reaking Open the Word of God:

Brothers and sisters, during this Lenten season, the Church reads again and relives the great events of the history of salvation in the liturgy. This is why, it is important that catechesis helps the faithful to open themselves to the spiritual understanding of the history of salvation as the liturgy of the Church reveals it and allows us to live it. Today the passage from the Gospel of Luke tells us about the triumph of Jesus in the desert. Guided by the Spirit in the desert, the Lord Jesus resisted the three temptations that were presented to him. Through Jesus and with Him, we are reminded that we too can succeed in our battle against evil. According to the tradition of the Church, during the season of Lent, we as believers are called to repent of our sins. We are called to remember often the triumph of Jesus. We are called to live triumphantly our faith in Christ as baptized children of God. We are called to advance and shine for our obedience, our charity towards others, through prayers and sacrifices, all out of love for God. Today we hear also the way Satan tempts Jesus the first time. He asks Jesus to manifest His power by turning a stone into bread. But Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” (Phil 2, 6-8) The answer that Jesus gave to

the devil is the most interesting. Jesus said: "One does not live by bread alone." If we are going to associate this response with the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, this implies that the Bread of Life, the Body of Christ, is insufficient in itself to ensure our salvation. Since words without actions are dead, faith without works is also dead. By the grace of God, our works are manifestations of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us and sanctifies us and alking together as moves our living faith towards a brothers and sisters: perfect likeness with our Lord Jesus Christ. Conchita, Tell Us about Your Life Conchita tells us about her life of solitude After coming home from the Monsignor Ibarra’s funeral, I knelt in front of the tabernacle and with a broken heart I offered myself completely to Divine Will. That’s when the last stage in my life began, the solitude of the twilight years. Upon the death of her director, on February 19, 1917, the Lord Himself had announced to Conchita: "There remains for you to live the last stage of your life imitating My Mother and thus obtaining graces for the Works of the Cross. Troubles will befall them, as well as My Church, but the Works will triumph, and they will your crowning achievement. Have courage, be brave! Carry on your mission, imitate the virtues of Mary in her solitude, virtues which brought about Her union with Me, Her obedience to My will and Her wish to reach heaven." Her external apostolate diminishes, and her life becomes centered around prayer and immolation. She will know the solitude of the soul, but she accepts it like she always accepted God’s Will. This stage made her advance spiritually in union with God, but she kept the interest in her family’s affairs always. Her heart was always faithful to all the family gatherings, parties, celebrations and the like. Years later, in 1931, her sons’ businesses are threatened by the Great Depression, and she begs God to get them out. Her prayers are heard, and her sons came out of a desperate situation. After her last son's marriage, she noted sorrowfully in her Diary: "Now all is over for me. God gave me nine children. He has taken away all nine. May He be blessed! Two religious, the others dead or married, all, one after another have been snatched from my maternal heart. Ten beds, including that of my husband, are now empty and here I am now alone. Yet no, not alone, I have Christ who does not die, who does not part from me, and who will never abandon me.” Thus Conchita lived on earth, ever faithful to her husband, her children and God. Those last twenty years of her life helped her identify herself more with Mary Most Holy, and her life after the Lord’s Ascension, and she wrote intensively, especially with words for ministerial priests.

Conchita: Cuéntanos tu vida Conchita nos cuenta sobre su vida en soledad "Al regresar de las exequias de Monseñor Ramón Ibarra, con la frente apoyada contra el Sagrario, el corazón destrozado, me ofrecí a la voluntad divina. Entonces comenzó para mí la gran "soledad" y, con ella, la última etapa de mi vida". Al morir su director, el 19 de febrero de 1917, el Señor mismo le había anunciado a Conchita: "A ti te queda por recorrer la última etapa de tu vida, imitando a María y alcanzando gracias para las Obras. Vendrán tempestades para ellas como para la Iglesia, pero triunfarán siendo tu corona. Ánimo y valor que sólo he hecho continuar mi voluntad en ti. Hazte cargo de tu papel, imita las virtudes de María en su soledad, que aumentó su unión Conmigo, su adhesión a mi voluntad y sus ansias por el cielo". Va disminuyendo su apostolado exterior, y su vida se centra en la oración y la inmolación. Conocerá la soledad del alma, pero la acepta como aceptó siempre la voluntad de Dios. Este período la hizo avanzar en la unión divina, y sin embargo la encontramos más humana. Siempre atenta a los aniversarios de familia, a las fiestas, reuniones con sus hijos. Pasados los años, en 1931 les llega la depresión a los negocios de sus hijos, le suplica a Dios que los salve. Sus oraciones fueron escuchadas y sus hijos salieron de situación tan desesperada. Después del matrimonio de su último hijo, escribe: “Todo ha concluido para mí. Nueve hijos me dio Dios y nueve me quitó ¡Bendito sea! Religiosos, muertos y casados, pero todos uno por uno arrancados del corazón maternal. Diez camas he quitado con la de mi marido y ya estoy sola, ¡sola! Pero no, lo tengo a El que ni se muere, ni se va, ni me deja jamás”. Conchita pasó por la tierra siempre fiel a su esposo, a sus hijos y a Dios. Fue en esos últimos veinte años de su vida cuando se identificó más con María Santísima, y su vida después de la Ascensión de Jesús, y cuando escribió prolíficamente, especialmente recomendaciones para los sacerdotes de parte de Jesús.

