PASTOR’S Reflection

B

reaking Open the Word of God:

Dear brothers and sisters, when reviewing the three readings for mass today, we realize that they have a common denominator. The three readings speak of loyalty to the Lord Jesus. Beginning with today's second reading from the Book of Revelation, which tells us that in his vision John heard the voice of many angels, the living creatures and the elders surrounding the throne. There were thousands upon thousands. Through this description, we can guess that this meeting included all the creatures of the universe, all the human beings of the past, present and future, and all the celestial beings were present as well. All were singing and through their song, they manifested their loyalty to the Lamb of God. They were recognizing the almighty authority of the Lord Jesus over them. In their humble service, they professed that all power, wealth, wisdom, power, honor, glory and blessing belong to Jesus. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles echoes the loyalty of the disciples of Jesus. We heard that the captain and the Temple guards went to the Temple to apprehend the disciples who were preaching there. In this passage of Sacred Scripture we confirm that the Temple is the appropriate place for apostolic teaching. Within God’s Temple, the apostles did the work of the Lord. The apostles were imprisoned and condemned for continuing to preach in the Name of Jesus. Prior to this time, they had already been warned not to preach the teachings of the Lord Jesus in the Temple. The Jews wanted to stop their preaching because of their own guilt after having crucified Jesus. They did not want anyone to spread the knowledge of what Jesus had done, and they did not want it to be known all over the earth, they were trying to hide the truth. Because of their loyalty to the Lord Jesus, the apostles were flogged and then released. In those days, when someone was flogged on his back, it meant being whipped 40 times. I have no doubt that with all the flesh torn as a result of being whipped, a great pain must have followed. While most of us would not be happy after being flogged, Peter and the apostles rejoiced. They rejoiced because in their eyes, they were considered worthy to have suffered dishonor in the Name of Jesus. Surely their suffering guaranteed them an additional treasure in Heaven. In today's reading of the Gospel of John, we hear Jesus asking Peter on three different occasions: "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" And three times, Peter affirmed his loyalty to Jesus, promising to serve him, even until death. The triple question of the Lord which demanded a triple profession of love from Peter was in response to the triple denial of Peter. Without a doubt, Peter knew that he was being reminded that on three previous occasions he had denied

knowing Jesus. Knowing of the transformation of Peter's heart since the Resurrection, Jesus believed him and transferred his authority to him. When Jesus said three times, "Feed my sheep," he was commissioning Peter to lead the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that He had instituted on earth. At that time, Jesus gave his own pastor's office to Peter. At that moment, Peter’s fate of following the Good Shepherd with all the implications, even to the ultimate sacrifice of his own life. When Jesus told Peter to cast the nets on the right side of the boat, this symbolized the authority of the High Priest who leads the Church. When the apostles obeyed Jesus' advice, this echoed the complete submission of the ministers of the Word of God who are called to be fishers of men.

W

alking together as brothers and sisters:

Dear brothers and sisters, thank you for your presence today and your desire to receive the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, with this we are publicly showing our loyalty to Jesus. Through the reception of the Sacrament of the Eucharist, we profess our faith in the Divine Presence of Jesus manifested in the Bread and the Wine. With our presence here today, we are saying to Jesus: "My Lord Jesus, all authority is yours, You are my Lord and my God, Guide me, I humbly obey Your Will."

REFLEXION del

M

A WAITING HARVEST

Vocation Awareness

Our Primary Vocation is Holiness Happiness is doing the will of God. Interestingly, that could also be the definition of holiness. The primary and universal vocation of every person in the world is to be holy – to become like Jesus Christ. Christ-likeness is the only success recognized by God. Or, as St. Bonaventure said: “If you learn everything except Christ, you learn nothing. If you learn nothing except Christ, you learn everything.” Interestingly, the people who take holiness seriously are also the people who experience the most happiness here in this life. Why? Because our holiness is preparing us for the supreme happiness of heaven, the true destiny for which we were made, not some glimmer of happiness which we might experience here. Holiness directly leads to fulfillment and human flourishing, and the entire concept of vocation encompasses both. The first vocation of every baptized person is to become a saint. While that may seem daunting, the good news is that this vocation does not require any discernment. The Church and Sacred Scripture both tell us clearly and definitively that holiness is everyone’s primary vocation.

The church on earth is endowed already with a sanctity that is real though imperfect in her members. Perfect holiness is something yet to be acquired. Strengthened by so many and such great means of salvation, all the faithful, whatever their condition or state – though each in his own way – are called by the Lord to that perfection of sanctity by which the Father himself is perfect. CCC #825 Discerning and accepting one’s vocation is like building a pyramid. It must be constructed from bottom up. A man will not be able to know and accept his secondary or particular vocation—marriage or priesthood, for example – until he has been seriously striving towards his primary vocation of holiness. Some have tried to do it in reverse, and almost always have failed. From the Book “To Save a Thousand Souls” Fr. Brett A. Brannen

O Jesus, Our Eternal Pastor, Deign to look with merciful eyes Upon this part of your loving flock. Lord, we need a large number of priests, and men and women consecrated to the religious life. Multiply vocations, And sanctify more and more our priests, And those consecrated in the religious life.

This week please pray for Br. Jorge Haro, M.Sp.S. Brother Jorge is taking Theology II classes at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX.

We ask you all this through the Immaculate Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, your sweet and holy Mother. Jesus give us priests according to your heart. Jesus, savior of all people, save them, save them! Grief, Loss, Loneliness Have you, or do you know someone who has experienced a loss or is alone and would benefit from a parish member visit?
