que Dios lo estaba llamando a través de Elías para que se convirtiera en un profeta. Dejando los bueyes, Eliseo corrió tras Elías, le pidió permiso para despedirse de sus padres y aceptó el llamado de Dios para convertirse en profeta. De este ejemplo, podemos ver el verdadero discipulado. Eliseo no dudó en responder al llamado de Dios. A través de la acción de Elías, Eliseo creyó que Dios lo estaba llamando e inmediatamente dio su "sí". Su obediencia sincera significaba deshacerse de todas las riquezas que poseía. A través de la fe y el Sacramento del Bautismo, los católicos que nos hemos convertido en miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, también nos hemos convertido en siervos y esclavos de Jesús. Como Eliseo aceptó vivir una vida santa sometiéndose a la Voluntad de Dios sin dudar, los católicos también somos llamados a ser santos al permanecer firmes y no someternos al yugo de la esclavitud. Porque Cristo nos ha liberado del yugo de la esclavitud. Hemos sido llamados a vivir por el espíritu, el espíritu de adopción que hemos recibido por medio de Cristo. "Porque todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios son hijos de Dios". (ROM. 8:14) Al nacer de nuevo en Cristo, hemos recibido el don del Espíritu Santo que mora en nosotros. A través de la guía del Espíritu Santo, que inclina nuestros nuevos corazones hacia toda justicia, tenemos una esperanza viva de

completar nuestro viaje en la tierra. A través del fuego santificador del Espíritu Santo, tenemos una esperanza viva de alegría y paz eternas en el Reino de Dios. En el Evangelio de hoy, escuchamos que Jesús fue rechazado por los samaritanos. Los judíos y los samaritanos no convivían juntos. Jesús sabiendo que su ministerio se acercaba a su fin, puso sus ojos en Jerusalén, donde tuvo que ir para ser rechazado y enfrentarse a la muerte como estaba escrito en las profecías del Antiguo Testamento. Debido a que Jesús puso sus ojos en Jerusalén, los samaritanos no lo recibieron. Haciendo una distinción entre los judíos y los samaritanos, no amaban a sus vecinos como a ellos mismos. No habían aprendido el significado del verdadero discipulado.

Mis hermanos y hermanas que caminamos juntos como comunidad, este es el mensaje de hoy para nosotros de parte de Dios. En el verdadero discipulado, no hay vuelta atrás. No hay vuelta atrás a las formas mundanas. Como amigos de Cristo, se espera que avancemos continuamente al crecer en nuestras vidas espirituales a través de la gracia de Dios Padre y el poder santificador del Espíritu Santo y en el nombre de Jesús Nuestro Señor. Esta semana, consideremos esta verdad de acuerdo con nuestra llamada o vocación, ya sea la vida religiosa, la vida matrimonial o la vida soltera. ¿Estamos creciendo espiritualmente en nuestra llamada o vocación? ¿Estamos siendo leales a Dios? ¿Estamos siendo verdaderos discípulos? Y si algunos encuentran que hay mucho que desear en sus vidas, pueden aprovechar esta oportunidad para cambiar sus corazones mientras la gracia de Dios está trabajando en ustedes esta semana.

Vocation Awareness

Generous Single Life in Christ Part I It is a plan of God that some men serve the Church by remaining single, dedicated lay Catholic who generously serve in some particular area of need. In my experience, this is one of the most difficult and frustrating vocations to discern. The Catechism mentions that people find themselves in this vocation, though it might not have been their preference. We must also remember the great numbers of single persons who, because of the particular circumstances in which they have to live—often not of their choosing— are especially close to Jesus’ heart and therefore deserve the special affection and active solicitude of the Church, especially of Pastors. CCC #1658. Why is this vocation so difficult to discern? I think there are several reasons. A true vocation must involve some type of permanent commitment. You see this on all other vocations. In marriage, for example, the church offers a sacrament that joins the souls of a man and woman together in the marriage bond for life. In priesthood, the sacrament confers an indelible mark on a man’s soul. A mark which configures him permanently to Jesus Christ. In religious life, a man or woman make perpetual public vows of the Three evangelical counsels.

The permanent commitment in each of these three vocations serves to cement the person in a state in life, especially when life becomes difficult. Firmly anchored in their vocations, God helps individuals to grow in holiness and to help get others to heaven. As a woman once said to me, “Father, I love my husband and I consider him and my children my greatest blessings. But they are also my greatest crosses!” Cemented into her vocation of marriage, this woman was describing the challenges of family life that were helping her to grow in a personal holiness, even though the sacrament of marriage is primarily ordered to the salvation of the husband and children. But what about a person who is called to the generous single life in Christ? The aspect of permanent commitment is more nebulous.

Catholic Community Service’s will soon open Clare’s Place in Everett, WA, which will provide 65 units of permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless and disabled/vulnerable individuals, including 5 veteran units, 10 units for youth (18 to 24), and 50 units for adults. Clare’s Place provides housing options for individuals that have difficulty qualifying for housing in the private market and who need a supportive environment in order to sustain housing stability. It will be professionally staffed 24/7 days a week, providing needed supervision. We are in need of items such as plates, cups, pots & pans, kitchen and bath towels, glasses, cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies, bedding, lamps, coffee pots, toasters, etc. Donating to Clare’s Place helps to make each apartment a fully stocked home for people who own nothing.