Estimados hermanos y hermanas, durante este tiempo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia relee y revive los grandes acontecimientos de la historia de la salvación en la liturgia. Por esto es importante que la catequesis ayude a los fieles a abrirse a la comprensión espiritual de la historia de la salvación como lo revela la liturgia de la Iglesia y nos permite vivirla. Hoy el pasaje del Evangelio de Lucas nos habla del triunfo de Jesús en el desierto. Guiado por el Espíritu en el desierto, el Señor Jesús resistió las tres tentaciones que se le presentaron. A través de Jesús y con Él, se nos recuerda que nosotros también podemos triunfar en nuestra batalla contra el mal. De acuerdo con la tradición de la Iglesia, durante la temporada de Cuaresma, nosotros como creyentes estamos llamados a arrepentirnos de nuestros pecados. Estamos llamados a recordar con frecuencia el triunfo de Jesús. Estamos llamados a vivir triunfalmente nuestra fe en Cristo como hijos bautizados de Dios. Estamos llamados a avanzar y brillar por nuestra obediencia, nuestra caridad hacia los demás, a través de las oraciones y sacrificios, todo por amor de Dios. También hoy escuchamos en el Evangelio cómo Satanás tentó a Jesús por primera vez. Le pidió a Jesús que manifestara su poder al ordenar a una piedra que se convirtiera en un pedazo de pan. Pero Jesús, "aunque estaba en la forma de Dios, no consideraba la igualdad con Dios como algo que debía ser explotado, sino que se vació a sí mismo, tomando forma de esclavo, naciendo a semejanza humana. Y al encontrarlo en forma humana, se humilló a sí mismo. Y se hizo obediente hasta el punto de la muerte, incluso la muerte en una cruz ". (Fil. 2: 6-8) La respuesta que Jesús le dio al diablo es la más interesante. Jesús dijo: "Uno no vive sólo de pan". Si vamos a asociar esta respuesta con el Sacramento de la Sagrada Eucaristía, esto implica que el Pan de Vida, el Cuerpo de Cristo, es insuficiente en sí mismo para asegurar nuestra salvación. Como las palabras sin acciones están muertas, la fe sin obras también está muerta. Por la gracia de Dios, nuestras obras son manifestaciones del Espíritu Santo que mora en nosotros y nos santifica y mueve nuestra fe viva hacia una perfecta semejanza con nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

En la segunda tentación, el diablo mostró a Jesús en un instante todos los reinos del mundo. Luego prometió darle toda su gloria y autoridad si Jesús lo adoraba. Jesús respondió: "Está escrito: “Adora al Señor, tu Dios, y sirve solo a Él”. En esta respuesta, Jesús reconoce a Dios como el que nos ha sacado del desierto de Egipto, y la importancia de seguir los mandamientos de Dios. Servirlo sólo a Él es lo más importante, quien intenta servir a dos maestros, no sirve a ninguno. Que la gracia de Dios esté con todos ustedes mientras buscan sus corazones con gran sinceridad y se permiten ser transformados en Cristo.

Estimados hermanos y hermanas, durante la próxima semana, reflexionemos sobre las acciones de Jesús que fue guiado por el Espíritu en el desierto. Así como Jesús resistió las tentaciones en el desierto, nosotros también estamos llamados a resistir las tentaciones diarias que se cruzan en nuestro camino y buscan destruir nuestra comunión con Dios. Estamos llamados a arrepentirnos de los pecados pasados, a ser santificados en Cristo, a realizar obras espirituales por medio del poder del Espíritu Santo, a resistir toda vana gloria que nos separe del amor de Dios que desea grandemente ver el cumplimiento de nosotros como sus hijos adoptivos en Jesús. An Indelible Character: Thou Art a Priest Forever I remember seeing a television show when I was a boy about a parish priest working in a small town in the 1920s. He was a humble, faithful priest and he tried very hard to take care of his parishioners, who made up almost the entire town. Ironically, the mayor of the town and his wife were extremely antagonistic towards the priest and the Catholic Church, even though they were Catholic, the mayor was constantly opposing the priest’s initiatives and the poor priest could not understand why. At the end of the movie, the mayor had a heart attack and he was close to death, the priest was called to administer what was then called the sacrament of the Extreme Unction. When the priest went to anoint the palms of the man’s hands, which is a required part of the ritual, the sick man turned his hands over for the priest to anoint the back. The priest looked up in amazement! By this action, the mayor was saying that he was also a priest—a priest who had left the priesthood and gotten married many years before. When a priest is ordained, the palms of his hands are anointed with sacred chrism. This is why when a priest is receiving the sacrament of the Extreme Unction (now called Anointing of the Sick) his hands are always anointed on the back. The show ended with the priest realizing why

