Dear Parishioners,

I mentioned a few weeks ago at Mass that you’ll be receiving more information about the acre of land we’re looking to sell and the thought process behind it. That information was mailed to every parishioner on Friday, so keep an eye out for it! Along with that information will be a simple feedback form you can return to let parish leadership – and ultimately the archbishop – know whether or not you think it’s a good idea to sell the land in order to get close to covering the $3.3 million of work to be done on our campuses. The results of that survey will be shared in the bulletin and will be included in any materials we provide the archdiocese as part of the approval process. If the feedback shows the parish doesn’t think this is a good idea, our pastoral and finance councils will take a hard look at how to move forward and what other options we have. Mass for the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Saturday, November 3, 2018. The 4:30 p.m. Mass at the St. Joseph campus will be celebrated in remembrance of all the St. Gabriel parishioners who have died in the last year. STEWARDSHIP-SHARING OUR TREASURE WITH THE COMMUNITY “World Missions” is the October 2018 recipient Witnessing Faith through the Hearts of Youth On World Mission Sunday, Catholics around the world unite to recommit to their missionary identity. This celebration and appeal of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports our brothers and sisters in over 1,100 mission diocese worldwide. This year’s theme, Witnessing Faith through the Hearts of Youth, echoes the energy and joy of youth serving the poor and elderly in mission diocese as witnesses of the Gospel message. This year, as an example, the activities of St. Vincent de Paul Society at the mission parish of Jesucristo Resucitado in Venezuela are highlighted. Please offer prayers and gifts of support on World Mission Sunday to aid those witnessing the faith in mission dioceses like the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This diocese is an example of one receiving support from the World Mission Sunday appeal. Please be a generous as you are able and help support over 1,100 mission dioceses worldwide. You will help efforts to raise up and train new leaders who will minister to people in their own language. You will provide material support to the poor and suffering lifting up individual dignity through the love of Christ. MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH SERVICE & SOCIAL SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3 Middle School youth (grades 5-8) are invited to participate in a service & social Saturday November 3, 1:00- 8:00p.m. We’ll meet in the cafeteria of the school building at the St. John campus at 1:00 and then carpool out to some homes in the Hopkins area to rake lawns. Please bring your own rake, work gloves, and water bottle! After raking for a few hours, we’ll head back to St. Gabriel’s for a pizza and movie night! Cost for this event is $5.00. Please let Cindy know you’re planning on coming by October 29. You’ll need to have a signed parent permission slip, too—forms are available at the back of the churches or on the website. Friends are welcome also—they must be in 5th – 8th grade and bring a permission slip and the fee with them. Adults are needed to make this a success!! We need several adults to help with driving and chaperoning. 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Oct. 21, 2018) (Is 53:10-11; Heb 4:14-16; Mk 10:35-45) James and John asked to sit alongside Jesus in his glory. Jesus does not exactly condemn them for wanting this. It was an expression of the enthusiasm they had for the mission. But Jesus gently tempers their enthusiasm by pointing out that it will not be that easy. “You do not know what you are asking” he tells them. This is similar to the message of the Gospel of four weeks ago (Mark 9:30-37) where Jesus said “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Instead of addressing their request directly, Jesus again directs their thoughts to how they should be humble in the service to God and those in need. In the letter to the Hebrews Paul tells us to “confidently approach the throne of grace.” Paul wanted to assure the Hebrews that grace and mercy are available to them through Christ. He wanted them to see Jesus as their friend who helps them to overcome sin, not just as their accuser who convicts them of sin. The reading from Isaiah is more of the “suffering servant” theme. How wonderful it is for us that Jesus, the perfect realization of the suffering servant, offers us mercy and relief from this burden of guilt! • If you don't feel confident about approaching the throne of grace, what can you do to gain that confidence? • What common habits can you think of that cause us to feel distant from God's mercy and perhaps feel that it is “not for us?” • How can today's readings better prepare us to endure sickness? • When James and John answered Jesus with “We can,” do you think they had any idea what they were affirming? What does their desire to follow Jesus, even after his warning, say about their character? • How can we exercise servant leadership in our own lives?

Fin de semana del Domino Mundial de las Misiones El Papa Francisco en su mensaje del Domingo Mundial de las Misiones para 2018 dice: "Junto con los jóvenes, llevemos el Evangelio a todos", Trayendo a la mente las alegres actividades de los jóvenes al ser testigos del mensaje del Evangelio al servir a los pobres y ancianos en las parroquias. Por lo tanto, este fin de semana, celebramos el Domingo Mundial de las Misiones con el tema "Testificando la fe a través de los corazones de la juventud" destacando la pasión de los jóvenes en la Sociedad San Vicente de Paúl en la parroquia de Jesucristo Resucitado, Venezuela. Esta diócesis es un ejemplo de una que recibe apoyo de la colecta del Domingo Mundial de las Misiones. Por favor sea tan generoso como pueda y ayude a apoyar a más de 1,150 diócesis misioneras en todo el mundo. Invitamos a los feligreses a que añadan los nombres de aquellos seres queridos que han fallecido en nuestro libro conmemorativo anual. EL MAESTRO SE ADELANTA En el tiempo en que se escribieron los Evangelios, Santiago y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo (hijos del “trueno”) eran distinguidos dirigentes de la comunidad cristiana. Un método común de los evangelistas era poner las fallas de los primeros cristianos en los hombros de sus dirigentes. Esto lo hacían con el fin de ilustrar un aspecto de lo que significa ser discípulo y, quizás, confortarlos con el hecho de que Jesús escogió a seres humanos comunes, con defectos, para predicar la Buena Nueva. Parece doblemente extraño que estos dos discípulos, dintinguidos y apreciados, hayan sido reprendidos por Jesús cuando pidieron posiciones de honor. Jesús, tal como ocurrió, se les adelantó y, en el Evangelio, también se adelantó a los otros que se indignan con Santiago y Juan. Las lecturas de hoy de Isaías y Hebreos, junto con la de Jesús como se le describe en Marcos, se les adelantan y callan a los que reclaman puestos de honor al recordarnos que en la humildad del servicio conocemos el Reino de Dios entre nosotros. CRISTO SERVIDOR, IGLESIA SERVIDORA En el Evangelio de San Mateo, es la madre de Santiago y Juan la que hace la petición a Jesús (Lucas omite esta escena). Es “muy normal” que las madres quieran que sus hijos “salgan adelante en el mundo” y también que nosotros mismos busquemos posiciones de honor y poder. Pero nuevamente es la lección de Jesús, junto con las lecciones de Isaías y Hebreos, que nos recuerdan que necesitamos evaluar constantemente nuestra “muy normal” forma de vida para cerciorarnos de que estamos viviendo como Cristo, cabeza de la Iglesia. Cuando Isaías escribe sobre el Servidor doliente, se puede interpretar como una profecía sobre Jesús, pero también es una profecía de la presencia continua de Jesús, la Iglesia; cuando el autor de Hebreos escribe sobre la debilidad que Cristo el gran Sumo Sacerdote sufre, también es sobre la debilidad del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia. De esta manera las escrituras nos muestran hoy a todos, a los bautizados, a la Iglesia, cómo debemos continuar siendo el Cristo Servidor para el mundo.
