PASTOR’S Reflection

B

reaking Open the Word of God:

Dear brothers and sisters, the gospel today presents to us one of Jesus’ most famous parables. We could take it at face value and then we could easily conclude that the Lord is calling attention to the double standards that the “scholar of the law” lives by. The old “do as I say, not as I do”. He approaches Jesus with a loaded question “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” To which Jesus responds with a question of his own. The scholar’s answer comes from the Old Testament, the Law, the Torah, and it was the right answer for those living in the Old Covenant. When the scholar again tries to trick Jesus in asking who his neighbor is, then we hear the beloved parable of the Good Samaritan. On the surface, the parable condemns those who, possibly like the scholar, do nothing to help those in need if it interferes with their observance of the law. The priest and the Levite in the story would have made themselves impure, thus excluding themselves from the observance of the Sabbath, so instead they choose to not help the person on the road. But help comes to him in the unlikely person of a Samaritan. Jews and Samaritans did not get along. Yet this Samaritan gives his time and money to make sure the person is well cared for. So “neighbor” here is both the person in need on the side of the road, and the Samaritan who is supposed to be their enemy. Quite often we fall into this trap ourselves. We want to follow the rules to the extreme of not seeing the face of Jesus in our neighbor in need, and not only material need… there are so many people in our own circles in need of our love, our attention, a listening ear, an understanding heart, a compassionate heart. We are called to be like the good Samaritan and not turn a blind eye on anybody who is in need. The message of the Gospel is completed by the other readings today. In the First Reading we hear Moses tell the Israelites that not only do they need to keep what is written in the book of the law (Torah), but they need to “return to the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul.” That is to say, LOVE God. In the Psalm we will sing Turn to the Lord in your need and you will live. An exciting promise, we need to keep our eyes on the destination (Eternal life), and the road will become clear (holiness). Paul tells the Colossians that in Christ all things are reconciled to God. So our example must be Christ. Another explanation of the parable of the Good Samaritan presented by several

Church Fathers explains that the person on the side of the road is the people of Israel, or we today. The robber who attacks him is the evil one, and the Good Samaritan is Jesus. The wine and oil used for curing the person on the road represent Jesus’ blood poured for our salvation, and His mercy, rescuing all of us so we all have access to eternal life in the presence of the Father.

W

alking together as brothers and sisters:

We are the Church, the mystical body of Christ. He is the head of the body, so we are all one in Him. Paul tells in another passage that when one member suffers, the whole body suffers. When one member rejoices, the whole body rejoices. Let us think this week about ways I can be present to someone in need around me. Don’t go very far looking for the need, start close by and see if someone in your immediate circle is in need of prayer and support. Let us be like the Good Samaritan and open our eyes to the needs of the world, our reward will be great in heaven. Continue praying for the brothers MSpS in retreat, and all of us priests guiding them as they continue to discern God’s call for their lives.

A WAITING HARVEST

Vocation Awareness

Generous Single Life in Christ Part III

I counseled this man to use the process of elimination. God clearly was showing him his vocation by excluding the others. Now he needed to work and pray to find the specific, generous work within single life to which God was calling him. And he did find it, in service to the very poor. Today, he is clearly fulfilling all the requirements of a vocation. He is serving others in a way that I believe was pre-determined by God, building up the Kingdom, helping others go to haven, and growing in holiness in the process! And he has had to cement him-self into his work, finally realizing that this is where God wants him. He is flourishing in his correct particular vocation. Please understand that living one’s single life selfishly is not a vocation. We all know people who do not marry or do anything requiring a permanent commitment, not because of a call to generous single life, but because of their desire to always do what they want, when they want, and how they want. There is a prevalent trend (especially in the U.S.) for young people to grow up keeping all of their options open, making money and spending it on themselves. Being a selfish, self-centered bachelor is not the same as living a generous single life for Christ. It will bring a person great sadness and lead to despair. From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen

“God has created me to do some special service; God has committed some work to me which has not been committed to another, I HAVE A MISSION.” Bl. John Henry Newman

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life. We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them! With the Heart of Jesus

In the Eucharist we find all the good of the Church. In it we have the certainty that God is faithful to His promise and stays with us until the end of time. In our visits and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we experience the closeness of the good shepherd, the tenderness of His love, the presence of a faithful friend. We all experience this large support in our lives provided by faith and our personal and intimate dialogue with the Lord in the Eucharist.