the mayor had always been so oppositional and hateful. He prayed that his brother priest would have peace in Heaven. After all, a priest is a priest forever. The Catholic Church teaches us that priests are signed with an enduring special character at their ordination. The sacrament of Holy Orders, like Baptism and Confirmation, confers an indelible seal on the soul that can never be erased, repeated, or conferred temporarily (#CCC 1582). This is some times called an “ontological change,” or a change of being. When you get to heaven, you will see some men there with this mark on their souls and you will immediately know that they were priests on earth (CCC #1581-3) The mayor in the that television show was still a priest, even though he had ceased functioning as a priest. T y p o l o g y Every Phase of Lent You’ve Ever Felt By Emily Clare Burt

Ah, Lent. The lovely time when we Catholics choose to intentionally suffer for a whole 40 days, in order to draw closer to our suffering Savior, Jesus. A lot can happen in those 40 days, but usually, it goes a little something like this: It all starts with Mardi Gras. . . also known as “Fat Tuesday.” If you’re anything like me, you deck out and go ham on all the prepackaged junk food. In other words, you eat a bunch of Hawaiian rolls in your car on the way home from the grocery store (based on a true story. I regret nothing). You then quickly realize that this means it is time to officially decide what you are committing to this Lent. Then comes Ash Wednesday. You wonder what your ashes are going to look like. Will it be a nice opaque cross, or will it look like you got into your mom’s eyeshadow as a toddler? Stay tuned. It’s a few days into Lent, and things are going well! You’ve stuck to your commitment, and are feeling extra #blessed. All those days of fasting have made you hungry, so you sink your teeth into a Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. Half-way into lunch, you look at your phone, and on the top of your screen you see that fateful word: “Friday. "The days tick by, and they get harder and harder as they pass. You start to get worried about your commitment, but it’s okay! You convince yourself that it’s just a phase and that this is going to be your best Lent ever! … Right? You break. You realize you can’t do this without the grace of God. You realize that you are a needy little human being, who is incapable of holiness without God. So, you ramp up your prayer life, take a deep breath, and start again with your head held high. You realize that just because you have the grace of God on your side, doesn’t mean that your sacrifice will be easy. But that’s what it’s about! You can unite your small sufferings with the cross in preparation for Easter. And just like that, it’s almost Easter! And, as sanctifying as Lent has been, let’s face it, you can’t wait for it to be over. Holy Week is right around the corner and humanity’s Savior is about to conquer all death and sin, AND resurrect from the dead!! The day is here! It’s Easter Sunday!! He is risen!! You go to Mass, and the joy of the Lord’s Resurrection fills your church to the brim. You are so thankful for your journey during Lent and how you grew in love and faith for the Lord. Order “Into the Desert: a Journey of Sacrifice and Temptation” as a guide to your Lenten journey. Meet Jesus in the desert and confront the battle of temptation with the power of authentic sacrifice.

With the Heart of Jesus

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Oklahoma State University in 1984, studied pre-theology at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana and earned degrees in theology and biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Ordained a priest July 14, 1989, in Tulsa, at Holy Family Cathedral, he served as pastor of three parishes in Tulsa, held several diocesan leadership positions and was a faculty member of the Pontifical North American College in Rome. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle by Pope Francis on April 6, 2017, and was ordained by Archbishop J. Peter Sartain on May 31, 2017.

This will be more than a performance, but also a reverent way to participate in the Paschal Mystery, The Stations of the Cross. Witness a Mother’s suffering, dignity and great love! Hear the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, his betrayal, his temptation, his unconditional love on the Cross and more scenes with costumes from that era! FREE ADMISSION Friday, April 5, at 7pm or April 6, Saturday 8pm Good Friday, April 19, is a day of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter. (Code of Canon Law, 1249-1252) Fasting is to be observed by all eighteen years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their sixtieth birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all fourteen years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

SEAS Pro-Life Ministry DAY ONE – Developing Baby Spiritual Adoption Program At the moment the father’s sperm and mother’s egg unite, a new and unrepeatable human being comes into existence, complete with his own unique set of DNA. Although he is only one cell, everything about this little person is already present: color of eyes, blood type, the height he will grow to be, color of hair – everything! He will play a role in his family and his community – a role only he can play! Nothing is added after conception to make him a complete human being. He already exists; all he needs is nourishment, a safe, warm environment, and most of all – love. His parents do not even know he exists yet. Pray for them to safely bring their baby to birth so he can fulfill the mission God has for him. MONTH ONE – Developing Baby Spiritual Adoption Program

Your spiritually adopted baby has been quite active over the past month. Already your baby is 10,000 times bigger than at conception. Your baby has developed the foundations of her brain, spinal cord, and nervous system by the 20th day. Her heart began to beat on the 21st day, pumping blood through its own circulatory system and the blood type can be different from her mother’s. Your baby is most vulnerable during the next month of being aborted. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of her mother to give her the most precious gift of all - - the gift of life.
