ADULTS NEEDED FOR CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY TEAMS We currently are looking for additional adult leaders for most of our ministry teams. Children’s Ministry meets Sunday mornings during the 10:30am Mass. These leaders are responsible for small groups of children or can choose to lead games, music, or craft activities that supplement our teaching lessons. Middle School and High School Ministry meet on Wednesday evenings. These leaders may present material to the large group, facilitate small group discussion, pray with students, etc. In all cases, prep time is minimal and all training and materials are provided. Past team members report they grow in their own faith as a result of serving in these ministries. Be a part of a fun team and join us now. Call Cindy to get started, 952-540-4762, [email protected].

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time (Aug. 26, 2018) Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Eph 5:21-32; Jn 6:60-69 The Gospel begins with many disciples saying “This saying is hard.” The saying they are referring to is “eat my flesh and drink my blood or you will have no life within you.” This was very disturbing to hear, even for those sincerely trying to follow Jesus. He lost many disciples that day. But he did not back down or soften his message. He let them go rather than do that. He wanted his disciples to make the conscious choice to follow him wholeheartedly. Joshua, in the first reading, also calls for the people to make a choice. Joshua knows he is about to die and perhaps is afraid that the people will turn away from the Lord after he is gone. So he sets before them a clear choice – to serve the Lord or not. He was undoubtedly much relieved when the people all agreed, “We will serve the Lord.” In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he too is asking for people to make a conscious choice to place themselves at the service of others. Although his examples are of marriage relationships, he intends his message to apply more generally as he says “Brothers and sisters: Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.” We submit to one another, not because we are forced to, but because we choose to serve the Lord. • What does “serving the Lord” mean in your life? • Do you have sympathy for the disciples who were unable to accept the saying “eat my flesh and drink my blood?” Why or why not? • The people in Joshua's day recognized the many blessings the Lord had bestowed upon the people of Israel to help them decide to serve the Lord. Which blessings do you recognize in your life today that make you want to serve the Lord? • After reading Eph 5:21-32, how do you interpret the apparent asymmetry of Paul's comments about the duties of husbands and wives?
