PASTOR’S Reflection

B

reaking Open the Word of God:

Dear brothers and sisters, in today's readings, a very special verse of 2 Cor. calls my attention: 5:17 which says: "Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come." This passage summarizes God’s Divine Plan of God for humanity. This plan which started with the prophecies of the Old Testament, and is fulfilled through Jesus Christ, explains how we have become a new creation of God. Very few Christians really know and understand that if someone is in Christ, there is a new creation in him or her. Very few understand what really happens at the Sacrament of Baptism, when we die in Christ, are buried in Christ and our resurrection is a new creation in Jesus Christ. In Genesis 2:7 God tells us: " God formed the man out of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." In other words, God created a physical body, and gave it a "human spirit". God created man with a soul, with his self-consciousness, a physical body and a human spirit to sustain the life of the body. Because a body without spirit is dead. As Jesus said, "it is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is useless." God created man in his image and likeness. And God saw that everything he had done was good. After God completed the creation of all things, He placed Adam in the Garden of Eden and commanded him: " You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From that tree you shall not eat; when you eat from it you shall die. " (Gen. 2: 16-17) As we all know, Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the fruit the tree of knowledge, and thus sin entered the world. At that time, Satan became the "prince of the world". Adam and Eve lost their original nature of holiness in

the likeness of God. In punishment for their disobedience, God expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden and said, " you shall eat bread, until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return." This is where we begin to discover the mystery of the creation of humanity. When God said that man was dust and to dust he would return, God meant that all of Adam's descendants would experience death. In today's Second Reading taken from the Second Letter to the Corinthians we hear: "Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come." (2 Cor 5:17). Everything has become new because in addition to receiving the Holy Spirit, we have received a new spiritual nature in Christ, a new human spirit for the soul, now free from original sin, we all qualify to receive the inheritance of the Kingdom of God, after physical death. "All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself. " Brothers and sisters, our new human spirit, free from original sin through the Sacrament of Baptism, is a gift from God, it is the good seed. As Jesus said in the parable of the weeds, "He who sows the good seed is the Son of man, the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the Kingdom." "You have been born again, not from a perishable seed, but from an imperishable seed, through the living and lasting Word of God." "This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God." Knowing this, we can now

understand why we are ambassadors of Christ. And in the name of Christ, God is making his call through us, so that all may seek reconciliation with God.

W

alking together as brothers and sisters:

Dear brothers and sisters, I invite all of you this this week to reflect on the Word of God that we have heard today. We are being reminded of how important it is that everybody receives the Sacrament of Baptism so that they too can be reconciled with God. Ask yourself: Do I know someone who is not baptized? If you know of someone who is not baptized, as an ambassador of Christ, you have the obligation to spread this good news. It is your duty to convince those around you, whether they be family members, friends, coworkers, that they need to be baptized. It is urgent that they receive the free gifts from God through baptism.

