Please be advised that end-of-year donations, intended for the 2018 tax season, need to be either received at the parish by December 31 or postmarked via USPS before December 31. This holds true for donations received at Masses during the final week of the year. If you need a convenient way to make regular offerings or if you plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to look into our electronic giving options. CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S BREAK FOR PRE-SCHOOL, CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRY, AND HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY We will not be meeting from Sunday December 23Wednesday January 2. We will resume our Sunday sessions on January 6 and our Wednesday sessions on January 9. May your family enjoy the peace and joy of the Christmas season! HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH SERVICE AND SOCIAL SATURDAY: ARC VALUE VILLAGE AND ZERO HOUR ESCAPE ROOMS Parish youth in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in the January 26 Service and Social Saturday event. Meet in the cafeteria of the St. John school building at 12:30pm to carpool to Arc Value Village Thrift shop. We will help this organization sort donations, straighten merchandise on the floor, and other tasks. Following our service, we will grab a bite to eat and then head over to Zero Hour Escape Rooms to see if we can work together to solve puzzles fast enough to escape our room! We will return to St. Gabriel’s at 8:00pm. Cost for the event is $30 for dinner and the escape room admission. All participants need to have a permission slip (available at the back of the church or on the parish website). Please sign up to attend by January 16. MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH SERVICE AND SOCIAL SATURDAY: SNOW TUBING AND LOAVES AND FISHES All 5th – 8th grade parish youth are invited to our January 19 Service and Social Saturday event. We will meet at 12:30pm in the Social Hall at the St. Joseph campus and then go to Elm Creek Park for snow tubing! Afterwards, we will return to the St. Joseph campus to help prepare, serve, and clean-up for the Loaves and Fishes meal. Permission slips are available online and at the entrance of the church. Please sign up to attend by January 14. Cost is $16.00 and everyone must have a signed permission slip to attend. Adult help is needed to chaperone, too— please contact Cindy for more information ([email protected]; 952-540-4762).

NO NURSERY DECEMBER 30 The nursery will be closed on December 30. We will open again on January 6 for the 10:30am Mass. Join us for the weekly West Metro Young Adults Sport’s Night. These events are Friday nights at St. Gabriel’s , 6 Interlachen Road in Hopkins. All young adults ages 18-39 are invited to join us at 6:30p.m. Basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, great fun - come inside and play!

A Listening Presence Everyone at times has difficulties and needs a caring companion who will listen, empathize and be a reminder of a caring faith community. BeFriender ministry is not a ministry of “doing” but of “being.” BeFrienders provide care through a listening presence to anyone experiencing grief, loss, transition or other cares. Nocturnal Adoration Society Not able to commit to a regular hour each week of Eucharistic Adoration? Is Eucharistic Adoration a new form of prayer for you? Members of the Nocturnal Adoration Society are called to spend one hour, once a month, during the hours of the night in prayer before the Eucharist. The St. Gabriel Nocturnal Society meets every FIRST FRIDAY of the month in the chapel at St. Joseph campus, from 8:00 to 11:00pm. The next evening of Nocturnal Adoration is Friday, January 4. We invite all parishioners to come to the chapel at 8:00, 9:00, or 10:00pm and “spend one hour with Him.” Our monthly hour before the Blessed Sacrament is a mixture of read prayer and responses from the “Office of the Blessed Sacrament,” the official prayer book of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, and silent individual prayer. Join us once a month for an hour to explore how Eucharistic Adoration can deepen your experience of communion with Christ Eucharistic!

Fellowship Funeral Luncheons: You are invited to share in this Fellowship Ministry! "The Funeral Luncheon Ministry reaches out with care and hospitality to those grieving the loss of a loved one, to let them know they do not walk alone. You can share in this ministry in at least a few ways: ♦ Add your name to our list of people willing to bring desserts for funeral luncheons. We usually ask for two dozen cookies, bars or brownies, baked at home or purchased. The more people we have on this list, the more we can share in this fellowship! ♦ Add your name to the list of people willing to help set up, serve and clean up after funeral lunches. ♦ Consider helping with the coordination of funeral lunches. Coordinators make the initial contact with a family to confirm the menu and the number of people. Then they contact the caterer to place the order, and luncheon ministers to help serve. HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS … The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always “get it right,” but they always tried to. These three “amateurs” were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. December 30, 2018; Feast of the Holy Family; Year C 1 Samuel 1:20-22, 24-28;1 John 3:1-2, 21-24 and Luke 2:41-52 Jesus is now 12 years old. At this age, a Jewish boy becomes a man in the Jewish faith. He is expected to take his place in the Temple with the other men. Sometimes it’s hard for parents to remember and accept when their children come of age. Mary and Joseph certainly knew that Jesus was of age because they took him to the Temple which was a long walk. What Mary and Joseph may have missed was how seriously Jesus understood what had happened. He took his place in the Temple and that is where they found him. Today, the coming of age in the church is Confirmation. The third and final sacrament of initiations which go along with Baptism and Eucharist. From time to time we will see a newly confirmed person begin to take on adult responsibilities but it is not too often. We need to encourage these young adults to get involved. Let them know they are an important part of the church. • Often times, our young adults drop out of the church once they are confirmed. It’s treated like graduation not initiations. What can we do to get them in involved? • As Mary and Joseph searched for Jesus, how long do you think it took them before they thought to “check” the temple? • When you were confirmed, did you consider it a “coming of age”? • What can we do to have the newly confirmed treat confirmation as important as receiving their driver’s license (the true coming of age)?

Las familias son el primer crisol en el que se prueba y se fortalece el amor. Jesús mismo fue una de tres personas que vivía a la sombra del otro. Esta familia, como la nuestra, no siempre “lo hacía todo bien”, pero siempre trataba. Estos tres amateurs celebraban un día de fiesta, y uno de ellos se perdió. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El primer domingo después de la Navidad celebramos la fiesta de la Sagrada Familia. Los latinos somos un pueblo muy unido en familia. Para nosotros es más que un pequeño grupo compuesto de padre, madre, hijos e hijas. La familia para nosotros los latinos es un conjunto grande de abuelos, abuelas, tíos, tías, primos, primas, compadres, comadres, suegros, suegras y otros más además del padre, la madre y los hijos. Para los latinos una fiesta que celebra la familia de Jesús es la cosa más natural del mundo. Extrañamente esta fiesta no es muy antigua. En realidad es una celebración que data de comienzos de la época moderna en el siglo XVII. Antes de estas fechas la familia de Jesús casi siempre era entendida como compuesta por Jesús, María y Ana (la madre de María). Se daba por hecho que José estaba por allí. Pero en el siglo XVII muchos perdieron sus padres pues tenían que ir a las fábricas a trabajar. Por eso el magisterio instituyó la conmemoración de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José para recordar a los padres cristianos su deber ante sus hijos y su esposa. — Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
