It was received on Friday, 17 November 2017. We wish Dr. Van Wye well. Please keep him in your prayers, and may God bless him and his family. November 17, 2017 Dear Father Patrick, Staff, School, and Community of Holy Family Cathedral Parish, After over 13 years at Holy Family Cathedral I have determined that now is the time for me to resign my position as Director of Music and Organist for reasons of health, family, and personal issues. It has been a blessing to have been given the opportunity to develop a thriving music ministry, and engage this Catholic community. I would like to thank Fr. Patrick, Msgr. Doug, and Msgr. Don for the opportunity to be of service to you. I thank the staff at the Parish and School for their dedication but most importantly I thank each of you for your friendship and your dedication to a life in Christ. You will always be in my prayers. Sincerely, Steven Van Wye

BACKGROUND SCREENING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROCEDURES IMPORTANT INFORMATION Policy: All diocesan employees and volunteers, school and parish, age 18 and above, working in any capacity with minors, children under 18, and vulnerable adults must obtain criminal background screening, safe environment training and sign the diocese Policy Against Sexual Misconduct Code of Conduct. Per Diocesan directive all Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick and Homebound, Sacristans, Assistant Sacristans, Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Directors/Coordinators of Religious Education, Principals, Teachers, and all school personel, Youth ministers, parish staff, Altar Server trainers, Music directors, and anyone coming in contact with minors, must be fingerprinted and safe environment trained. If you have been background screened through the Diocese of Orange in the past, please provide me with your date of birth in order to do a search and have your name added to our database. If all you need is to renew your online training, as it expires every 3 years, please visit https://orange.cmgconnect.org and complete the training. Upon completion of the online training, you will print or email the certificate of completion to me. We are grateful for all our volunteers, please understand we are following Diocesan directives for the protection of all. If you have any questions, or need more information, please call or email Chris Hanna at 714-639-2900 Ext. 116 or via email at [email protected]

Thank you for all you do for HFC, please understand that you will be unable to volunteer until this process is completed.

REMEMBERING OUR SICK AND HOMEBOUND AT CHRISTMAS

CHRISTMAS FOR OUR HOMEBOUND/CONVALESCENT HOMES

As we approach this First Sunday of Advent, the serenity of the season it is our hope you enter prayerfully into the Advent season. The weeks leading up to Christmas can be stressful and overwhelming. We lose sight of the real reason for all our preparations. In the past, your wonderful participation has brought much delight to our homebound and convalescent, just knowing that someone took time to remember them. Often yours is the only card or gift they receive. Remember: if you couldn’t get out to do your own shopping, what gift would you like to receive? On the tables near the Cathedral doors you will see decorated baskets with name cards to be selected for the homebound or convalescent home residents. You may adopt one of them to be remembered in prayer during Advent and with a card/gift for Christmas. Thank you for sharing in this loving outreach. God bless you! Lorna Golden 714-639-2900 x239

MAILING MINISTRY The mailing ministry at Holy Family Cathedral is in need of more volunteers. Our volunteers help us with several mailings during the year such as the Easter mailing, the Fiesta mailing, the PSA mailing and the Christmas schedule mailing. We usually start following the 8:15am Mass and meet in Room 1. You will meet new friends as you help us with our mailings. If you are interested in becoming a member of the “mailing ministry” please contact Mary Lou Bell at 714-639-2900 Ext. 112 or via email at [email protected]. Thank you for considering becoming a member of this amazing group.

Our next mailing will be on Thursday, December 7, 2017. Stop by and give us a hand with the Christmas Schedule mailing!

YOUNG IN SPIRIT ENCOURAGES YOU TO JOIN THEM The invitation is still out there for you to join the Young in Spirit group. You will be helping us with our projects for our own parishioners and people in foreign lands. Help us brighten someone’s day! School parents are most welcome! We meet every Tuesday at 9:00am in the Parish Center to socialize, share snacks and enjoy each other’s company. We really need your help to continue our goal to supply rosaries to those locally and throughout the world. You will be amazed at how easy it is and you will easily make your first rosary the first day. Please contact or Pat Erdkamp at 714-832-6759 for more information.

GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt call for our own repentance. We remember God’s faithful love for us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For “behold, you are angry, and we are sinful” (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God’s promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God’s might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to “rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you” (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God’s hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory. But God has a different plan: the Incarnation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS AND READINGS FOR THE WEEK First Reading — We are the clay and you, O LORD, are the potter: we are the work of your hands (Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Advent calendars appear now in many homes, and newfangled formats are even available on line. Children have fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the days counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days something totally unconnected to religious life, like a small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of Gengenbach in Germany’s Black Forest. Every year the townspeople invite an illustrator of children’s books to create twentyfour paintings or motifs for each of the twenty-four main windows of the building. Every night the people gather to see a new window opened and illuminated. Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in tone on December 17 from Advent longing and preparation toward imminent hope in Christ’s coming. That kind of creativity is left up to you! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