Conchita, Tell Us about Your Life The miracle of the healing of Jorge Treviño Jorge Treviño was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on December 7, 1960. In 1993, despite being 33 years old, Jorge began to grow taller (up to 6 inches) and to gain weight. It was during this time that his muscles would involuntarily contract while doing some physical activity, or even at rest. Accompanied by very intense and painful cramps, with the result of torn muscles and sprained ligaments in the legs. From 1996 to 2004 his symptoms became more frequent and severe. From 2004 to 2006 he spent most of his time in bed or a wheelchair, with his left side cramped and in excruciating pain. The doctors could not make a diagnosis. That February, Marcela, a friend of the couple, gave Jorge a picture of Conchita. Marcela also talked to Jorge about Jesus Maria, as a place of peace and prayer. Upon receiving the picture, Jorge told his wife that he loved the way Conchita's image gazed at him. Since Jorge had this picture of Conchita, he remembers asking her to intercede for his health. On May 15, 2008, Jorge, Cecilia, and Marcela went to San Luis Potosi. They stayed at the Missionaries the Holy Spirit's house. During dinner, he told all those present the intention of his trip: to ask, through the intercession of Conchita, for his health. Jorge prayed before the Blessed Sacrament and asked for the miracle of his healing. Jorge then visited Conchita's garden. The pilgrims returned to Monterrey on May 17, and in a few days he was hospitalized. On Thursday, May 22, 2008, at about 7pm, Jorge, his wife Cecilia and two other friends were in the hospital room. Jorge asked his wife for the image of the Cross of the Apostolate and the holy card of Conchita, which Marcela had given him earlier. He fell asleep. Soon, Marcela and Cecilia noticed that Jorge, in his sleep, opened his left hand, which had not been open for years. Surprised, Cecilia took out her cell phone and shot some pictures. Jorge continued to move and then they heard him mumble the “Our Father”. Even the family doctor and specialty internist came into the room. Looking at Jorge's legs straight and without contractions, his arms over his chest and still moving normally, the doctor stared for a moment and then ordered to cancel all treatment. Jorge woke up at 11:40 p.m, he was moved to tears; he could not believe it. He checked his entire body: hands, legs, feet, neck, and face. Then, to the astonishment of all, he rose to his feet by himself and went to the bathroom without any assistance, He recounted having received a visit from Conchita in his sleep, and praying with her the Our Father. The next day, Jorge could take a shower alone. He was completely cured. He left the hospital walking without any assistance.

A WAITING HARVEST

Vocation Awareness

Vows versus Promises Diocesan priests do not take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. These are called the Evangelical Counsels and they are vowed by priests, brothers and sisters and monks who belong to religious orders. The Evangelical Counsels are specifically ordered to holiness; they are meant to facilitate total surrender of one’s life to God. Diocesan priests are also called to live the Evangelical Counsels —because they are ordered to holiness, and thus applicable in every vocation—but they do not take vows in the strict sense of the word. At their ordination, they make promises to live celibately for the sake of the Kingdom, meaning they promise not to marry. They promise to pray for God’s people every day through the Divine Office. And they promise obedience to their bishop and his successors. From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen

“If we had faith, we would see God hidden in the priest like a light behind the glass or like wine mixed with water.” St. John Vianney, The Curé of Ars Patron Saint of Priests

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.

This week please pray for Andrew Hollands. He is a seminarian with the Archdiocese of Seattle and is taking Theology I classes at Mt Angel Seminary in Oregon.

We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them! T y p o l o g y Rediscover the Sign of the Cross

by Cassie Sadie Part II

Imagine how different our lives would be if we took this prayer more seriously! If we truly strived to live for in His Name. It would change everything. St. Cyril of Jerusalem, who lived in the fourth century, said “Let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ; but though another hide it, openly seal it upon your forehead, that the devils may behold the royal sign and flee trembling far away. Make then this sign at eating and drinking, at sitting, at lying down, at rising up, at speaking, at walking: in a word, at every act.” Devils fleeing and trembling? That’s what I’m talking about, right?? St. John Vianney continues this theme, calling it “the most terrible weapon against the Devil.” Who knew this prayer was such a secret weapon?? I wish I had earlier in life, that’s for sure. He goes on to explain that “above all [we should make the sign of the cross] when we are tempted.” My personal favorite quote of his is “He, who when tempted makes the sign of the cross with devotion, makes hell tremble and heaven rejoice.” I’ve been amazed in my own life by the strength and graces I’ve been given to fight temptation just by doing the sign of the cross. I can’t recommend it enough in your daily battles. So here’s my challenge, for you and for myself: let’s take the sign of the cross more seriously. Let’s pray it with reverence and our whole heart, not just going through the motions but rather, thinking about what we’re really praying and proclaiming. Let’s pray it with boldness and unashamedly, not caring who sees but instead proudly proclaiming the truth of our faith and our salvation and identity in the cross of Christ. And let’s live for our God, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
