United as One Flock

ave you ever watched a herd of animals as they journey toward a destination? It’s remarkable that their every move seems to be in sync with the entire group. Whether it’s a herd of cows, sheep, or even a flock of geese, the group seems to move as one body. Yet the key aspect that holds these groups together is their willingness to struggle—even suffer— to remain united as one body.

Christians will be reunited one day with our great king and eternal shepherd.

In this reading, we see a dispute developing between Paul and the Jews over the offer of the Gospel to the Gentiles. Annunciation Church Daily Masses At Annunciation: While Fr. Eugene continues to recuperate, all efforts are being made to ensure Mass coverage for our Saturday Vigil and Sunday schedule. Our priests from neighboring parishes have been very generous in this regard, given their own responsibilities in their home parishes. It is challenging to find priests for our daily Masses, so, unless a priest volunteers for a daily Mass, we are holding a Communion Service at our daily Mass times. For those wishing to attend Mass, following is a listing of daily Masses (Monday through Friday) at neighboring parishes (Masses are in English, unless otherwise noted): †Holy Angels—6:30 and 8:15 a.m. †Immaculate Conception—8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (Spanish) †Santa Teresita Chapel—6:15 and 9:30 a.m. †St. Luke—8:00 a.m. Parish Council Election News: Thanks to those parishioners who participated in last weekend’s nomination process. The nominees have been contacted and those who have agreed to move forward with the election process will be attending an Evening of Discernment this Monday, May 13th. We ask that you pray that the Holy Spirit will guide these individuals in their personal decision-making process. Sample ballots will be inserted into next weekend’s bulletins to allow you to acquaint yourselves with those whose names are being submitted for election consideration. Elections will be held on the weekend of May 25-26. Parish Directory Distribution: The Parish Pictorial Directories are available for pick up at the Parish Office during business hours For those who attended a photo session, a free directory is available to you. If you did not have your photo taken, but wish to purchase a directory, they are available for a cost of $10.00 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Monetary Scam Circulating Within Parish: A number of Annunciation parishioners have received what appears to be a text message from Fr. Eugene or Fr. Michael, requesting a favor from them. This “favor” always involves giving money or gift cards, of which the sender says they are in need. Please be advised that this is a scam and a hoax and is not a legitimate request from either priest, or anyone else associated with Annunciation Church. Do not respond to these texts in any way—simply delete them. Thank you.

Father Callanan’s Thank You And Mailing Address: Several parishioners have requested a re-print of Fr. Callanan’s mailing address. It is: Father Michael Callanan, Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, P.O. Box 305, Mothers’ Day Novena Mayrknoll, NY 10545-0305. We are told that his condition is somewhat improved, 12:00 p.m. SPANISH Fr. 4th Sunday of Easter ¿Sabia Usted? You will find this information in English posted in the bulletin board located in the vestibule of the Church. We encourage you to take notes as you reflect on this week scriptures / homily:

FORMED members can watch this week’s short “Opening the Word” VIDEO at: AnnunciationChurch.FORMED.org With friends or family, reflect on the following questions:  The presenter, Jules Miles, says that this week’s Gospel is all about “who are the real followers of Jesus?” According to the presentation, who are the Christians? And who are the shepherds of the flock today?

 The Gospel reading indicates that the sheep follow in the example of their shepherd, Jesus. Elsewhere in the Gospels, specifically in John 10:11, Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” How can we lay down our lives for our fellow Christians each day?

 How will these sacrifices help us to grow in Christian unity?

P

RAYER: Let us begin our time of prayer by placing ourselves in this scene in Jerusalem with Jesus teaching his disciples about following him as the good shepherd. Imagine that Jesus has just said that no one can take his flock out of his hand. How does his willingness to lay down his life for his sheep make him a trustworthy shepherd who will never lose his sheep? Just as Jesus laid down his life for his flock, you now recognize this call extends to you as well. Ask Jesus to show you how you can lay down your life for others, seeking to deepen Christian unity. esús dice: “mis ovejas escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco y ellas me siguen”.
