DUTCHESS ST. PATRICK’S PARADE The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade will be on Saturday March 2nd. Prior Mass will be at 9:00 am at St. Mary’s Church. Our celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Buckley, himself of Irish descent, is currently pastor of St. Christopher’s Church in Red Hook. He spent his summers here at St. Mary’s when he was a seminarian. Daniel PARENT TALK Limiting TV Time I was becoming concerned that my children were spending too much time in front of screen. Most of their conversations resolved around movies and television shows. They wouldn’t miss their favorite programs but they were missing hours of their lives. My concerns were confirmed one night when we lost power for a few hours during a long thunderstorm. No television, no computers, no iPads. The girls grew bored, cranky, and restless. Finally I lit candles and pulled out board games. We played Dominoes, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit. The power came back, but Kara and Dad were tied and wanted to play to finish. After that night, I realized we needed to make a change. In order to earn screen time, the children had to spend time reading, playing outside or doing chores. Since then, they have found ways to have fun and don’t need their devices nearly as much. ST. If you have been asked to be a godparent, use the Precepts of the Church as a “self-assessment” of your suitability for the spiritual role before accepting. If you have not been following them, take the call to be a godparent as God’s call to conversion. But, again, complying with the Precepts is only the bare minimum we need to do to be considered “practicing Catholics.” The precepts are: 1. To attend Mass every Sunday and on Holy Days of obligation, and rest from unnecessary servile labor. 2. To sincerely confess your sins and receive absolution at least once a year. 3. To worthily receive Holy Communion in the state of sanctifying grace at least once a year during the Easter season. 4. To observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. 5. To support your parish in its material needs, each according to ability. 6. To obey the marriage laws of the Church.
