Dear Parishioners, Every so often, I like to call attention to the fact that our parish has a cemetery! For those who are new or simply may not know – way back in 1922, the parishes of St. Margaret’s in Minnetonka and St. Mary’s in Hopkins merged to form St. Joseph’s. St. Margaret’s Church was located just off the corner of Shady Oak Road and Bren Road and had a cemetery, which is now our cemetery. Our cemetery ministry is an important part of our ministry to our members, as our ministers strive to comfort those who mourn, honor the memory of our loved ones who have died, and provide a quiet and serene place to pray for them. It is open to all registered members of St. Gabriel – please contact Martha at the parish office if you would like more information. –Fr. Liekhus

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The achievement of the late 1960s and early 1970s in enriching the “euchology” or “words of thanksgiving” available in the Church’s prayer is important on many levels. Ecumenically, it means that the Latin Rite now reflects the wealth of the East in having more than one prayer available to the Church. Pastorally, it actually acknowledges the place of the assembly in prayer, which is particularly clear in the Masses with Children. In fact, the traditional prayers of the Eastern Church served as models for our new prayers. In the East, what we call the Eucharistic Prayer is called the anaphora, and there are three main families of anaphora. Each family has a different “recipe” for arranging the usual parts of these prayers. All anaphora have “intercessions” included, but the Churches of Antioch place them toward the end of the prayer, Alexandria prefers them at the beginning before the “Holy, Holy,” and Syria puts them at the very end. One branch of the Syrian family is unique in not mentioning the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The Roman Canon we once prayed exclusively has some connection with the Alexandrian family, but once the signal for creativity was given, all the wealth of every prayer tradition was on the table, and our Sunday Mass has been greatly enriched. —Rev. Parish News SMALL GROUP MEDITATION

July 30, 2017, Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kings 3:5, 7-12; Psalm 119; Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 13:44-52 For the last three Sundays, we have heard the parables from the thirteenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew. This section of the Matthew’s gospel is called the “3rd Discourse”, or the third set of Jesus’ teachings to his disciples and the larger community. Why did Jesus use parables to teach his disciples? In the series of study guides, Ignatius Catholic Study Bible: Commentary, Notes & Study Questions, Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch explain that Jesus used parables for two purposes: to teach his followers about the divine mysteries of God and his kingdom, and as judgment on those who rejected him (Matthew, p. 41). Those who opened their hearts to Jesus as Messiah and Lord learned with deep understanding who he was and what he was promising. Those who closed their hearts were kept in the dark, which as we know, led to sorrow, senseless suffering and ultimately, eternal separation from God. Today’s parables encourage us to never stop searching for the treasure that is hidden in a life surrendered to the Lord. By the world’s standards, a person who sells all that he or she has with joy, to buy a field with a hidden treasure in it, is insane. By the world’s standards, a jeweler who sells everything for just one pearl is crazy. But as we learn in the last two sayings, we are not going to be judged by the world’s standards at the end of time. We will be judged by how much we strive for righteousness, for right relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters. As Jesus explains, God has chosen us for heaven, but leaves it to us to choose his way, his truth and his life. What is your choice? Solomon chooses a great pearl, asking for the wisdom to lead the kingdom of Israel. What do you think helped Solomon make such a wise choice? How do you prepare yourself to make wise choices according to God’s will and not the world’s?  How much is the kingdom of heaven worth to you? What would you be willing to give up to grow closer to God and his desire for your salvation? What is holding you back from taking the next step in surrender to God? What do you need to take that next step?  In several of the parables, Jesus describes the final judgment, (Matthew 13: 24-30; 47-50; 52). How can we understand these as a cause for hope, not fear? Describe places in our world where you see goodness and growth in virtue among the “weeds” and “bad fish”. Why would God allow the two to grow together? What does that say for us and for our fellow humans?

Youth Formation, School & Parish News LISTEN TO YOUR DREAMS God visits Solomon in a dream, and the scripture story nowhere tells us that Solomon awoke to have this conversation with God! So, still in his dream, Solomon answers God’s question about what he desires most, and God grants his request for wisdom in abundance. In our waking hours, we are much distracted by work, home, family, traffic, entertainment, and many worries. When we try to think about what we really want out of life, we have trouble even imagining what that might be. But deep inside, our real longings dwell, known to God and to the Holy Spirit.
