REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD In Jesus’ day, demonic possession was not uncommon. Mark presents Jesus as one who takes on the evil spirits, overturning their possession of this man. Jesus has declared war against the kingdom of Satan. Its hour of ascendancy is coming to an end. The unclean spirit recognizes Jesus as one with greater power, for it asks, “Have you come to destroy us?” Then it confesses Jesus as the “Holy One of God” (Mark 1:24). Jesus will battle the forces of evil to the death, his death. But what looks like defeat for Jesus will be changed to victory, because the power of God is at work in him. In the first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses is speaking to the people before they enter the Promised Land. The entire book is his farewell speech to them. He will not go with them. He consoles them, saying that God promises to raise up a prophet like Moses and will speak through him: “I . . . will put my words into his mouth” (Deuteronomy 18:18). Jesus is presented to us today as the prophet like Moses, who teaches with the authority of God and whose words are obeyed even by unclean spirits. LENTEN GUIDELINE 2018 The 2018 Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018 and ends with the beginning of the Easter Triddum and the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 29. Lent offers us the opportunity to prepare for the celebration of Easter, to walk with the catechumens preparing for the celebration of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation and for those of us who are baptized to prepare ourselves to renew our baptismal promises through penitential practices. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete every-day actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit." THE FOLLOWING PRACTICES ARE TO BE OBSERVED BY CATHOLICS IN THE DIOCESE OF ORANGE IN THEIR PENITENTIAL PRACTICES 1) It is to be noted first of all that it is by Divine Law that the faithful are bound to do penance and, as a specification of this obligation by the Church, some form of mortification by those 14 years of age and older is to be observed on all Fridays throughout the year. This obligation is in itself a serious one. 2) Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. No Catholic will lightly hold himself excused from this penitential practice. If for some serious reason a person must eat meat on a Friday in Lent, some other form of self-sacrifice should be performed. 3) Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and not yet 60 is bound also to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. a. On these two days of fast only one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals on these days is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. b. Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

LENTEN OBSERVANCE 4) In order that our love for Christ and identification with Him may be deepened, all Catholics during the period of Lent are encouraged to participate at daily Mass and to receive Holy Communion often; to participate in the devotional life of the Church; to give generously to religious and charitable works; to assist the sick, the aged and the poor; to practice voluntary fast, penance and self-denial, especially regarding alcoholic drink and social entertainment; and to pray more fervently, particularly for the intentions of the Holy Father. 5) Lent is an admirable time to preach the Gospel message of reconciliation and for Pastors to make available frequent communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In this way the social and ecclesial aspects of sin and reconciliation may be underscored. It should be noted, however, that at such communal celebrations, general absolution may not be given. 6) Ash Wednesday falls this year on February 14. Easter Sunday is on April 1st and the Easter Season concludes on the Feast of Pentecost, May 20th. Catholics are bound to receive Holy Communion at least once a year, especially within the Easter Season, unless for good reason the precept is fulfilled at some other time. 7) Marriages may take place during Mass and the Nuptial Blessing may be given, but it is contrary to the penitential spirit of the Season of Lent to have elaborate weddings and celebrations. 8) To afford the faithful opportunities for gaining the graces of the Lenten Season, there should be special Lenten Masses, particularly in the late afternoon or evening. The Way of the Cross and other prayer services should also be publicly celebrated during the Lenten Season. Continues on next page...

LENTEN GUIDELINE 2018 - LENTEN OBSERVANCE, Continues 9) There is to be no morning Mass celebrated on Holy Thursday. Morning Prayer is recommended. 10) Good Friday has become a day specially consecrated to prayer and meditation on the passion and death of Christ. Where the devotion of Three Hours is observed, however, it should not conflict with the primary importance of the liturgy of Good Friday. Morning Prayer is recommended. 11) In compliance with (1) the liturgical norms of the Roman Missal on "Easter Vigil" #3, (2) the Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Easter Feasts #78 and (3) published Diocesan regulations, the Easter Vigil Service must begin after nightfall (not before 7:50 PM). Morning Prayer is recommended. 12) Those responsible for the religious formation of the young should bring their children, whenever it is possible, to Church in Lent for the devotion of the Way of the Cross. It is commendable to have a separate devotion to the Way of the Cross accommodated to children, insofar as circumstances permit. 13) The Sacred Triduum begins with the Celebration of the Eucharist of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday evening and ends with Easter Evening Prayer.

FLU SEASON GUIDELINES AND THE LITURGY With the arrival of cold and flu season, concerns naturally are raised about health and well-being. Common sense and basic hygiene is the best way to limit the spread of flu and colds. The following guidelines will also be helpful. In Christian charity, stay home when sick. It is not a sin to miss Mass because you are sick or taking care of someone who is sick. Stay home and return to Church when you are well. During the Sign of Peace, if a person is feeling ill, has flu-like symptoms, or simply does not want to shake hands, he or she can make a simpler gesture such as a smile or a bow of the head with the words "The peace of the Lord be with you" to show the mutual charity celebrated in this part of the liturgy. It is an individual’s decision whether or not to receive the Body and Blood of Christ under both species. Christ is truly and completely present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine. While the fullness of the sacramental sign of Eucharistic communion is exemplified when both the sacramental signs of bread and wine are received, you are not obligated to receive from the cup. If someone is gluten intolerant, receiving from the Cup allows them to receive Holy Communion.

TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we’ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today’s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don’t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We’re reading St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul’s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul’s heart; he wrote to them sometimes “with many tears” (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There’s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. Louise, a woman of great courage left the security of her home to answer God’s will, and call to help suffering mothers and babies in Africa. Her testimony is the story of her gradual surrender to God’s will, and how our Lord equipped and provided for all her needs along the way. LINEAMIENTOS PARA LA LITURGIA Y LA TEMPORADA DE GRIPE Durante esta temporada de resfriados y gripe, naturalmente han aumentado las preocupaciones de salubridad y bienestar. El sentido común y la higiene básica es la mejor manera de limitar la propagación de la gripe y los resfriados. Los siguientes lineamientos también serán útiles. Es una caridad cristiana el quedarse en casa cuando uno esté enfermo. No es pecado el no ir a misa porque está enfermo o porque está cuidando de alguien enfermo. Quédese en casa y vuelva a la Iglesia cuando ya se halla recuperado. Durante la señal de la paz, si una persona se siente enfermo/a (tiene síntomas similares a la gripe) o simplemente no quiere dar la mano, él o ella puede sonreír o inclinar la cabeza y al mismo tiempo decir "La paz" y así demostrar la caridad mutua que se celebra durante esta parte de la liturgia. La decisión de recibir el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo bajo las dos especies, es individual. Código de Derecho Canónico 874 # 3, nos dice que los requisitos para los Padrinos son: Sea Católico, este Confirmado, haya recibido ya el Santísimo Sacramento de la Eucaristía y lleve, al mismo tiempo, una vida congruente con la fe y con la misión que va asumir.
